This is the 1979 Annual Report for Lyndoch Home and Hospital for the Aged, Warrnambool. It contains lists of Board Members, a President’s Report, a sketch of a proposed new building, financial reports, photographs and a list of Life Governors. Lyndoch Home for the Aged was established in 1952 and has developed with a wide range of facilities for the aged since that date. The original Lyndoch property near the mouth of the river Hopkins was owned by a Melbourne tea merchant, George Rolfe, who bought the land when there were only on the site a couple of cottages and a larger building which had been a school, Warrnambool Grammar, run by Henry Kemmis. Rolfe acquired the land in the 1870s and named the property Lyndoch after the town in the Barossa Valley where he had lived. He owned Lyndoch for 44 years and it was his stepdaughter, Florence Lake who built in the 1920s the bungalow known as Lyndoch which forms the original building of the Lyndoch Home for the Aged. Today the facility is called Lyndoch Living.This report is kept for the benefit of researchers wanting details of the history of Lyndoch over the past thirty or forty years.This is a booklet with a cardboard buff-coloured cover. This building is the second of the Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows rooms the first built in 1862 and opened in that year on the fifteenth anniversary of the foundation of the Lodge in Belfast/Port Fairy. In 1872 a 35foot addition was added to the back and in 1873 the grand porch was added. The hall was destroyed by fire in 1875 and the only item saved was the cedar Dispensation frame of the past Grand Masters made by John Gallin that now resides in the Historical Society Rooms. The Trustees bought another building which occupied the land now occupied by the National Australia Bank on the corner of Sackville and Cox Streets but it was not suitable so they decided to re-instate the building whose ruins in the meantime had been used by Cobb and Co. This new building was designed by Charles Neylon an architect and built by Robert Ireland. The completed building was re-opened in December 1888 with four front rooms, a mezzanine floor and a hall measuring 32' by 26' and capable of holding 200. This image is one of a series of photographs taken by Melbourne based photographers Stevenson and McNicoll who visited Bacchus Marsh and its nearby districts between September and November 1883. William Marshall opened his new premises in Main Street in June 1869. In the following November he opened a wheelwright shop adjacent to his smithy. Mr T. Carlton was the wheelwright. The Marshall Blacksmith building was located next to the ANA Hall in Main Street. It was demolished in 1910 to make way for a new building known as the Chambers Building. In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the blacksmith played an essential role in the functioning of the whole community. Before the industrialisation of manufacturing, all metal objects, including farm implements, building requirements and domestic utensils were made by hand. As mechanisation of industry increased, the smith commonly performed the role of farrier in the times when horse power was pivotal to all aspects of society. Complementing this work, the forge was often allied with a wheelwright's shop. These premises also acted as a meeting place for the men of the town, where news was shared and friendships forged. The third man is wearing more formal clothing. Two of the men hold the reins of two horses. A picket fence runs along the front of a spare block at the side of the building. Kangaroo Ground pioneers James Johnston (died 1895) with his wife Elizabeth commenced building this stone house on his Pretty Hill property, Kangaroo Ground in 1842. It was one of the oldest homes in the district till 1938 when new owner Mr Percy Cope, a master builder demolished the old building and a new brick building was erected in its place. Pretty Hill is one of the highest spots in the district with splendid views of the surrounding country.This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). "GYMNASIUM OF NOVEL DESIGN TO BE LIGHTED FROM DOME Trafalgar Day (October 21) was selected as a fittlng occasion for the laying of the foundation stone of the "Norla" gymnasium In connection with the Missions to Seamen new building in Flinders street extension. The ceremony was performed by Lady Fraser. The design of the gymnasium is an entirely novel one. The building is of reinforced concrete, with a dome having a span of 40 feet. The design is based on that of the Pantheon at Rome, and like the Pantheon has no windows. The entire lighting is from an opening In the centre of the dome. Through this aperture the light radiates equally throughout tho gymnasium; and the necessary ventilation is also secured. Between