Mac's Shortbread Co dates its history back to a family bakery in Abbotsford opened in the 1860's producing bread for the goldfields. This eventually became McAlpine's Flour. This business was sold in 1960 and the family then purchased a cake shop, leading to building a biscuit factory. (This is thought to have been the Surrey Hills site). The company outgrew this and moved to 5 Tate Drive, Kerang. (Further research required.) Juli HAAS (26 April 1952- 02 March 2014) Born Melbourne Juli HAAS (1952-2013) Born Melbourne Juli Haas mainly produced watercolours, artist’s books and limited edition prints using the printmaking technique of Drypoint. She often explores the lives of everyday people with her work often portraying the darker side of human nature in an interior world filled with fantasy and absurdity. Themes throughout her work incorporate the use of childhood memory, place and a sense of personal history. Inspiration is derived from observing her own environment, which is then developed into a portrayal of the absurdity and drama of everyday human situations. Haas applies layers of intense and vibrant colour, which also serves to reinforce the narrative element that runs through the work. The psychological drama that informs this narrative exposes the darker side of life, expressing elements of anger, violence and isolation. Juli Haas obtained the following qualifications: * 1994-95 Master of Arts (Research). Khaki coloured dress trousers with pressed seam running vertically down front and back of each leg. Two hip pockets, one on each side, with rear pocket on right side fastened by plastic button; additional pocket sits in waistline on right side. Trousers have seven loops for a belt and smaller loops for metal inserts which support a Sam Brown belt. Trousers fastened by a zipper in front and flap which secures with a plastic button on the interior. Spare button is sewn into the interior waistband. Leg hem is reinforced at front and back with strip of synthetic binding, presumably to aid against wear from rubbing on boots. This flying suit would have been worn by a pilot of the Royal Australian Air Force. It is a drill suit and most likely was not used in active service. This flying suit dates to 1988. It is no longer manufactured and is an historically significant article of military clothing. It is also in good condition.Olive drab coloured overalls. Full length sleeves and full length legs. Two pockets on the front of each leg. One zip at the front of each leg with extra fabric in the interior for fabric width enhancement. One access zip on each hip. Two diagonal breast pockets, either side of chest. One small pocket on each arm. All pockets are fastened with metallic brass colour zips. Another pocket on the left upper arm with stitched sections for storing pens. A silver coloured metallic pen holder is clipped and stitched into this section. Royal Australian Navy officer's peaked cap with a woven dark navy band and off-white piqued top in synthetic material. Patent leather peak is black with green underside. The cap has a black patent leather chin strap that runs across the top of the peak, secured on left and right with press stud buttons. Above the peak is an embroidered insignia of the Royal Australian Navy, a crown with an anchor underneath. This style of collar has a long history in the Royal Australian Navy, descending from the uniform style of the 19th century Royal Navy.Rectangular shaped collar with three white parallel lines running the border of the collar. The item is a representative example of previously standard issue uniform and is in excellent condition. As a set alongside 0040.2, the uniform has aesthetic significance in its design, incorporating the Disruptive Pattern style of camouflage which has its roots in the 1980s and continues to be adapted into uniform design by the Defence Force.Field shirt in disruptive pattern colours of green, khaki and browns. This hat was worn by D. P. Bright, whilst serving in the Royal Australian Navy, presumably on the H.M.A.S. Leeuwin.Sailor's hat with removable ribbon which sits on exterior band with machine embroidered inscriptions, tied in a bow at the back. Hat is piqued, stiffened white cotton with two white eyelets on both left and right side. Dark navy band on exterior with brown leather lining on the interior, with cotton bow on interior back. On interior of hat, the hat contains a plastic lining on which there is an inscription. This legging is part of a pair of leggings which presumably would have been worn by a cavalry soldier in the Royal Australian Army to protect the lower legs when riding in armed conflict. This item most likely dates to the World War One era.As an article of WWI protective clothing for use in armed conflict by a cavalry soldier, this item is of historic value. Brown leather cylindrical shaped legging with two leather straps for fastening. One strap is attached to the lower edge of the interior. This crosses over the lower exterior and passes through a leather loop at the front, which is attached by four metallic nails. The strap then wraps around the gaiter and passes through a second leather loop at the front, which is also attached by four corroded metallic nails. This strap (along with a shorter strap that is sewn and nailed into the top of the legging) pass through two buckles. The upper buckle is made of brass and the lower is made of steel. The straps then tuck under three final leather loops, two of which are bolted to the