Booklet - The Ideal City Warrnambool On the Sea, 1944-1948
These booklets were issued in 1944 to 1948 by the Warrnambool Progress and Tourist Association(established in 1927). Warrnambool was the winner of the Sun News Pictorial Quest in 1928, the ‘Ideal City’ and used this title to promote the city. There had been several Tourist Associations in Warrnambool prior to 1927 and all of them promoted Warrnambool as a health resort and an ideal holiday destination with the Sea Baths in Gilles Street and the beach close by. These guides were produced during and immediately post World War Two with rationing of petrol and other goods and most people in Victoria would not have been contemplating long and expensive holidays so Warrnambool with its rail service and beach facilities would have been seen as a possible holiday destination. The booklets contain information on the tourist attractions of Warrnambool and district, black and white photographs of buildings, events and scenic spots and advertisements for local businesses. Many of the advertisements also contain photographs of business premises. These booklets are of interest as they contain photographs of Warrnambool in the mid to late 1940's and advertisements for many business operating at that time.[.1] 56 page booklet. Margaret Law (nee Bartholomew) was born on 3 December 1837 in Stirling, Scotland. She emigrated to Australia with her family aboard the Ticonderoga, arriving in Melbourne on 22 December 1852. Around one hundred passengers died of typhus during the journey, and around seventy more after arrival. Two of Margaret's siblings were among the casualties. The Bartholomew family settled in Ballarat. Around 1861, Margaret married James Nicol Law in Ballarat. They had several children, the youngest of which was James Lindsay Gordon "Lin" Law, (1881-1963). James Nicol Law was killed in a train accident in Fingal Tasmania in July 1886. Lin Law married Elsie Russell on 12 January 1915 (BHS also holds a bridge jacket given to Elsie by Lin; see T0047). They settled in Brighton, moving into 'Blairgowrie', 306 St Kilda Street, in 1920. The eldest their four children, Pauline Margaret Law (born 15 December 1915) ultimately purchased the house with her husband Hugh McLean in 1956 and lived there until 1965 when the house was demolished. In 1906, Lin and his business partner James Kerr Pearson (also a Brighton local, who lived at 12 Moule Avenue) established the shirt manufacturing company Pelaco. In 1922 the company established its factory at 23 Goodwood Street on the top of Richmond Hill; the 4.3 metre high neon 'Pelaco' sign, erected in 1939, is today heritage listed. The company was known for its innovative approach to efficiency and labour relations, discontinuing Saturday morning work in 1908 and appointing an industrial relations officer in 1928.An orange pink (salmon) with cream spot, very fine silk organza dress from circa 1840. Medal - Warrnambool Industrial and Art Exhibition Medallion and Box, 1897
This medallion was awarded by the Commissioners of the Warrnambool Industrial & Art Exhibition to ten boys from the Kew Asylum who sent handmade items (basketware, matwork etc ) for display at the Education Court of the Exhibition. The Warrnambool Industrial & Art Exhibition, held in Warrnambool from December 1896 to March 1897, partly to commemorate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, was a signal event in Warrnambool's history, with one report suggesting that over 70,000 people attended the various activities held over these months. These included concerts, operas, displays, business stands, sporting events and competitions. The earliest surviving voice recordings made in Australia were produced in Warrnambool at this Exhibition and there were various other 'firsts'. The medallion awarded to the boys at the Asylum for the high quality of their work, was made by the Melboune firm of Stokes and Sons who had a stall and machinery at the Exhibition and made small souvenir Exhibition coins on the spot for visitors to buy. As well as the gold medallion the boys were also given by the Commissioners some small souvenirs to the total value of 12 shillings. This medallion is of great historical value as it is a precious and rare memento of the 1896-7 Warrnambool Industrial & Art Exhibition, an important event in Warrnambool's history..1 A round gilt-bronze medallion with a bust image of Queen Victoria and lettering on one side and a laurel wreath and lettering on the other side .2 A square black box with a metal hinge and clasp. Book, Melbourne University Press, Heidelberg: The Land and its People 1838-1900 by Donald S. Garden, 1972