the gymnasium and the main building there is an ambulatory 12ft. wide, from which onlookers may watch the games and exercises. The floor Is to be laid with a fall to the centre for rlnking purposes. The gymnasium will complete the buildings connected with the Missions to Seamen In Melbourne, and the claim Is made that the society has not anywhere a flner or more complete set of buildings than the seamen are favored with here. The ladies who take an active interest in the Mission are inviting subscriptions to furnish the gymnasium with trapeze, punch balls, and other exercising apparatus. In 1980 M.B.John was Council President. In 1980 the School of Arts moved into their new building, 1870 Founders Hall was financed - at a cost of $800,000 - from the proceeds of the SMB Centenary Appeal, and was completed late in 1980. Extensive work was carried out on the Student Residences and the former Education Department Hostel in Victorian Street. The amphitheatre adjacent to the eastern side of the Education Buildings was constructed, together with the nearby disabled ramp. Negotiations with the Shire of Buninyong were continued for access to the campus from the Green Hill Road. Following the creation by Act of Parliament in 1978 of the Victorian Post-Secondary Education Commission (VPSEC) amendments to the same Act early in 1980 made provision for the repeal of the VIC and SCV Acts. From mid-December 1980 these latter two bodies ceased to exist when the provisions for repeal of their Acts were proclaimed. The Victorian Institute of Colleges had been set up in 1965 to aid in the co-ordination and development of a number of non-university tertiary institutions that affiliated with it from 1965 on to become Colleges of Advanced Education. In taking up this role which had been spelt out in 1964 by the martin Committee, the VIC broke new ground in a whole range of operations. It became responsible for the physical development of new building programmes and new campuses from many of its colleges, for the procurement of operating funds from the Commonwealth, for the accreditation of new courses of study, for the first non-university degrees to be awarded in Australia and so on. The Former Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education (the tertiary division of the School of Mines) was affiliated with the VIC from the outset and its progress towards a new status, rapid growth and vastly improved physical resources was closely linked to and dependent upon the efforts of the VIC. The similar co-ordinating authority - The State College of Victoria - was established in 1973 to similarly foster the autonomous development of the former teachers colleges. its early work was highly influential in the transition of the Ballarat Teachers' College into the State College of Victoria at Ballarat. On the merging of the BIAE and the SCVB in 1976, the new college continued under the co-ordination of the Victorian Institute of Colleges. The major contribution made to the progress and stature of became the Ballarat College of advanced Education by both the VIC and SCV, and their Councils and officers, over the formative years of rapid change and evolution is acknowledged and recorded with appreciation. Such efforts by the two central authorities have markedly assisted in bringing the College to the present point where its accumulated experiences and traditions provide a sound basis on which it can confidently and responsibly exercise the greater autonomy gradually passing it. The first of the Vermont Primary School buildings was erected on 1872. In 1907 a room was built onto the west side of the building and a new classroom and cloakroom were erected in 1922. Due to rising numbers and traffic volume, Vermont Progress Association urged the government to relocate the school buildings to a less prominent site, and new school buildings were erected in Nurlendi Street in the 1950's. Copied by Wendy Barrie January 2012, noting the information might be useful for future research. In 1985 the need for more shop space became apparent. Les [Bone] had plans drawn up (Surv 12/8/84) and approved by the Melton shire Council for a storeroom extension (17.800 x 9500) 1986 the small ancillary rooms at the rear of the timber church were demolished allowing the concrete slab to be laid. The building was completed in 1987. By the early 1990s the old timber Church had deteriorated, this lead to it being demolished in 2/11/1993. It was replaced with a new building containing a Pastoral Office, a meeting room and a furniture and homeware section. It was dedicated by Rev Ian Hickingbotham at 11am Sunday 5th June 1994. Service Awards were presented to 75 Opportunity Shop Volunteers by Rev Ian Hickingbotham. Funds have helped to pay for pastoral work, youth work and extra pastoral support.
