Pamphlet - SOUVENIR PROGRAM, SOLDIERS MEMORIAL INSTITUTE 2018, City of Greater Bendigo, C. Nov 2018
When the SMI was opened in Nov 1921 the Bendigo RSL Sub - Branch had occupancy from that day on. The Building became a Museum opened to the public in 1998 by the RSL. The origins of this project goes back to 2011 with a letter to the City of Greater Bendigo of the possibility of an upgrade to the SMI from the Bendigo District RSL Sub - Branch Inc. Some renovations had already taken place and some structural work. After initial talks a sub - committee of 3 persons from the RSL was elected to work with the Council along with other bodies who would be involved. Plans eventuated by 2015 and were put to the RSL for approval. From there the fund raising began from the State/Federal Govt's, RSL, the Public and Council itself. This was achieved and finally in Sept 2016 the SMI/Museum was packed up completely and the Renovations began in 2017. Souvenir program, card yellow colour folding, front page is in gold and black writing with an image of the Dome on the SMI followed by in gold, "Bendigo Soldiers Memorial Institute Revitalisation Project" then in gold, "Souvenir Program", in the centre has details re time, date, place. Album, John Chapman, A Photographic History of Auburn Heights Recreation Club / by John Chapman, c.1988
Sports Clubs in Kew in the final decades of the 19th century and in the early 20th century were often umbrella organisations with facilities for a number of sports. Typically in Kew, this included teams in lawn bowls, tennis and croquet. The Kew Bowling Club was formed in 1880 while the privately owned Auburn Heights Recreation Club was opened in 1904. By 1998, the two Clubs decided to amalgamate at the Auburn Heights site in Barkers Road, forming the Kew Heights Sports Club. The combined club was itself taken over by the Melbourne Cricket Club in 2012 becoming MCC Kew Sports Club. In 2017 MCC Kew closed and its landholding was subsequently sold to Carey Baptist Grammar School. Both the Kew and Auburn Heights Clubs assembled important collections. These historically significant and large collections were donated to the Society in 2020. The collections include manuscripts, pictures, trophies, plans, honour boards etc. References Barnard FGA 1910, 'Sports and Pastimes' in Jubilee History of Kew Victoria: Its origin & progress 1803-1910. Reeve S 2012, City of Boroondara: Thematic Environmental History, p.216.The combined collections of the four sporting clubs making up the collection number hundreds of items that are historically significant locally. They are also significant to the sporting history of the greater Melbourne area and to the sports of lawn bowls and tennis in Australia in the 19th and 20th centuries. The collection illuminates two of the Victorian historic themes - 'Building community life' through forming community organisations and 'Shaping cultural and creative life' by participating in sport and recreation. An important photographic history of the Auburn Heights Recreation Club 1904-88, compiled by and presented to the Club by John Chapman, 25 May 1989. Photograph - Photogrammetric Equipment – Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo and School of Military Survey Bonegilla, c1960s to c1980s
This is a set of 14 photographs of RA Svy technicians operating photogrammetric equipment in Air Survey Squadron, Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo; and the School of Military Survey Bonegilla c1960s to c1980s. The Wild B9 stereo plotter were introduced in 1962 and the Wild B8 stereo plotter was introduced in 1966. The Wild B9 and B8 stereo plotters were used for plotting topographic detail and contours. These analogue machines were manually controlled by adjusting the control knobs for the orientation of the 3D image. The B9s used a four and a half square, and the B8s used a nine-inch square photo image on a film or glass diapositive which allowed highly accurate extraction of map features. At first, plotting with B8 and B9 stereo plotters was undertaken at the aerial photography scale of 1:80,000 in pencil onto a controlled plotting sheet. Sheets were then inked up and reduced photographically to the 1: 100,000 publication scale for scribe impression production. In the early days topographic detail and contours were plotted with a pencil or ink pen mounted at the far end of the pantograph arm. The plotting procedure was upgraded to direct plotting in ink with photographic reduction to publication scale. In 1975 four B8s were upgraded with tri-axis locaters as part of the Input Sub-system to enable digital extraction to AUTOMAP 1’s topographic database. When AUTOMAP 2 was introduced in 1982 these B8s were upgraded, and additional machines added to expand the Army Survey Regiment’s digital capture capability. There are several more photos catalogued in the Victorian Collections database of RA Svy personnel operating Wild B9 and B8 stereo plotters.Photogrammetric Equipment – Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo c.1981. . .7) – Unidentified technician operating Wild B8 stereo plotter in AUTOMAP 1 at ASR. .8) - Wild B8 stereo plotter in AUTOMAP 1 at ASR. This collection of nine photos was most likely taken in Lithographic Squadron, Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo, c1970s to 1980s. The two Ultra-MAN-III Printing Presses were made in Germany at a standard map size format and introduced in June 1962 as a two-colour offset press with improved safety features. With an upgrade to a third colour deck in 1968, productivity greatly improved as the two presses could print a five-colour standard topographic map in two passes, rather than the three passes before their upgrade. They were replaced with a single Heidelberg Speedmaster 102 five colour Printing Press in 1990. There is more information on the Ultra-MAN-III, Printing Press on page 71 of Valerie Lovejoy’s book 'Mapmakers of Fortuna – A history of the Army Survey Regiment’ ISBN: 0-646-42120-4. For additional photos, refer to item 6065.10P for Ultra-MAN-III presses. The Krause Wohlenberg in photo .5P was a heavy-duty guillotine to trim bulk printed map stock in the c1970s and c1980s. See item 6069.6P for more information and photos of guillotine equipment. Densitometer readings as shown in photo .6P were essential to the quality control of film and printing processes, reductions in time taken and material wastage. This is a set of nine photographs of Print Troop personnel and equipment from Lithographic Squadron at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo, c1970s to 1980s. Photograph - Retouching Reproduction Material at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo, c1975