Although Heidelberg was one of the first parts of the Port Phillip District to be settled, and became important and prestigious in the early years of the colony, its history has been largely neglected. The beauty and fertility of the land and its proximity to Melbourne quickly resulted in the establishment in the 1830s and 40s of large estates by wealthy gentlemen. A romantic spot, Heidelberg became popular with picnickers and later attracted an artists' colony. The character of the area then gradually changed as a distinct village community emerged, and market gardens began to flourish. Unlike some of the suburbs closer to Melbourne, Heidelberg eventually wilted under economic pressures from which it did not fully recover until the turn of the century. This book allows us within the larger contect of the colony's fortunes and misfortunes, the struggle of Heidelberg the suburb to be born " - flyleaf. Contents: First land sales and subdivisions, gentlemen of Heidelberg and their estates and activities, infant rural community. golden fifties, decline and backwater, railway and land boom, a maturing community , the depression of the nineties. Drop Chute
From the early 1960s, the Forests Commission had pre-season arrangements in place with local aeroclubs and pilots across regional Victoria. Air observers from FCV districts routinely flew during the summer months in small, fixed-wing aircraft on fire spotting missions and to map fire boundaries. The information was often needed quickly by crews on the ground or in the control centre and these small chutes were used to drop messages and maps from the reconnaissance aircraft on a low pass above a cleared area like a football field. About 3-foot long when fully extended, they had a small pouch secured with a press stud for the map or package. The chutes were made from tough canvas with a small, weighted sandbag at one end and a long yellow streamer tail on the other to help direct its fall and locating it on the ground. Drop chutes were still in common use in the 1990s, but the increased availability of helicopters combined with improved digital data transfer made drop chutes redundant. Wooragee Landcare Group
Photograph, c2004
This photograph was taken during one of a series of workshops that were hosted by the Wooragee Landcare Group in the year 2004. In line with the main goals and missions of the Wooragee Landcare Group, these workshops aimed to promote biodiversity and land protection in the local area. Many of these workshops focused on either the protection of the endangered tiger quoll (spotted-tailed quoll) or the handling of fox infestations. Though the specific date of this photograph is unknown, it can be confirmed that it was taken outside of Wooragee Hall. Pictured from left to right is: Andrew Murray, Jerry Alexander, Tony Prowse. In the photograph, Andrew Murray appears to be demonstrating a specific technique using two tube-shaped devices. Murray's status as one of Victoria's leading authorities in quolls suggests that this particular workshop was centred around tiger quolls (spotted-tailed quolls). The Tiger Quoll is the largest of the quoll species. Largely resembling a cross between a possum and a cat, the quoll is distinctive due to the white spots that are often found all over its brown fur. This photograph is significant as it provides evidence of a project undertaken by the Wooragee Landcare Group to educate members of the public on the tiger quoll in the early 2000s in an attempt to better understand and protect the species. The Wooragee Landcare Group has been instrumental in the co-ordination of programs relating to biodiversity protection in the local area, providing great assistance to landholders.Landscape coloured photograph printed on gloss paper.Reverse: WAN NAO1EONAON2. Melbourne Water
Souvenir confectionery bowl, 1930s-40s
Melbourne Water inherited many of its water assets, such as reservoirs from its predecessor the Melbourne Metropolitan Board of Works (MMBW). They have served the organisation well and have long been celebrated for both their natural beauty and engineering ingenuity. In the nineteenth century Victoria’s fundamental need for water infrastructure went beyond merely functional solutions and reflected the English ideal of the romance and beauty that was embodied in expanses of water. The MMBW further enhanced this notion by incorporating beauty and function in to the Classical and Italianate designs of its infrastructure such as pumping houses and reservoir outlet towers. The reservoir gardens and picnic areas were landscaped with ornamental stonework, exotic trees, decorative flower beds, fern glades pools and rose gardens. All features of the water supply system became widely celebrated as beauty spots that continue to be very popular to this day with tourists and locals alike. This souvenir is a product of that flourishing tourist trade. These water supply sites continue to enhance Melbourne’s charm and liveability and are now recognised as places of cultural and historic significance. This souvenir item has been curated by Melbourne Water as it represents an important historical aspect of the organisation by demonstrating the popularity of its water asset sites as recreational places and tourist attractions, and although these sites are functional parts of the water supply system, they were also designed to be enjoyed by the public both aesthetically and recreationally. Document - Former Conrad Heinze Butcher's Shop, 1872
