This book was given to Henry Huntingdon Smith in 1918 by a grateful sister of a soldier killed in World War One. Private Percy Palmer was listed as coming from the Warrnambool area even though his enlistment place was given as Bannockburn. H.H.Smith (1857-1941) is an important figure in Warrnambool’s history. He had a bakery business at the corner of Lava and Fairy Streets. He was a Warrnambool Councillor and Mayor, a Hospital Committee member for 39 years, a Methodist church office-bearer and an active worker for the welfare of local returned soldiers. It was said that he greeted every returning soldier at the Warrnambool Railway Station. Mrs Sharpe was one of those who benefited from his solicitude and kindness. This is book is of antiquarian interest but more importantly it is a lovely memento of Henry Smith’s untiring concern for local soldiers returning from World War One and for their family members. This book by J. M. Barrie was a prize given in 1927 by Warrnambool High School to Janet Slade. She was born in Warrnambool in 1913 and marred Stewart Lindsay in 1935. The presenter of the prize, Cr Frederick Williamson, had a tailoring shop in Liebig Street and was a City Councillor from 1924 to 1930, 1934 to 1939 and 1942 to 1945. He was a Mayor of Warrnambool in 1944-5. George Langley was the Head Master of Warrnambool High School from 1924 to 1940. He had a distinguished military career in both World Wars One and Two. Warrnambool High School was established in 1907 and moved to its present site in Albert Park in 1961. It merged with Warrnambool North Technical School to form Warrnambool College in 1995. This book is of interest as a memento of several features of Warrnambool society in the 1920s - Warrnambool High School, a pupil, Janet Slade, an important Head Master, Colonel George Langley and a Warrnambool businessman and Councillor, Frederick Williamson. This book belonged to Agnes Swinton (b.1900). She was the daughter of John and Charlotte Swinton of Warrnambool. Her father, John, was the fifth son of William and Ann Swinton who came to Warrnambool in 1854 and established a store in Timor Street. The Swinton family still operates a commercial business in the same street and the name ‘Swinton’ is well-known in Warrnambool. Agnes’ sister, Doris had a distinguished military career in World War Two and was a long-term Matron of the Warrnambool Hospital. This book is of considerable interest as it belonged to a member of the Swinton family which has been connected with Warrnambool’s history since the 1850s. This is a leather-covered book of 216 pages, plus a Supplement of 12 pages. The text is printed in two columns to a page. The front cover has gold lettering printed into the leather. The Warrnambool Family History Group was established in 1980. It has been running Warrnambool cemetery tours for a great number of years with the late Marie Boyce being a prominent organizer of these tours. The tours are usually held in January and on Anzac Day and over recent years have concentrated on a theme to provide information on a certain group of people (eg Mayors, war heroes). These sheets are a good example of the graves visited during the Warrnambool Cemetery tours and the information given on these people. This book is a novel by John Whitson published in 1907 and it could have belonged to either Thomas Redford Senior or his son. Thomas Redford Senior (d. 1909) was in the produce business with Frederick Stevens in Warrnambool in the 1860s and in 1879 he took over the business under the name of T.Redford and Co. This business operated at the corner of Fairy and Timor Streets. Thomas Redford Junior was a Major in World War One. He was killed at Gallipoli and his body was recovered from the site of his death by members of his company who were also from Warrnambool. Notable among these men was Paul McGinness, a war hero who was later to found the airline Qantas. This book is of interest as it belonged to a member of the Redford family, prominent in business in Warrnambool and in military exploits in World War One. The book gives us a idea of which novelists were popular reading in the early years of the 20th century. This is a hard cover book of 283 pages. It has a light brown cover with lettering in black, gold and brown, a colour image of a rose on the spine and a colour image of a house and a car on the front cover. This book has been written by Walter Murdoch, the distinguished Australian academic and essayist. Walter Murdoch (1874-1970) gained an Arts Degree at the University of Melbourne with first class honours in philosophy and logic. In 1901 Murdoch came to Warrnambool in partnership with James Scott as co-proprietors of the private school, Warrnambool College. They bought out the Warrnambool Grammar School previously run by John Stanley and, when Scott retired, Murdoch became the sole proprietor and headmaster of the school. While he was in Warrnambool Murdoch continued to write for Melbourne newspapers and published a book, ‘The Struggle For Freedom’, covering the constitutional history of Britain and Australia. This book sold 10,000 copies in its first year. In 1904 Murdoch left Warrnambool to take up a position as a lecturer in English at the University of Melbourne. Later he became the foundation Professor of English at the University of Western Australia and later its Chancellor. Murdoch University in Western