Junior Legatees Judy Bishop (on the left) and Jeanine Shinners (nee Hunt) dressed for an Annual Demonstration performance. They were taught by Miss E. Domec-Carre and went on to become soloists and then assistants at Girls' Classes. Jeanine later became an active Legatee with SE Group. This photo provides just one example of the beautiful costumes worn by Junior Legacy girls for Legacy's Annual Demonstrations at the Melbourne Town Hall. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and eurythmics, the Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to the late 1970's, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall or Olympic Pool Stadium. The beautiful costumes were made by members of the Junior Legacy Mothers' Club and the Melbourne Legacy Wives' Association. A Legacy ceremony at the Shrine of Remembrance on 22 April 1988. One of the annual "Anzac Commemoration Ceremony for Students" events, held just prior to ANZAC Day. The ceremony provides a valuable opportunity for students to gain an appreciation of the Anzac spirit, the significance of the Shrine and the meaning of Anzac Day. Photo of Senator Barney Cooney presenting a cheque to Legacy in front of a gathering of Legacy disabled dependents. Also some of the mothers gathered to watch. Senator Cooney represented the Department of Veterans Affairs when he presented two wheelchairs and a cheque for $7,000 to President George Woodward at Legacy House. The article in the Answer newsletter mentions: 'The grant of $7,000 will greatly assist Legacy's programs by covering the cost of bus hire needed for the regular outings organised during the year and the wheelchairs will provide additional assistance allowing more Junior Legatees to participate in activities.' After the presentation the junior Legatees went to the cinema and 10 pin bowling. Every month Legacy's handicapped dependents were invited to go on outing for take part in recreational and educational activities. These programmes aimed to develop independence and thus lessen the need for reliance on others for simple routine functions. Once a year there is a two week camp this also gave the mothers some respite. A book of photos that records the activities of the disabled dependents group during 2014. It is mostly photos without captions but the enjoyment of the participants is clear. The introduction says: In January 2014, 45 dependents enjoyed 8 days together at Somers Camp , with a team of generous volunteers. In July 2014 a group of 21 visited far North Queensland . . . We are grateful for the high quality input to these events by our staff and volunteers. The dedication and personal commitment of these energetic young people gives the events great vitality to the clear benefit of our Junior Legatees. Melbourne Legacy's support of our Dependents with Disability is a most important part of the work of Legacy. Our widows are reassured in the knowledge that their children will have support throughout their lives from a caring organisation." Most junior legatees are helped until they reach 18 years of age. A copy of note that was given to donors to thank them for their donations it was sent with their receipt. Was part of a folio of proforma stationery from the 1960s. The flyer gives some information about Legacy House. It mentions the facilities available for the benefit of widows and children. Including two large well equipped gymnasia which are attended by more than 700 junior legatees each week. A dental clinic were Junior Legatees under 17 years of age are able to receive free dental examinations and treatment. Free medical examinations are carried out here too. Meeting rooms for Junior Legacy Mothers' Club and Senior Widows Club (those over 50 years of age). When printed the Senior Widows Club numbered more than 5,200. It mentions room for fetes run by a number of auxiliaries to raise funds. Also a sewing room fitted with 5 electric sewing machines to make costumes for the Annual Demonstration. A well equipped library for use of the Junior Legatees. A ladies lounge and television room where widows may rest when visiting the city. Rooms for speech training and mathematics coaching classes. A maintenance workshop where all sporting and general equipment used by widows and children can be repaired and/or constructed. Sundry committee meeting rooms where members of Legacy meet to consider and find solutions for the many problems which arise in respect of the families they care for. A notice from Aaron Beattie the Chairman of the Gymnastic Committee about the details of Junior Legatee activities in 1928. It mentions the location, time, cost, enrolment, and activities of the Gymnastics group for boys run by Junior Legacy Gymnastic Sub-Committee in 1928. It mentions that it was not possible to hold a gymnastics display in 1927 because of lack of a suitable hall. Former Junior Legatee Brian Edwards set out in September 1993 to complete a flight around Australia in a tiger moth called 'Matilda' as a tribute to Legacy's 70th Anniversary. He was due to arrive at Essendon Airport on 4th October 1993 and a celebratory luncheon was held. The event was supported by Ansett Airlines and Optus Communications. A photo of a group of young legatees at a swimming pool in 1953. There are 8 boys, of various ages, in swim gear and 2 men who could be the instructor and a Legacy member. Legacy clubs ran classes for junior legatees for many years, such as gymnastics and swimming classes. It was part of providing for the children of their deceased comrades. The skills they learned were show cased in an annual demonstration usually at the Melbourne Town Hall. It appears to be photo taken professionally, as there are several photos of different classes (see 00862 - 00867), a note of thanks was included in the Newsletter to Mr John Beckett of 22 Kirkwood Ave Sandringham for taking the photos and donating them to Legacy. An example of a badge issued by Legacy for fundraising during the Legacy Appeal and Badge Week. The donation value is $100. It is possibly a modern issue. This style recreates high donation value badges from the 1960s. The badge of Legacy is the Torch and Wreath of Laurel. The Torch signifies the undying flame of service and sacrifice of those who gave their lives for their country. The Wreath of Laurel is the symbol of our remembrance of them. The pin was donated back to Legacy from the family of Marjorie and Jacobina (Jackie) Bristol, sisters who were both junior legatees in the 1930s and 1940s after their father passed away, he was a World War 1 veteran. Jacobina later became Jackie Wood and passed away in April 2020. Marjorie became Marjorie Bachmann and passed away in 1986. Also donated were a photo of the girls at calisthenics classes, a green tunic uniform, a junior legatee certificate, a souvenir handkerchief from the 90th anniversary celebrations and a $100 Legacy badge. A colour slide of children at a train station in 1958. In the 1950s for many years Legacy provided Junior Legatees holidays in the country instead of camps. This was a group of children that had gone to Traralgon by train. Was with many other slides taken in the 1950s and 1960s. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. Photograph of a building at Somers Camp. Melbourne Legacy provided camps for junior legatees - the children of deceased servicemen. It started in the early years of Legacy with outings to the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring. Permanent camp buildings were built in the 1930s and with an association with Lord Somers (Governor of Victoria) it was called Somers Camp. A Laurel Club brooch from Geelong Legacy. Laurel Club was a name given by some Legacy clubs to the widows' clubs . The brooch was owned by Margaret Burn who was a junior legatee in the 1930s after the death of her father in World War 1. Her husband served in World War 2 and when he died Margaret joined the Geelong Laurel Club.
