REIDY.The 2/24th Battalion was an infantry battalion of the Australian Army, which served during World War II .A unit of all-volunteers, it was formed in July 1940 from primarily Victorian volunteers and was known as "Wangaratta's Own" because of the time the battalion spent in the town during its formative period prior to deployment overseas. It served in North Africa in 1941–1942 as part of the 26th Brigade, which was assigned to the 7th Division, before being reassigned to the 9th Division. In early 1943, the battalion returned to Australia and later took part in campaigns against the Japanese in New Guinea in 1943–1944 and Borneo in 1945, before being disbanded in 1946. The 2/24th suffered the highest number of casualties of any 2nd AIF infantry battalion. The Unit was granted the Freedom of the City by the Rural City of Wangaratta in 1990 and one of the first, if not the first, to receive this type of honourReproduced black and white photograph of large group of soldiers having a meal. Artwork, other - Public Artwork, Boer War Memorial by James White, 1906
The Boer War Memorial was created by sculptor James White in honour of Australian Soldiers who fought in the South African War (1899-1902). White used the electrolytic copper deposit method to produce this large statue, which is sometimes mistaken for a cast bronze work. The Foundation stone was laid on 18 May 1901 by H.R.H The Duke of York (George V). The sculpture was unveiled on the 1st November 1906 by His Excellency Baron Northcote G.C.I.E., C.B. Governor General of Australia and then Mayor of Ballarat, J. J. Brokenshire. Bravery and mateship are beautifully captured in depiction of a scene taken straight from the battlegrounds. Today the memorial is a much-photographed tribute and exploration of the friendships and struggles of men at war. A proud cavalry horse bears the weight of two men in the chaos of the battlefield. The Boer War in Africa was an early example of the Australian Colonies sacrificing men and equipment for Britain to defend it’s Empire against colonial insurgence. The memorial is of historical and aesthetic significance to the people of Ballarat.Horse and figures, bronze mounted on bluestone base and granite plinth, plaques list the war dead. The artwork depicts two soldiers and a horse. A British soldier is being succoured by an Australian mounted rifleman. In honour of Australian Soldiers who fought in South Africa 1899-1902. Foundation stone laid 18th May 1901 by H.R.H The Duke of York (George V). Unveiled 1st November 1906 by His Excellency Baron Northcote G.C.I.E., C.B. Governor General of Australia. J. H. Book, Miller, J. R., D.D, The blessing of cheerfulness, n.d
... . – From the Preface by James Russell Miller Miller, J. R., D.D ...“We are set in this world to be happy. We should not falter in our great task of happiness, nor move ever among our fellows with shadows on our face when we ought to have sunlight. “We have a mission to others — to add to their cheer. This we cannot do unless we have first learned the lesson of cheerfulness ourselves. We cannot teach what we do not know. We cannot give what we do not have. “In this little book a lesson is set for you, my reader. It may seem a hard lesson to learn; nevertheless, it is one you want to learn, and one you can learn, if you will surrender your life wholly to the great Teacher. – From the Preface by James Russell MillerPale green cover with gold embossed text and floral borders. Object, Kyeema Wreckage Fragment, Pre 1938
The Kyeema airline crash took place on 25 October 1938 when the Australian National Airways Douglas DC-2 Kyeema, tail number VH-UYC, flying from Adelaide to Melbourne, commenced final approach to Essendon Airport through heavy fog and crashed into the western slopes of Mount Dandenong, killing all 18 on board instantly. There is strong evidence that the pilots were becoming unsure of their position. According to Macarthur Job's book, Disaster in the Dandenongs, the radio operator had requested the controller at Essendon give them a radio bearing. Essendon had acknowledged and told them to leave their transmitter on, but the signal stopped and no further contact was made. It is thought that this is the moment that Kyeema hit the mountain. There were 18 people on board the DC-2: 14 passengers, the captain, the first officer, an air hostess, and a cadet pilot who operated the radio during the flight. The victims were :— THE CREW. Photograph, Shop of J H Pollard, House Decorator, at 139 Union Road, Surrey Hills, 1930
This site was later occupied by Mitton's pharmacy. James Henry Pollard appears on the 1903 electoral roll as a painter in Canterbury Road (in one of the buildings that made up Hansen's Terrace.)The Union Road shops are covered by a City of Boroondara Heritage Overlay. This particular shop has changed very little with some alteration to the upper storey when it was repurposed for residential dwelling.Black and white photo of James Henry Pollard's shop at 139 Union Road, Surrey Hills in 1930. It is a 2 storey brick building with 2 glass display windows either side of the door and a corrugated iron roofed verandah supported on 3 posts. Above is a dwelling with 2 sash windows and an interior balcony within an arch. A wooden paling fence adjoins on the left. The side of the building and the front pediment carry advertising for the business. From this it appears that James Henry Pollard was an insurance agent for Guardian Assurance Company as well as being a house painter and decorator. There is a deciduous tree in the front of the shop.businesses, shops, mitton's pharmacy, guardian assurance company, union road shops, james henry pollard, painter, decorator