Australia is named after him. Murdoch became a household name to two generations of Australians through his radio broadcasts and his literary columns in several Australian newspapers. He published over 40 books and was knighted in 1964. This book is of interest as an example of the writings of Walter Murdoch, important not only in the history of Australian literature but also of note in the history of Warrnambool. This book was given in 1941 as a prize to Shirley MacDonald from the South Warrnambool Sunday School. This Sunday School was operated by the South Warrnambool Presbyterian Church and existed from 1902 to 2004. The church was in MacDonald Street which was named after John MacDonald, an early teacher and auctioneer in Warrnambool but no details have been found on Shirley MacDonald. This book is of interest as a memento from the South Warrnambool Sunday School and as an example of the type of book given as prizes to young girls in Warrnambool during World War Two. This is a hard cover book of 256 pages. The cover is red with black lettering and the there is a dust cover partly pasted onto the hard cover. This book belonged to James and Catherine McGinness (both names are in the book). James McGinness (1842-1905) came to the Framlingham area in the 1870s and married Catherine Taafe in 1880. Members of the McGinness families had been involved in hotelkeeping in the Purnim district. James and Catherine McGinness had a farm at Framlingham (including the breeding of horses) with the property known as Riverview. The farm and derelict remnants of the house still exist today. The youngest son of James and Catherine was Paul McGinness, a hero of two World Wars and the founder of the airline Qantas. The original spelling of the surname was ‘McGuinness’ but James altered the spelling to avoid confusion over names with his brother John. This book is of interest because it belonged to the McGinness family of Riverview, Framlingham. Several of the names in the book are marked, especially those of ‘McGuinness’ showing that perhaps the McGinness family of Framlingham had expectations of claiming some of the money listed as unclaimed. This is a hard cover book of 472 pages. At the back of the book are several pages giving addresses of lawyers and opinions of the Press. The cover is red with an embedded pattern on the front cover and gold lettering on the front cover and the spine. The inscriptions are handwritten in blue and black ink. This letter has been written from France in 1917 by Private Edwin Johnson Carter to his friend Mrs Maggie Craig. It gives details of events in his life at the time – in the trenches in World War One. Private Edwin Johnson was a farmer from Nullawarre who enlisted in 1916 and served in France. He was drowned when the mail boat R.M.S. Leinster was torpedoed by a German submarine in the Irish Sea in October 1918. Private Johnson was returning from a visit to Ireland while on leave. This is an original letter from World War One It was written by a soldier from Nullawarre and has a particular poignancy as he writes: “My work brings me in contact with all that hurts in war. I am somewhat calm to it now but if I am spared to return I fear it shall be my nightmare.” He did not return but we have this letter to remind us of the horrors men such as Private Carter endured. This is an envelope containing a letter of two pages sent by a soldier on active service in France in World War One. Both the envelope and the letter are buff-coloured. The envelope has an image of an Australian Military Forces Y.M.C.A. logo, a Post Office stamp and a Censor stamp. The address is handwritten in pencil. This letter was written during World War One from France in 1916 by Private George McDowall to a friend Mrs Maggie Craig. Private George Francis Ernest McDowall was a farmer from Nirranda who enlisted in August 1915. He landed in Egypt in1916 and was transferred to the 8th Battalion. He was killed in action at Pozieres on 25 July 1916 and was buried in France. This letter is an original one and is an important relic from World War One – from a soldier from the Warrnambool area who did not return. The letter is headed ‘From my little dug-out in the trench in France’ and he wrote: ‘It is a great life this if one can only get through it’. He did not survive the war and was killed only two and a half months after this letter was written. This is a letter written from France in 1916 during World War One. It is handwritten in pencil on buff-coloured paper. The paper has been folded and it is a little torn at the top. These two items were sent in the 1940s to Tom Terrington of Framlingham ( about 28 kilometres north east of Warrnambool) from Donald Mackintosh. Tom Terrington (b. 1897) worked at various jobs until he took over the Framlingham store in the 1940s. He was a scholarly person with a wide knowledge of English literature. He wrote poetry and researched and wrote extensively on Framlingham history. Donald Mackintosh (1866-1951) was Australia’s first Olympic shooting gold medallist. He competed in trapshooting events all over the world, winning 30 gold medals, making a considerable amount of money and holding the world trapshooting championship title from 1903 to 1908. He was a keen photographer and wrote poetry under the name of ‘The Rambler’. This small folder is of great interest as it contains a poem sent to Tom Terrington by Donald