Miss Bell (1900 – 1984) The ‘Miss Bell Playground’ was named after Miss Rebecca Adelaide Bell, a retired teacher who regularly helped out at Mt Dandenong Primary school for 8 years. Born in NSW, Miss Bell had taught in several states and had fond memories of holidays spent at ‘Mountjoy’ in the Dandenong Ranges. When she retired Miss Bell built a home in Jeeves Avenue where she lived out the rest of her life with her Siamese cats. Miss Bell helped the children with reading, grammar spelling and history. She really cared about the children and her school visits brought her a lot of happiness. John Lundy-Clarke grew up in the Kalorama/Mt Dandenong area and later in life (1972-74) began to write a comprehensive history of the area working from an original settlement map in an effort to cover all areas. Barbers Bridge was named after George Barber, an early settler.Black and white photograph showing a man standing on a bridge over the Olinda Creek. 1910Handwritten n reverse: Barbers Bridge on Olinda Creek 1910. This was a ford crossed by the road after Isaac Jeeves selected allotment “C” “Jeeves Saddle” in 1871 and stopped travel through his property. The bridge has been built several times but at time of writing (1974) is replaced by a culvert consisting of two pipes two feet six inches wide. Kathleen Gartside with a cabbage grown by her father Jack Gartside on their property located on Centre Dandenong Road, Dingley. The Gartside family home was located opposite the Kingswood Golf Club in Dingley. The cabbage has a circumference of 12 feet, whilst the cabbage heart has a circumference of four feet. The Gartside family were a prominent local Dingley family, owning large market gardens and operating Gartside Bros Pty Ltd, a straight vegetable cannery employing large numbers of people. They were also keen golfers and around 1937, they leased 126 acres of their land to the Kingswood Golf Club. Jack Gartside moved his family home to the other side of Centre Dandenong Road, so that the Kingswood Clubhouse could be built. The first official games were played at Kingswood in March 1937. Row 3: 1st Left, "Holidaying at Cockatoo". in 1852 Stephen Charman, who had arrived in Melbourne 1842 aged 21 years as one of Henry Dendy's emigrants, purchased 160 acres in Spring Grove ( now Cheltenham). Stephen and his family lived in a wattle and daub hut and worked hard to establish a market garden, poultry and pig farm. The first Methodist Church Services were held at their home. Former Collingwood Football Club player Danny Hibbert of Montmorency laces up with the help of his father Ron. Hibbert was at Collingwood for three seasons. During the 1969 season, he scored five goals in a win over Geelong. Later, in the 1970s, he played with Dandenong and won the J.J. Woman looking down slope towards the actual site of the Kyeema aircraft crash which occurred on October 25th, 1938. The Douglas DC-2 Kyeema, operated by Australian National Airways, was en-route from Adelaide to Melbourne when it overshot Essendon Airport by 20 miles.