Source National Trust: Conrad Heinz Butchers Shop - Happy Valley Road. This building was a weatherboard cottage evidently built in three stages with the front door in the central part, planked by three paned double casements, six-paned sash windows in the rear section; front section and timber veradah with scrolled vallance. The architect and builders are unknown. The outside doors to the cellar and the simple chimney breast remain a notable feature. The original owner was Conrad Heinz a former mayor of Bendigo who with two brothers opened a butcher's shop in the building in 1872. In 1883 he moved to Mt Korong Road Iron Bark, where he carried on another thriving business and built a substantial house close by. When Conrad Heinz left Happy Valley Road, one brother had died, but his widow carried on the first butchering business with the help of a lad and one of her three daughters. The little shop and residence stood for over a century on the spot, almost untouched by modern progress. The shop was closed for 70 years at most. On the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games donor Doug Pleasance wrote- The 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games saw an evolutionary change in designer selection. A Declaration of Interest Form was communicated to over forty potential designers. The task and especially tight timelines that were involved deterred many aspirants, however, there remained eight designers with the potential we were seeking. These eight designers were paid $3,000 per submission and the winning designer, Wendy Powitt, was paid $15,000. For the first time the judging panel included two athletes, one male swimmer and one female basketballer, their influence was pivotal. Badge - Life Member Wodonga Swimming Pool Committee - Grace Emery, 1991
Mrs Barbara Emery, born in Beechworth in 1914 was one of the original members of the Wodonga community who formed a Committee and lobbied for the building of a swimming pool in Wodonga. This was prompted after many near misses and a drowning at the popular swimming spot in Wodonga Creek. She and her husband Bob, along with other Committee members lobbied the Wodonga Council and were finally able to negotiate land which fronted onto Stanley Street, Wodonga. Members of the Committee worked tirelessly to fund raise and also to build the pool itself. Countless working bees were organised to complete the construction and surrounds. The pool opened on 12th December 1959. Mr Bob Emery became the manager and Grace ran the kiosk for many years. Later reflecting on her life in the Wodonga community Mrs Emery stated, “To get the pool was a highlight in my life, the satisfaction that we could save lives.” After years of heated discussion about the future of the Stanley Street pool and the construction of a new pool, it finally closed on 31 March 2012. Mrs Emery died in Wodonga. This membership badge is significant because it was awarded to a member of the Wodonga community to recognise her service.A gold plated and enamelled badge attached to a red enamelled bar. Slide - DIGGERS & MINING. THE DIGGING - THE DIGGERS, c1850s
Diggers & Mining. The Digging - The Diggers. Slide; An article titled 'Mems From The Mount' At Eagle Hawk Gully, Bendigo, five men were plundering a tent - the inmates shouted out lustily; some of the occupants of tent near at hand rushed out with firearms, and it being moonlight, observed the robbers, and, firing into them, killed three on the spot. At the junction of Forest Creek and Bendigo roads there is a coffee shop, which twelve men attempted to attack the other evening; but a couple of bright double-barrelled fowling pieces, held by the resolute hands inside the coffee shop plainly showed them that possession; so the scoundrels skulled of. Not with-standing these stories, the Diggers generally are quiet and peaceable. While penning these few remarks, I have just heard of the discovery of another murder at the New Bendigo Flat Diggings. Rakut - Fire rake, Unknown FCV District, c 1952
Bushfire perimeter rather than bushfire area is the main control problem for firefighters on the ground. A conundrum rapidly compounded by spot fires. A small 5 ha fire can be nearly 1 km around the perimeter. That's a long way to build a control line by hand in rough bush. Dry firefighting techniques by hand were mostly confined to “knocking down” or “beating out” the flames, as well as "digging out". Digging or raking a “mineral earth” trail down to bare dirt proved most effective in forest fuels which, unlike grass, tend to retain heat and smoulder. Early tools were whatever happened to be close at hand. They were simple and primitive and included shovels, slashers, axes, hoes, beaters and rakes. A cut branch to beat the flames was often the only thing available. Farming and logging tools, developed over centuries of manual labour, and readily available at local hardware stores came into use, but little thought was given to size, weight, and balance. For years foresters experimented with combination tools. In about 1952 fire beaters and other implements were being replaced with Rakuts.Fire tool used before the introduction of RakehoesRakut - Fire Rake and cutting toolGreen and red coloured handle and 020 marking indicated which FCV District the tool belonged tobushfire -