Mackintosh (The Rambler). Tom Terrington is important in Framlingham’s history and his friendship with Donald Mackintosh, an Australian and world trapshooting champion and a poet is of considerable interest. The tone of the poem echoes also the despondency felt by Australians during the darkest days of World War Two. This is a piece of cream thickened paper folded in two with a typed copy of a poem pasted on the inside of the paper and a copy of a prose piece typed in ornate script and pasted on to a piece of cardboard and enclosed in the cream folder. This booklet was published on the recommendation of the Commonwealth government as part of a plan to offer protection to the people in the event of air strikes. Local councils and individuals were called to help to protect themselves in taking precautions,. The booklet itself sets out action to be taken in the event of an air raid happening, lighting restrictions fire prevention, refuge rooms and garden shelters and risks from air raids. It contains the relevant siren signals which denote different types of events and explains in detail various aspects of preparing for possible attack. There was discussion about issues such as evacuation of children should such an event occur with the focus primarily on the larger centres such as Geelong and Melbourne. From 1942 the number of air attacks increased mainly from Japan on the northern and western parts of Australia including over 60 on Darwin. Attacks continued into 1943 and it wasn’t until later in that year that the Prime Minister, John Curtin announced that the threat of invasion had passed.While the link to Warrnambool’s history is tenuous, it was a government publication to all persons in the state of Victoria in 1941.This item relates to a significant period in Australia’s history. All Australians were affected by the war. It has historical and scientific or research interest as it gives a number of diagrams and possible plans and the effectiveness of same. The Australian Comforts Fund was formed during the first World War and was an amalgamation of various organisations which were sending items of comfort such as toiletries, clothing and food to Australian troops who were fighting overseas. It ceased its work and was dissolved in 1920 at the ceasation of the war but was started again to continue the same work in 1939.In Australia it rivalled the work of the red Cross and many of the volunteers involved were women. As well as making and providing items themselves there was major fundraising to purchase further items. Over the course of the war they provided over 1.5 million hampers. This certificate was presented to Mrs Steward for valuable services rendered to the Australian Comforts Fund during World War 1939-1945. The Australian Comforts fund was wound up in June 1946.This certificate recognises the work of one of our residents to a fund which was Australia wide and would have been one of numerous certificates presented around the country. This post card has been sent from a military camp in England by Private George Hall to his niece Myra. Private Hall was a farmer from Purnim who enlisted in August 1915 (14th Battalion, 15 Reinforcement Group). He was aged 30 at the time. He left Australia in 1916 and transferred to 3 Field Artillery Brigade. He returned to Australia in 1919. The card gives no details of Private Hall’s activities at the time but indicates that he had sent several post cards to members of his family. This post card is of interest as an example of the many beautiful embroidered post cards that were sent by Australian soldiers to family members during World War One. The cards were usually made in France and sent from there but in this case was sent from England. The card is also of interest because it is a personal message sent from a local soldier from Purnim during World War One This is a post card from World War One. It has a written message on the back from Private George Hall to his niece Myra and it has a piece of embroidery on the front of the card. This depicts a black cat with the British colours of red, white and blue around its collar and other ornaments – a white horseshoe, a Union Jack, a white pedestal and red, green and white greenery. The words ‘Good Luck’ are stitched in yellow. The stitching is on white silk which is somewhat stained. There is a crimped border in lightweight cardboard around the embroidery. This tie pin belonged to Mirth Marfell who was a student at Warrnambool High School from 1929 to 1930 and from 1935 to 1936. Warrnambool High School was established as an Agricultural High School in 1907 and, after a merger with Warrnambool North Technical School, it is known today as Warrnamboool College. Mirth Marfell, the daughter of Henry and Helena Marfell, was born in Warrnambool in 1919. This is a Warrnambool Technical School badge of the 1920s and 30s. Warrnambool Technical School was established in Timor Street in 1913. The senior section was later called Warrnambool Technical College and then Warrnambool Institute of Advanced Education. The latter institute moved to Sherwood Park, Warrnambool and became the present-day Warrnambool campus of Deakin University. Warrnambool Technical School moved to Caramut Road, Warrnambool and is today known as Brauer College. The badge was donated by Mirth Marfell, the daughter of Henry and Helena Marfell. She was born in Warrnambool in 1919.
