In 1909, assistant Chaplain Rev. Haire presented the Mission with an 'uncommonly artistic pulpit' in memory of his mother. A plaque in memory of Jane King Haire can be found on the side next to the steps. The dedication was performed by the Archbishop of Melbourne on the 26th January (date engraves on the plaque) This pulpit was designed by Melbourne architect Rodney Howard Alsop (1881-1932) and manufactured by William John Dalziel (furniture manufacturer). It was initially used in the first Mission in Central Melbourne, Siddeley St. It is located in the Chapel of Saint Peter of the Mission to Seafarers 717 Flinders St. complex since 1917 (State Heritage listed (H1496). This complex was designed by Walter Richmond Butler in 1916, and officially opened on 11 September 1917, a day '...of unusually kind weather', by the Governor of Victoria, the Honourable Sir Arthur Stanley. According to a later article published in 1950: The pulpit is a model, built to scale, of the stern of an old ship of the line in Lord Nelson's day. This pulpit is significant as it is housed in The Memorial Chapel of Saint Peter forming part of the State Heritage listed Mission to Seafarers Victoria complex. It was built in Melbourne of Australian timbers, and is one of only two known maritime inspired pulpits, both associated with Missions to Seamen of the early 20th C. the other is held in the ANMM Collection see link. Their statement of significance is worth quoting in part as it applies equally to this pulpit "...an extremely rare and unique example of such pulpits. It is highly significant as a wonderfully preserved example of a time when religion was preached to sailors for their spiritual guidance and temperance..." Rodney Howard Alsop was an important Melbourne architect of the Arts and Crafts movement. John William Dalziel had sailed from Liverpool to Melbourne in 1862. Seventeen years later Penman and Dalziel founded the business in Lonsdale Street West, and won recognition at the Indian and Colonial Exhibition in London in 1886. Penman and Dalziel were identified in 1937 as one of Melbourne’s early ‘skilled craftsmen’ and ‘leading names’ in the manufacture of fine furniture. He died in February 1918 in a railway accident.Timber pulpit built in the form of a ship's stern including a timber step ladder for access, a timber keel and rudder, a rope fixed from the pulpit to a post mounted to the floor, and a dedication plaque on the side of the pulpit. The pulpit sits on timber legs. It's likely to be the original rope: traditionally made coir rope with twisted fibres, covered with canvas supported by a thread. This book belonged to Fletcher Jones and was later part of the library at the Fletcher Jones Factory Complex in Warrnambool. Fletcher Jones was a prominent Warrnambool businessman who established a men’s clothing shop in Warrnambool in the 1920s and a factory in Warrnambool in the 1940s. He extended this business Australia-wide and later included women’s clothing. He was noted for his philanthropy and for his interest in co-operative management and the participation of staff in the ownership of the business. This book is significant because it reflects the personal philosophies of Fletcher Jones who was a prominent Warrnambool businessman who advocated the participation of staff in the ownership of businesses. The Fletcher Jones business was important in Australia for over 50 years and played a key part in the economic development of Warrnambool in the second half of the 20th century as the city’s largest manufacturing business. Fletcher Jones was a significant person in Warrnambool in the 20th century. This is a hard cover book of 114 pages. It has nine chapters and a bibliography. The cover is red with gold and black lettering and part of the title embedded into the cover. There is a stamp of the Fletcher Jones business and an embossed one of Fletcher Jones’ home address. The new Warrnambool Methodist Church was opened on 1st April 1939. The Church complex was designed by Messrs A.S. and R.A. Eggleston and built by J.D.E. and T. Walter. Along with the pulpit, this Altar was designed by architect Rodney Howard Alsop (1881-1932) (Annual report 1908). It was originally made for the Siddeley Street Institute, which was built in 1907 on a block of land leased from the Melbourne Harbour Trust and donated by Mrs Amelia Shuter (nee Lord) (see Annual Report 1907). The altar is photographed in an early picture of the Siddeley Mission in a room used as chapel before the chapel built in 1909. Although a 21 year lease for the site had been granted, a notice was delivered to the Mission to quit the site in 1912. In 1915, the present site was agreed on. The Altar sits within the Chapel of Saint Peter, which belongs to the State Heritage listed (H1496) Mission to Seafarers Victoria complex. This complex was designed by Walter Richmond Butler in 1916, and officially opened on 11 September 1917. On the right hand side of the altar, is a brass plaque in memory of Charles Shuter, a colonist and police magistrate who died in 1902. The plaque was made in 1907.The Altar is significant because it is located within the Memorial Chapel of Saint Peter, forming part of the State Heritage listed Mission to Seafarers Victoria complex. Mt Calvin, the homestead of Jeanie and Willie Richardson can be clearly seen in the clearing above the men in the picture. The white roof of the Barber homestead is on the right of the picture. A landslide in 1934 destroyed the tree ferned area. The building in the photograph is the Boiler House which was part of the former Sunbury Asylum. It was built in the 1920s to replace an older boiler. Coal and/or briquettes were burned to produce hot water and steam which was used to heat and supply hot water for the Asylum buildings. Steam attendants monitored and maintained the furnace and boiler seven days a week. It ceased production in October 1992 and since then has served as an Arts and Cultural complex for the local community. The core memory of this calculator was a #D metal box. The pin must have been attached to a card reader or keyboard to enter the programme. According to Sharp’s serial numbering scheme, which encodes the month and year of manufacture of their electronic calculators at least through the mid-1970’s, this calculator was manufactured in September 1969. The technology used in the Memorizer 30/Memorizer 60 was very typical of that of the late 1960s, with small-scale integrated circuits containing a few gates or flip-flops, and a magnetic core memory array for storing the program steps that the user keyed in using the calculator attached to the device. This book could be described as the summing up of a theory of physical appearances, devised by a painter and demonstrated by paint. The foundation of this theory was laid down first in Paris by Max Meldrum early 1900s. A review calls the book "the most outstanding book on the craft of painting yet published in any language. Max Meldrum was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on 03 December 1875. His family arrived in Australia and Max Meldrum attended the National Gallery School, winning the Victorian Travelling Scholarship in 1899. It was deaccessioned and transferred from the Ballarat School of Mines library so would have been used by students and staff of the Ballarat Technical Art School, a division of the Ballarat School of Mines. Later in his life, he used these skills extensively when he worked as a patternmaker for a plastering company. Bertie worked through his seventies, retiring when he lost a finger. Red Rock, Alvie, near Colac, is a complex of approximately 30 volcanic eruption points and is the Southern most of a chain of three volcanoes, the others being Warrion Hill and Alvie Hill. It is arguably the youngest eruption point in Victoria at around 8000 years, especially since the age of Mt Napier has been progressively pushed back. The highest point (on the Northern side) has many interesting features, including some awesome spatter ramparts. Driving around the rim to the south, you can also see layered tuff. There are some good views out to Lake Corangamite and the lava flows (probably from Warrion Hill) can be seen where they have entered the lake. Most of Red Rock is in private land, with two lookout points with some interpretive information. The water depicted in this photograph is not evident in 2019.