Clothing - Midnight blue silk and velvet bodice
This bodice, belonging to Alice (Henty) Hindson has traditionally been identified as a travelling jacket by her descendants. Alice Hindson was the youngest daughter of Francis Henty and Mary Ann (Lawrence) Henty. Alice's father, Francis Henty, was the youngest son of Thomas Henty, who with his family, their retainers and property moved to the Australian colonies between 1829 and 1832. In 1834, Francis’ older brother, Edward, sailed from Launceston in Van Diemen’s Land to what was to become Portland in the western part of Port Phillip District [Victoria]. Francis, together with the first flock of Merino sheep [in Victoria], followed some months later. The first and second generations of the Henty family established vast pastoral properties in the Western part of the Port Phillip District. Francis Henty managed ‘Merino Downs’ near Casterton, while also living in his retirement at ‘Field Place' in Kew. The Henty Collection of nineteenth and twentieth century clothing, including outerwear and underwear, was collected, stored and exhibited over time by female family members descended from Francis and Mary Ann Henty. During the twentieth century, items from the collection were modelled in two fashion parades by various descendants [1937, 1959]. The items in the collection are historically and aesthetically significant, with provenance provided by oral and written tradition within or held by the family. A number of the items in the collection are very rare survivors, and provide researchers with the evidence needed to reconstruct the lives of notable women in the Port Phillip District [later Victoria] during the nineteenth and early twentieth century.Alice (Henty) Hindson's midnight blue sateen bodice is highlighted using velvet lapels, cuffs, and a rear bow. The velvet, in contrast to the plain midnight blue sateen, is embellished [in the weave] with pink and navy spots. Joined at the front with 23 round domed buttons, hooks and eyes are used to close the neckline. The bodice also features coffee-coloured lace at the front and on the cuffs, which may have been added later. The bodice has some condition issues, missing one cuff and the lace on the cuffs needing re-attaching. The inside of the bodice is heavily boned, complete with a floral chintz lining. Plan, Studley Park Estate, 1910
Prue Sanderson, in her groundbreaking ‘City of Kew Urban Conservation Study : Volume 2 - Development History’ (1988), summarised the periods of urban development and subdivisions of land in Kew. The periods that she identified included 1845-1880, 1880-1893, 1893-1921, 1921-1933, 1933-1943, and Post-War Development. These periods were selected as they represented periods of rapid growth or decline in urban development. An obvious starting point for Sanderson’s groupings involved population growth and the associated economic cycles. These cycles also highlighted urban expansion onto land that was predominantly rural, although in other cases it represented the decline and breakup of large estates. A number of the plans in the Kew Historical Society’s collection can also be found in other collections, such as those of the State Library of Victoria and the Boroondara Library Service. A number are however unique to the collection. The Kew Historical Society collection includes almost 100 subdivision plans pertaining to suburbs of the City of Melbourne. Most of these are of Kew, Kew East or Studley Park, although a smaller number are plans of Camberwell, Deepdene, Balwyn and Hawthorn. It is believed that the majority of the plans were gifted to the Society by persons connected with the real estate firm - J. R. Mathers and McMillan, 136 Cotham Road, Kew. The Plans in the collection are rarely in pristine form, being working plans on which the agent would write notes and record lots sold and the prices of these. The subdivision plans are historically significant examples of the growth of urban Melbourne from the beginning of the 20th Century up until the 1980s. A number of the plans are double-sided and often include a photograph on the reverse. A number of the latter are by noted photographers such as J.E. Barnes.Coloured lithograph of a subdivision plan of the Studley Park Estate, bordered by Yarra, Willsmere Road and the Outer Circle Railway line. The estate was listed in 1910 and was the subject of a planning dispute between the developer and the Town of Kew in relation to flood levels and the suitability of the land for housing. In many cases the names of streets were subsequently changed. The layout was also affected by the creation of the Eastern Freeway. A newspaper report of the day described the subdivision as a: "GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY. We are pleased to submit for PRIVATE SALE that magnificent ESTATE, situated only 4 1/2 miles from the Melbourne General Post Office, STUDLEY PARK ESTATE. KF/NV. Doubtless the CHEAPEST LAND EVER OFFERED having extensive frontages to the prettiest spot on the River Yarra and the National Park, commanding lovely river and landscape views, and acknowledged to be the finest land available so close to the city. Animal specimen - Dollar Bird, Trustees of the Australian Museum, 1860-1880
