The Forests Commission and its successors continuously encouraged bushfire research and innovation. In 1946 a large parcel of industrial land was purchased at North Altona as a fire cache and workshop. The Altona workshop became a hotbed of new technological innovation… an exhilarating place where lots of things were invented and tested. In fact, a lot of Australia’s pioneering equipment development was led by staff from Altona, often in collaboration with other State forestry and fire authorities. The CSIRO also contributed significantly. The US Forest Service, the US Bureau of Land Management and US State agencies such as the California Department of Forestry and Fire (CalFire) as well as the Canadian Forest Service faced similar challenges and proved strong and willing partners in sharing knowledge, ideas, equipment and expertise over many decades. 8375a: The Victorian soldier settlement scheme created in 1917 to lease farming land to soldiers and nurses returning from WW1. The Scheme was heavily criticised. Some reasons for this were the settlers' lack of capital, the size of the land allocated, and the prices of agricultural products both purchased and sold by the farmers. In the wake of WW2, the soldier settlement scheme was refined and, under the supervision of the Soldier Settlement Commission, was re-established. The Yarraberb Settlement was one of the settlements established in 1948. 8375b: Archibald Edmund "Archie" Robertson was born in Eaglehawk in 1884 to Martin Robertson and Anna Margaretha/Hannah Marguerita (nee. Weseloh/Wesloah). Robertson was a commissioned officer during WW1 and contributed to the welfare and advancement of the California Gully community. Following his death in 1922, following a fall from his bike, the community honoured Robertson with a memorial seat in 1923. Extract: 'Bendigo the City Built on Gold, more than 22 million ounces of it. In only two years and three months, after gold was first found in the spring of 1851 at a spot called 'The Rocks' in Golden Square, over one million ounces oif gold had been won, nearly 662,000 oz of it in 1853. This was the home of 3 generations of the Coop family: 1. Josephine and George Frank Coop (noted in Box Hill Rate Books for 1947-1954). 2. George Burton Coop (1906-1960) and his family. He was Assistant Chief Architect of Victoria in the Public Works Department (P.W.D.) George Burton Coop was born in c1906 in Williamstown, the son of Josephine Vistarini and George Frank Coop. He married Winifred Alice Trewartha in 1936 and they are listed in the electoral rolls at 688 Whitehorse Road in 1937. George died 3/4/1960, aged 54 years at Mont Albert. 3. George Burton and Alice Coop had 2 children: George Lister Coop - born St Georges Hospital, 8/10/1937 Alison - born c1945. The donor George Lister Coop informed that he initially attended Chatham State School because his first home was the Spanish Mission style flats at 346 Whitehorse Road, opposite Brenbeal Street, Balwyn. When his grandparents died, the family moved to 688 Whitehorse Road and he then attended Mont Albert Central School. The California bungalow style of housing was the dominant style of housing built in the interwar period through the northern parts of Surrey Hills and Mont Albert as formerly semi-rural land was subdivided for new housing. It was relatively inexpensive and affordable. In Australia the Californian bungalow drew upon elements that were popular across the United States from around 1910 to 1939. In Australia the style became popular from 1913. In Melbourne both timber and red brick were used as the main building material. Typically they are one or one and a half story houses and feature sloping roofs and eaves with unenclosed rafters and often a feature a dormer window (or an attic vent designed to look like one) over the main portion of the house. Decorative elements include wood shingles, part stucco rendered exteriors, brick, stone, rendered or a combination of these treatments to exterior chimneys and front porches supported by heavy timber, brick or stucco columns.A sepia photo taken at an angle from the street corner of the property. The "letters to Lillie" show the international nature of the Mission to Seafarers. They are an important display of the handwriting style of the time, revealing courting attempts and give us an insight into life in 1925 and 1926.Lillie Duncan was a member of the Harbour Lights Guild and this letter forms part of a collection of letters sent to her by different seafarers.Letter addressed to Miss Lillian Duncan, 11 Paxton Street, East Malvern, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia from J. Kokx, U.S.S. Medusa, c/o PM San Francisco, 5th Div. Calif consisting of two parts. 