This is a set of seven photographs of technicians retouching orthophoto reproduction material at the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo, c1975. Retouching mainly entailed the application of liquid opaque (Plumtree), commonly known as “duff” to cover blemishes such as scratches and spots on film negatives before photographic exposure. Retouching technicians also used specialised techniques such as “needling” to repair faults on the emulsion of map reproduction material. The technicians in this set of photos were probably working on the retouching and registration of orthophotomap colour film separations in preparation for publication by Print Troop. Peter Dew featuring in photos .1P to .5P was a serving member of RA Svy, who died in a tragic accident at home. He was fondly remembered as one of Lithographic Squadron’s colourful personalities. The "Super Animal of the Year" Peter Dew Memorial Award was an award presented to a member of the squadron for a crude act. Photograph - WRAAC Personnel posted to the Army Headquarters Survey Regiment, Fortuna Bendigo, c1950s – 1960s
This is a collection of seven photographs of Women’s Royal Australian Army Corps (WRAAC) personnel posted to the Army Headquarters Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo circa 1957 to 1964. After the disbandment of the Australian Women's Army Service (AWAS) in 1947 there was only one or two of civilian women in administrative positions at Fortuna. In February 1957 female positions from the disbanded Southern Command Field Survey Section in Melbourne were transferred to newly established positions at the Army Headquarters Survey Regiment, Bendigo. They were accommodated at the newly acquired ‘Turriff’ mansion in Carpenter Street, Bendigo. Their first Officer Commanding (OC) was CAPT Beryl Perry from 1957 to September 1960. Her replacement as OC was CAPT Carol Castor who served in several positions up to June 1967. The main areas of employment in these early days were in administrative positions, draughting in and retouching in Lithographic Squadron. WO2 MA McLaren was the female to reach the rank of WO2 as a Cartographic Squadron section commander in June 1961. WO1 Marj Knight served at Fortuna from 1959 to 1978 was the first female to reach the rank of WO1. WO1 Knight served in the senior Squadron Sergeant-Major and Technical Warrant Officer positions of Cartographic Squadron. She was also the first female PMC of the Army Survey Regiment SGT’s Mess. The WRAAC uniform seen in this collection was replaced in 1979. As the Australian Army implemented the disbandment of the WRAAC as a separate corps in 1980, WRAAC personnel posted to Royal Australian Survey Corps units were integrated into RA Svy.This is a collection of seven photographs of Women’s Royal Australian Army Corps (WRAAC) personnel posted to the Army Headquarters Survey Regiment, Fortuna Bendigo circa 1957 to 1964. Photograph - Stereoscopic Equipment – Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo
This is a set of six photographs of stereoscopic equipment and personnel at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo, c1950s to c1960s. The stereoscopes shown in photos .1P and .2P were used to stereoscopically view and interpret features in overlapping aerial photographs. The stereoscopic plotters shown in photos .3P and .4P were used to stereoscopically plot topographic detail from overlapping aerial photographs using a pantograph arm with pencil onto a controlled plotting sheet. The Ryker Model PL-3 Wernstedt-Mahan type stereoscopic plotter shown in photos .5P and .6P was used for precision contouring, planimetry and profiling. It was a comparatively simple stereoscopic mapping instrument designed to use ordinary contact prints of aerial photographs. It provides for plotting on a constant scale and approximate tilt correction but does not provide refinements such as correction for lens distortion. The plotter in Photo .6P does not have its pantograph arm attached. These plotters pre-date the Wild B9 and B8 stereo plotters introduced in the 1960s.This is a set of six photographs of stereoscopic equipment and personnel at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo, c1950s to c1960s. These five photographs of map production and the car park area were taken at Fortuna, Bendigo, c1980s. The first three photographs were taken in Air Survey Squadron, where aerotriangulation and digital photogrammetric extraction of topographic features from aerial photography were undertaken. Photo .4P was taken in Cartographic Squadron’s Correcting Section, located in the Attic. The technicians were probably involved in a rapid response map production, as they all were wearing field uniforms. The Army Survey Regiment’s Duty Room, RAP and Carpark appear in Photo .5P. It was probably taken from the top steps near the SGT’s accommodation block in 1986. Photos .4P and .5P are also published with item 6395.17P.This is a set of five photograph of Map Production and car park, at the Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna, Bendigo, c1980s. Photograph - Army Survey Regiment’s Rifle Shooting Team, Fortuna, Bendigo, c1979
This set of 10 photographs of the Army Survey Regiment’s victorious rifle shooting team was taken outside the Tavern at Fortuna, Bendigo in c1979. The rifle shooting competition was the ‘Irwin Trophy for Shooting’, a contest with the British Army’s 42nd Engineer Regiment, the equivalent military geographic mapping unit at the time to the Army Survey Regiment. The bent .303 rifle seen in photo .3P was retrieved from the bottom of Fortuna’s lake when it was drained for restoration. It is believed an excavator drove over the rifle before it was retrieved. This set of 10 photographs of the Army Survey Regiment’s rifle shooting team was taken at Fortuna, Bendigo in c1979. The photographs were printed on photographic paper and are part of the Army Survey Regiment’s Collection. The 35mm positive photographic proofs were scanned at 600 dpi.
