This head-wear was Introduced by Lieutenant colonel William Malone whilst in command of a New Zealand Territorial unit (Taranaki Rifles) just prior to World War 1. The hat's crown was said to mirror the outline of Mount Taranaki. The hat was formerly adopted by the New Zealand army in France in early 1916 and is commonly referred to as the 'Lemon Squeezer'. It is still in use for ceremonial purposes. Note: Lieutenant colonel Malone was killed in action on Gallipoli in 1915 during the battle of Chunuk Bair. Inspector's Cap - MMTB - green cloth exterior, brown cotton interior lining with black leather pad on the inside, black leather internal hat band, black cotton hat band on exterior with a black cord at the front half of the cap terminating in two small MMTB gold metal buttons on either side, black plastic external peak and green on the inside of the cap. Hat band has two gold bands or braids around the outside of the cap. Has a manufacturers lable inside the cap - made by Mountcastle Pty Ltd of Melbourne St South Brisbane. The banner and frame were carried by representatives of the 38th Battalion during parades..1) Rectangular red cloth banner with gold coloured fringing sewn to the bottom edge.