The Dollar Bird is the only member of the Roller family found in Australia and can be found in forests and woodland areas. The name of this bird comes from the large white spot on the underside of each wing which resemble silver dollars. They travel to Australia each year to breed from New Guinea and the surrounding area. Their main source of food is insects which they hunt during flight. They capture these foods while displaying skillful aerial pursuits. They then return to the same perch they were upon when they left to catch their food. This specimen is part of a collection of almost 200 animal specimens that were originally acquired as skins from various institutions across Australia, including the Australian Museum in Sydney and the National Museum of Victoria (known as Museums Victoria since 1983), as well as individuals such as amateur anthropologist Reynell Eveleigh Johns between 1860-1880. These skins were then mounted by members of the Burke Museum Committee and put-on display in the formal space of the Museum’s original exhibition hall where they continue to be on display. This display of taxidermy mounts initially served to instruct visitors to the Burke Museum of the natural world around them, today it serves as an insight into the collecting habits of the 19th century. This specimen is part of a significant and rare taxidermy mount collection in the Burke Museum. This collection is scientifically and culturally important for reminding us of how science continues to shape our understanding of the modern world. They demonstrate a capacity to hold evidence of how Australia’s fauna history existed in the past and are potentially important for future environmental research. This collection continues to be on display in the Museum and has become a key part to interpreting the collecting habits of the 19th century. This juvenile Dollar bird's feet are a faded brown and the bill is a light yellow. The colour of this specimen's head and neck are a cool grey which fades to a patch of bright purple on its upper chest. The back is grey while the underbelly and wings are a light blue-grey. The tail feathers are tipped in black. The specimen is standing on a wooden mount.taxidermy mount, taxidermy, animalia, burke museum, beechworth, australian museum, skin, reynell eveleigh johns, bird, dollar bird -

Photograph, Returned soldiers picnic, Police Paddocks, Queenstown, c.1916, c.1916
Possibly a picnic for returned servicemen from Gallipoli. This photo was taken in front of the Police Paddocks with the police station on the left. Model T Fords parked with soldiers, drivers and locals resting on the police paddock in front of the Queenstown (St Andrews) station. The RACV Volunteer Motor Corps service during World War One was the reason the organisation was granted its Royal prefix. Automobile Club of Victoria members volunteered their time and vehicles to collect returning soldiers and nurses from ships at Princes Pier, Port Melbourne. Trips were also often arranged for convalescing soldiers to country areas for picnics and to “revive spirits”. The soldiers were also picked up from the Austin Hospital in Heidelberg and Mont Park Military Hospital in Macleod. Queenstown (St Andrews) was a common picnic spot. The Evelyn Observer reported on June 9. 1916 "Some 75 returned soldiers visited Queenstown on Sunday, 28th ult., and were hospitably entertained by local residents who had provided refreshments sufficient for 150. Mr. Milne in an appropriate speech welcomed the soldiers, and Mr. Robison suitably responded.” The photo was reproduced page 108 of “The Diamond Valley Story" by Diane H. Edwards. This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). The collection of over 500 images is held in partnership between Eltham District Historical Society and Yarra Plenty Regional Library (Eltham Library) and is now formally known as the 'The Shire of Eltham Pioneers Photograph Collection.' It is significant in being the first community sourced collection representing the places and people of the Shire's first one hundred years.Digital image, 16 x 24 and 12.5 x 9 cm and 4 x 5 inch B&W Neg sepp, shire of eltham pioneers photograph collection, queenstown, cars, police station, st andrews, soldiers, picnic, exhibition yprl 2019-12, gallipoli, model t ford, pioneers and painters, police paddocks, retuned soldiers -