0073.1 Envelope; 0073.2 Letter (double-sided). Both the envelope and the letter are cream in colour. The letter begins with "My Dearest Melbourne Girl: I recieved your...". The letter has a ships seal printed and embossed onto it in blue ink.The envelope has been torn across the top horizontally in order to retrieve the letter from inside. The flap on the back is still sealed. The envelope has three sets of stamps. The first is a circular black ink stamp with the text "SAN PEDRO Feb 1 [indecipherable] 1926 CALIF". The second stamp is a set of three red almost square stamps reading "UNITED STATES POSTAGE 2 CENTS". The last stamp is in black ink and has 7 curved lines resembling the waves of the sea which continues over to the back of the envelope where it stops curving. Wootton Lansell was a sailor born in Kent, England in 1825. after travelling to Nova Scotia and the Californian goldfields, Wootton arrived in Australia in 1850. For 18 months he worked as a mounted trooper in Adelaide before coming to Bendigo in 1850. He also spent time on the Ovens goldfields before returning to Adelaide for three months. He returned to Bendigo in 1854 and had some success in his hunt for gold before working as a carpenter. In 1854 he married Helen Hall He invited his brothers, George and William to join him in Bendigo and they initially set up a butchery, soap and candlemakers business in View point. George went on to become the "King of Quartz Mining'. Wootton eventually became a farmer at Leichardt, where he built "Myrtle Villa", but retained his interest in mining becoming a director of many mining and dredging companies. Robert WYNNE (1959- ) Born Yarram, Victoria Robert Wynne studied a Diploma of Visual Arts at the Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education (now Federation University) from 1977 to 1979, and a Graduate Diploma of Visual Arts in 1981 majoring in Ceramics. During his final year he met visiting glass artist, Nick Mount, who had recently established a studio within Monash University. Robert was captivated by glass blowing and worked with Mount in those heady, pioneering days and carries with him many of the lessons he learned from Nick. Rob Wynne completed a Masters Degree in Glass at the California State University and visited private glass studios in the USA. In 1991 he established his own studio, Denizen Glass Design at Manly, New South Wales, where he produces a range of hand-blown glass including smaller production work and large, one-off sculptural pieces. This is one of those fourteen images. Of French or Belgian origin and possibly formerly an assayer in California, Marchand appears to have begun his practice of photography in Tarnagulla around 1865 as an assistant to A.B. Clay. By the following year he had settled in Portland, where he opened the Royal Photographic Studio in Gawler Street. From his base in Portland he toured surrounding districts, offering portrait and view services. Little else is known about his life. He appears to have left Australia in 1878. A misprint of his name in a local directory as Annie Marchand created the misconception that he was one of only a few named women photographers in the colonies.

A critique of the adaption of American culture in Australian popular culture, where only the worst or silliest things from the US are adopted. Boyd suggests the colonial, unambitious and rigid brand of masculinity that characterises the "Aussie myth" hinders the development of an imaginative and creative social climate that manifests in a superficial appropriation of American culture. Boyd is not critical of US culture itself, in fact he has a great appreciation of US culture. He suggests that the Australian brand of Americanisation is only a superficial commercial exploitation of the American dream. Stephens, Brother Batten Perrow, three brothers Speedy, five Brothers Richards, Phillips and Robertson. The Archie Robertson memorial seat is still in the Gully near the site of the old lodge room. Murray Comrie Collection. Copy of an 1866 photograph by Aimé Marchand. Thomas Comrie's Exchange Store was at south end of Commercial Road, it has since been destroyed. In June 1866, Aimé Marchand (1846-1910) made a series of fourteen photographs which were submitted to the 1866-67 Melbourne Intercolonial Exhibition, where they earned a 1st Class Honorable Mention. This is one of those fourteen images. Of French or Belgian origin and possibly formerly an assayer in California, Marchand appears to have begun his practice of photography in Tarnagulla around 1865 as an assistant to A.B. Clay. By the following year he had settled in Portland, where he opened the Royal Photographic Studio in Gawler Street. From his base in Portland he toured surrounding districts, offering portrait and view services. Little else is known about his life. He appears to have left Australia in 1878. A misprint of his name in a local directory as Annie Marchand created the misconception that he was one of only a few named women photographers in the colonies. Biscuit tin: late 19th century Swallow & Ariell operated continuously in Port Melbourne from 1858 to 1991. The former Swallow & Ariell’s factory buildings, now The Anchorage, continue to add interest and pleasure along Stokes, Rouse and Princes Streets. Thomas Swallow, born in Reading, travelled to California and Ballarat before setting up a business making ships biscuits in Port Melbourne. His business partner Ariell died in 1877. He then went into partnership with Frederick Derham, his son in law. Company farms around Shepparton provided much of its wheat, and after 1889 most was ground into flour on the Port Melbourne premises. For the year ending 1 May 1920, the factory used 51 tons of butter, 2,740 eggs and produced more than 66 lines of biscuits. They also made puddings, elaborate cakes and ice cream. S & A was a significant employer – locally referred to as S & A College. At the height of the South African war it employed 1900 workers but even in 1991 it employed 450 people.Pink and brown clover-shaped ornamental biscuit tin decorated with pictures of a girl (central panel), 2 dogs (lower section), 2 rabbits (upper left-side panel) and 2 birds (upper right-hand panel.
