This work is part of the Jan Feder Memorial Ceramics Collection .Jan Feder is an alumna of Federation University having studied ceramics at the Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education (now Federation Univesity Gippsland campus). Jan Feder was respected by all students for her diligence and technical ability. Her tragic death in 1981 evoked an immediate response from her peers for a memorial. Students discussed a number of memorial options, such as funds for equipment, scholarships and awards. The decision to commence a collection was made based on the idea that all future students culd benefit from the availability of a collection, whereas only a very few individuals could benefit from a scholarship. Students immediately set about raising money by selling 'seconds' called 'Junque Sales'. a total of $760.00 was raised and the first two works purchased were by Victor Greenaway and Victoria Howlett. Ceramic works were purchased from visiting lecturers who became leading ceramic artists around the world, as well as from many of the staff who taught at the Gippsland Campus. The Artist in Residendence Program assisted the collection, with many resident artists conrtibuting to the Collection (ie Robin Welch, Anna Zamorska, Sandy Brown), as well as international guests. This work was designed by Marlene Drysdale and Lynne Holten, and was created by a large group of artists made up of Aboriginal students from the Morwell KODE school, campus staff and students at the CAIS Centre, and elders and community members from the region, An exterior mural in the ampitheatre at Gippsland Campus. Wendy WHITFORD (1942- ) Born Ballarat, Victoria Wendy Whitford'swork has an Her emphasis is on texture and colour., and she paints in acrylic and produces limited edition prints on an etching press. She attended evening Life Drawing classes with Geoffrey Mainwaring at the Ballarat School of Mines, and undertook group srudies with artist Edward Heffernan. Undertaking full time formal art training inher thirties,, she completed a Diploma of Art at the Ballarat College of Advanced Education (later Federation University in the early 1980s. During this time she was introduced to Printmaking by Satish Sharma,and has alternated printmaking with painting until the present day. Tony HANNING (1950- ) Dr Tony Hanning is an internationally recognised glass artist whose work is represented in all major collections in Australia and many overseas collections including the V&A Museum in London and the Tacoma Art Museum in the USA. The imagery in Tony Hanning's work often is representative of the Gippsland landscape. SCHOOLS OF MINES HAD BEEN ESTABLISHED AT SEVERAL OTHER DISTRICT CENTRES INCLUDING MARYBOROUGH AND CRESWICK, OTHERS WERE TO FOLLOW AT ARARAT, STAWELL AND DAYLESFORD 1890 CLUNES BOROUGH COUNCIL WITH MR JOSEPH BRYANT LEADING, APPROACHED THE BALLARAT SCHOOL OF MINES REQUESTING SUPPORT FOR A BRANCH SCHOOL AT CLUNES OFFERING ELEMENTARY CLASSES WITH SMB STAFF AS LECTURERS SMB COUNCIL AGREED TO STAFF THE SUGGESTED CLASSES. SEVERAL PUBLIC LECTURES WERE ARRANGED AT CLUNES TO HELP CREATE INTEREST IN THE NEW CLUNES BRANCH OF SMB. CLASSES SOMMENCED SOME AT THE CLUNES FREE LIBRARY AND SOME AT THE NEW NORTH CLUNES MINE OFFICE/LABORATORY PER FAVOUR OF JOSEPH BRYANT WHO WAS HONORARY DIRECTOR OF THE BRANCH SCHOOL. 1891 LOWER STUDENT NUMBERS CAUSING CONCERN.. EDUCATION DEPARTMENT REGULATIONS FOR SCHOOLS OF MINES AND TECHNICAL SCHOOLS AND CONFLICTING VIEWS OF GOVERMENTMINISTERS RE SUBJECTS THAT COULD BE TAUGHT , CAUSED DIFFICULTIES. BUILDING COMMENCED 1892 NEW BUILDING OPENED IN FEBRUARY.