legging with three corroded nails. There should be a third loop here that is missing. General Motors Holden imported this vehicle into Australia from Canada in approximately 1941 or 1942 as 4 door sedan. The Oldsmobile company believed that at the end of WW2 there would be a need for coupes worldwide. GMH at that time were heavily committed to he war effort and the proposal was to convert this vehicle into a coupe in line for Coup with the Oldsmobile policy. The conversion went ahead under some secrecy as the war effort had priority. The result was by the end of war this coupe was manufactured at the GMH Fisherman's Bend plant. The car was taken to both Brisbane and Sydney motor shows and was immediately a success with GMH taking orders at both shows. However when these orders were forwarded to Oldsmobile USA the response was less than favourable. Apparently Oldsmobile had been inundated with orders for Coupes in both Canada and the USA and could not fullfill any overseas orders due to lack of capacity. This vehicle under instructions from USA was to be hidden and not used for sales promotion anywhere in Australia. The exact location of this vehicle is somewhat lost between 1946 and 1990's. It was located in Kyneton in Victoria where it had been placed in the back of Kyneton GMH dealership. It was extracted by Doug___ from Warrandyte, removed from the blackberries and undergrowth and taken for restoration. Progress was slow and it was sold to the museum fully restored by Mr Rob Treen Glassy Spur Victoria. BY THE time the FJ Holden was replaced with the FE in July 1956, Australia’s own had taken many steps forward. The six-volt electrics were replaced with a 12-volt set-up, the two-piece windscreen was replaced with a single curved item and the skinny 15in rims were replaced with 13x4.5 steelies. Unlike the FX-FJ, the FE was designed locally by an Australian team. The resulting car was much sleeker than the earlier models, being two inches longer in the wheelbase, four inches longer overall and slightly heavier than its predecessor. To compensate, the 132ci grey motor was blessed with another small dose of horsepower thanks to larger valves and improved cylinder heads. Other mechanical improvements included pendulum-style brake and clutch pedals, hydraulic clutch actuation, larger brake drums and recirculating ball (rather than worm and sector) steering. Other great leaps forward included optional heater, indicators, reversing lights, windscreen washers and demister. The FB was promoted as being longer, lower, more spacious and more powerful than the FC model, but in reality it was only slightly so on each count overerall length was 5.5 inches (140 mm) greater, although the wheelbase remained the same. The engine bore was still 3 inches (76 mm), the last model with that specification. Engine capacity was 138 cubic inches (2.16 L) but the compression ratio was raised. However, the resulting extra 4 brake horsepower (3 kW) of power did not compensate for the greater weight of the FB, so performance was inferior to that of its predecessor. Changes were also made to the brakes, front coil springs, air cleaner and clutch. Obvious styling differences were the lower bonnet, finned rear mudguards with new taillights (on the sedans and wagons only) and a wrap-around windscreen. Seating was improved, as was the instrument panel. A refinement of the FC model but appearance significantly changed with a wraparound windscreen, lower bonnet and finned rear guards.. The EK was the first model Holden that had the option of automatic transmission. This was the 3 speed hydra-matic that offered performance and economy that was not far short of the manual. This vehicle still used the tried and true 138 cubic inch power plant.This was a local Trafalgar vehicle formerly owned by Graham Cook and family. Their polished wood finish appears to be original to their date of manufacture during the 1960s‐70s. They were located in the head keeper’s and assistant keepers’ quarters, where their use for office purposes also may have crossed over to a domestic function. In the post‐war years the Commonwealth Lighthouse Service (CLS) introduced modern, low‐cost furnishings to lightstations. Most notably, it commissioned a number of light, compact and functional items in bulk from émigré designer, Steven Kalmar (1909‐ 1989), who played a significant role in popularising modernist design concepts in Australia and drew his ideas from Scandinavian and American design trends. Born in Hungary, he trained as an architect and his contemporary affordable furnishings were especially suitable for the open‐plan houses being built in Australia’s new post‐war suburbs. It is not known whether the bookcases bear the Kalmar label, but the design, particularly the legs and bar bracing, is a signature style that is associated with his Sydney‐based firm, Kalmar Interiors. The CLS supplied the same bookshelves to a number of other lightstations, including Point Hicks, Cape Otway and Gabo Island, as well as other types of furnishings such as tables and cabinets. The bookcases have first level contributory significance as examples of the modernist furnishings that the Sydney‐based firm, Kalmar Interiors supplied to the Commonwealth Lighthouse Service in the post‐war years.The bookcases stand at about bench level and are almost square in dimension. They have two adjustable shelves as well as the base shelf and stand on legs supported by a single stretcher with a polished wood finish.
