Catherine Holmes married William Coghill Junior. William died in 1884. This is possibly a photo of Catherine in her mourning clothes. They had no children. His estate passed to Catherine. In 1886 Catherine accompanied by her brother, Edward Carter Holmes, Mr. Holmes a farmer at Ascot and her companion Mrs. Mark Gardiner [Gardner], wife of the contractor for laying down the wood pavement in Elizabeth- street, sailed for Queensland aboard the elegant steamship, ‘Ly-ee-Moon’ to visit her sister Adelaide Reid and purchase a property in the Darling Downs, Qld. Tragically all three, and the gold sovereigns they were carrying to purchase same, were lost when the steamship struck rocks and was wrecked off the rugged Green Cape Coast, just south of Bega, New South Wales [Jane Dyer, 15 June 2024]Black and white photograph of a seated woman wearing black clothing, a cap with centrally parted hair. Australian Gliding Museum
Machine - Glider – Sailplane, 1971
The Let 13 Blanik was designed in 1956 by Karel Dlouhý of VZLÚ Letňany as a training glider. It filled that role very well and approximately 3000 have been built since production started in 1958. However, following a fatal accident involving a Blanik in Austria in 2010 that raised concerns about main spar metal fatigue, the type was grounded in Europe and America. In Australia, the extension of the life of this type of glider beyond 5000 hours / 18000 launches is dependent on compliance with directives for the inspection and modification of fatigue critical components. It is understood that VH-GAQ was built in 1971 and first registered on 14 August 1972. It is a Blanik that has been retired from service because of the metal fatigue concerns that apply to the type generally and the expense involved in complying with the applicable directives for on-going airworthiness certification. VH-GAQ was donated to the Australian Gliding Museum by the Australian Junior Gliding Club in 2010. Popular mass produced, metal, two seat sailplane. Used by many clubs in Australia in the 1970s. The Blanik VH-GAQ is a large two seat glider – sailplane of metal construction. It is finished in a white colour scheme with red detailing consisting of a red fuselage nose and adjoining red stripe along the fuselage sides to about midships. The control surfaces (ailerons, flaps, elevators and rudder) are covered with aircraft fabric and painted silver. The Perspex canopy fully encloses the cockpit which is fully equipped for dual flying. Brighton Historical Society
Uniform - Jacket, Military jacket, circa 1850
This jacket appears to be part of the uniform of a junior officer of the 11th (North Devonshire) Regiment of Foot, a line infantry regiment of the British Army. Several companies of the regiment were stationed in Sydney and Hobart between 1845 and 1857. The jacket was acquired by Brighton Historical Society around 1971 as part of a collection of clothing belonging to the Ward Cole family of 'St Ninians', 10 Miller Street, Brighton. George Ward Cole was an early member of the Victorian Parliament and his family featured prominently in Melbourne Society in their time; the family lived at St Ninians from around 1841 until the early 1900s. It is not known who the jacket belonged to or how it came into the Ward Coles' possession. While George Ward Cole was a military man, his service was with the British Navy and during an earlier period than is indicated by this jacket (1807-1817).A red and green flocked cotton military jacket believed to be part of the uniform of the 11th (North Devonshire) Regiment of Foot. The jacket features a green high stand collar secured at the throat by three brass hook and eye closures. The red jacket bodice secures down the centre front with fourteen brass buttons and finishes approximately at the navel. The bottom line sits on the waistline at the sides and back, tapering lower to the naval at the centre front. The bottom line features two substantial brass hooks one on either side of the waist to secure the jacket to the pants. The shoulder line of the jacket is a neat tight fit on the true shoulder, with a slim fitting curved sleeve with gathered fullness at the shoulder. On each shoulder is a metallic corded epaulet with North Devon XI button and second button with floral motif. At the base of the sleeve is a green cuff like detail with a curved elongated point towards the elbow. At the base of each sleeve is a further two brass regiment buttons. The cream woolen jacket lining is lightly quilted over the breast.st ninians, george ward cole, brighton, military, british army, devonshire regiment, north devonshire regiment of foot -

Slide, Toys, 1963
Colour slide of large number of toys collected for distribution. There were wooden rocking horses and planes. Also soft toys such as Humpty Dumpty, teddies and koalas. The toys were part of an arrangement with the Department of Education. Schools would produce the toys, often in wood work classes and they were donated to Legacy and Carry On. The toys were given to Junior Legatees at the Government House Christmas Party. Excess toys were passed to a dozen additional charities. The scheme started in 1949 and by 1962 over 8,200 toys were donated, from 201 schools. The total to that date was over 72,500 toys. It appears to be 1963 as there was space for the tally to be completed. Was with many other slides taken in the 1950s and 1960s. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. Slide, Legacy House in Market Street, 1950s
A slide image of three ladies in a waiting room, believed to be in the old Legacy House in Market Street, probably from the 1950s. The portrait of Stan Savige was painted by E. Buckmaster for the Archibald prize in 1946. Legacy rented the Market St premises for many years. It was part of the Western Market complex that was demolished and redeveloped in the early 1960s. Legacy held meetings, activities and the girls classes on the second floor of the building, accessed by this staircase, but it was barely fit for purpose. In the 1940s a generous donation by an anonymous donor meant Legacy could purchase a building at 342 Swanston St, but due to several factors were never able to inhabit it. Finally it was sold in 1954 and Junior Legacy Melbourne purchased 289-299 Swanston Street Melbourne (previously called Red Cross House) in 1956 from the Commonwealth Government and moved in after refurbishing it.A record of the Market Street building that Legacy occupied for many years until 1956-7.Colour slide of three ladies in the waiting room at Legacy House in Market Street in a yellow cardboard mount with piece of glass.Handwritten 'Waiting room Legacy House. Slide, Stanhope, 1950s
Slide photograph of the exterior of Stanhope on a cloudy day. Believed to be from from the 1950s, very similar to 02511 and could be from the same film. Stanhope was a residence run by Melbourne Legacy to take care of children whose fathers were deceased servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself, or they needed to stay in Melbourne for further education. It was at 1245 Burke Road Kew (corner of Cotham Rd). It was purchased by Red Cross in 1945 who refurbished it and leased it back to Legacy for as long as it was required as a residence for junior legatees. It was handed back to Red Cross in 1981. The slides have been photographed to make digital images and moved to archive quality sleeves. Book - Book, register, Legacy Archives Index
An early attempt to catalogue Legacy memorabilia which refers to 33 boxes of items split into subject matter such as 'History of Legacy', 'Finance Committee', 'Junior Legacy', 'Shrine', Group and Branch histories, and photograph albums. No indication of when it was compiled or by whom though it is presumed to be the Archive committee that was established by Frank Doolan who collected a lot of the items in the archive cabinets. Uses a rudimentary system of cataloguing e.g. 'H1. Inauguration of Remembrance Club. Box 1', where 'H' refers to History. 'S' refers to Shrine. Includes three loose typed and handwritten sheets listing films and tapes. A high number of History documents (H1 - H63) are filed in Box 25 - 01475 onwards. Believed to be from the archive project in the early 1970s by L/ Frank Doolan and L/ Brian Armstrong. This item appears to have catalogued at 00507 as well. Records an extended Board Meeting which took place from 7.30-11.30 p.m on Thursday 16 July 1928 at the office of the Hon Sec in Collins Street , adjourning until 1.00-8.15 pm on Monday 20 August 1928 at the Alcazar Cafe, and then from 1.00-2.15 pm on Wednesday 22 August 1928, also at the Alcazar Cafe. No mention is made of any meals, but it can be assumed that such a long meeting included both food and drink. 56 items were discussed including membership, Junior Legatee activities and supervision, non-attendance by rostered Legatees and conference matters. Mention was made of the stewardship of the Club origin and history; unfortunately despite this promising start much has been lost over the years since. After this epic meeting, the next one was scheduled for 13 September, 1928.Not only do the minutes record the work done by Legacy in the early days, but illustrates the different style of governance in more leisurely times.White foolscap copy sheets x 8 pages of a board of management meeting"H49" (see Item 00937) in blue ballpoint.board of management, founding legatee -

Magazine, Ruyton Reporter, 1992
The Ruyton Reporter (formerly known as Ruyton Reports) captures the essential Ruyton Girls' School experience for the broader school community. It has been produced since 1986.The record has strong historic significance as it pertains to one of the oldest girls' school in Victoria, Australia. Ruyton was founded in 1878 in the Bulleen Road, Kew, home of newly widowed Mrs Charlotte Anderson (now High Street South). Thus, the record can be used as a reference example for research into Victorian school history. It also gives insight into the types of activities and events undertaken at Ruyton Girls' School during the period of its production. The record's significance is further enhanced by its exceptionally well-documented provenance, having remained the property of Ruyton Girls' School since its production.Colour publication printed on paper with staple binding. 12 pages.Front Page: THE R RUYTON / RECTE ET FIDE LITER / Reporter / WINTER EDITION 1992 / SPECIAL / FEATURES / 1992 VCE / RESULTS. / WHERE ARE / THEY NOW? / THE JOHN BATE / CENTRE OPENS. / THE 1992 / RUYTON FAIR. / OUR HAT TRICK! / RUYTON RUNS-UP 3rd ATHS WIN / STOP PRESS / A big 114 point winning margin gave Ruyton its third / consecutive Athletics championship this year. / A big thank you to Sports Co-ordinators Mrs Dulke, / Mr Summerton and Mrs Lachal - the master tactician. / And congratulations to all 104 Ruyton competitors. / You were great. Costume, Ballarat Teachers' College Blazer, c1950
This blazer was worn by Joyce Murphy at the Ballarat Teacher's College. David van Leeuwen decided not to have a blazer as he was older, and thought it too much like school days. He attended the Ballarat Teachers' College when 27 years, after serving in the army. Because he didn’t have a blazer he didn’t have anywhere to put the colours so he offered them to Joyce Murphy as they were going out together. There should have been a football embroidery as well, but Joyce Murphy didn’t want that on her blazer because it was too boyish. Gift of Joyce van Leeuwen nee Joyce Murphy, 2014A blue woollen blazer with pocket featuring the Ballarat Teachers' College logo, sports colours, and representation in tennis, basketball and hockey. The pocket is a dual one. Joyce van Leeuwen remembers: 'Towards the end of our College year, were were given written authorisation denoting our sporting teams, to take to Paterson & Powell for embroidery on our blazer pockets. On my pocket, the hockey sticks, the BB for basketball, as netball was then called, all mine. The tennis racquet is David's [van Leeuwen], as is the braid topping the pocket denoting the College colours. College colours were authorised for excellence in a chosen sport, and in our year, 1950, only two men's colours were awarded - David's for basketball and Neil Trezise's for football. Neil went on to play for the Geelong Cats [AFL football] and later was Victorian minister for Sport for some time.'ballarat teachers' college, blazer, joyce murphy, joyce van leeuwen, paterson powell, colours, embroidery, david van leeuwen, van leeuwen, costume, uniform, textiles -
