Pedal Clubs began in the late 1950's to encourage safety, to stimulate interest in getting out into nature, to teach owners how to look after their bikes; to provide to young and old opportunities for healthy recreation; to provide enjoyment and fellowship for all lovers of the open spaces and to develop greater skills in cycling. From the 1970's onwards the clubs developed competitions to encourage safe bike handling and skills. These clubs generally relied on parents to run the competitions for the children in their locations. This motor was purchased from New Zealand (2bx c2008). This motor came with a log book showing it had operated for a total of 1577 hours and was removed from service because it was approaching the deadline of 1600 hours which required it to be overhauled or replaced. No starter motor came with it, so the B-24 Liberator restoration group reconditioned one from stock, After a thorough health check, and basic adjustments, this engine was first run in May 2009 and has been cycled through regular engine run schedule ever since.The Pratt & Whitney R 1830 is a double row 14 cylinder air cooled radial engine with a capacity of 1830 cubic inches, (30 litres), developing some 1200 horsepower at a maximum 2700 rpm.Engine Number 490571 -

One of the toll bags used to collect tolls on the Great Ocean Road. First "Toll Gate" at Sunnymeade Estate as the road went through land owned by Mr C J Lane. Toll gates followed at "Stradbroke Point",later changed to "Stradbroke Knoll" named after the Govenor of Victoria, Lord Stradbroke, Grassy Creek and "The Springs". Mr W D McKay first toll keeper, then Mr & Mrs Wright. Toll commenced circa 1925 and ended 2nd October 1936. Cars were charged at 2/6 for car and driver and 1/- for each passenger. Motor cycles 2/-. Brown leather bag, with adjustable shoulder strap for carrying. Functional object - car lantern, Joseph Lucas Ltd. Birmingham, England, Lucas King of the Road Lantern, c.1930
This lantern or lamp was used for lighting an automobile or motor cycle in the 1920s or 1930s. It could also have been used in a household or carried by a person. It was made by the English firm of Joseph Lucas Ltd., a business founded in 1860 which originally made scoops, buckets and plant holders. In 1875 it began the production of lamps and in the early 20th century made automotive components. Today after having merged with a North American company it makes components for the automotive and aerospace industries. The term 'King of the Road' was reserved for products that were regarded as the most prestigious and the ones commanding the highest price. This lamp was advertised as one that 'will not blow out in the toughest gale'.This item is retained as an interesting example of the lighting used for cars and bicycles early in the 20th century.This is a metal lantern which is much rusted but which may have been chrome or nickel plated. Heather Pitman studied at the School of Mines and Ballarat College of Advanced Education and was awarded the Civil Engineering Scholarship in 1977. Heather broke down barriers in engineering with an integrity that earned her tremendous respect in the sector and led to her becoming the first female Head of Engineering for the City of Ballarat. She was the first of a new breed of engineers to consider the urban water cycle in its entirety and not in isolated parts, a radical approach at the time. In her honour, the Pitman Benjamin Engineering Prize was founded, to recognise students like Heather, who have chosen not to accept the status quo, but instead to change the world to make it better for all. A meeting was held on 18th August 1947 at the East Sunshine Community Hall with the aim of forming a motor cycle club. The name BRAYBROOK MOTOR CYCLE CLUB was decided upon "as it would cater for riders and non-riding members in all surrounding districts". The first President was Don Minahan with Bert Watson as Secretary. They had been members of the Auto Cycle Union whose members became dissatisfied with the prize money awarded, so the Victorian Motorcycle Association (VMCA) was formed. The President of the VMCA (Mr. A. Clarke) attended the meeting on 3rd September 1947 which was held in the Hall behind the Sunshine Theatre. This became the regular meeting place. The new Braybrook Club affiliated with the VMCA joining clubs from Altona, Coburg, Essendon, Newport and Preston. Membership mostly came from recreational motor bike riders looking for more structured competitive riding experience and enjoyment. The club conducted its events on Sunday afternoons and as sport at that time was not permitted on Sundays, they overcame that obstacle by seeking a silver coin donation (pointing out that "two bob" was expected). The events were mainly dirt scrambles over open land which today is known as "off road". The favourite sites were Sunshine's ample open spaces such as Glengala Road and McIntyre Road, as well as Arundell Road (Keilor) and Laverton. For track racing experience the club formed a very basic dirt track on the open land in Glengala Road west of the original Sunshine Golf Club, which was very popular on Sunday afternoons for both riders and spectators. In the early 1950's Motorbike and Sidecar races were also witnessed on some Sundays, on a track near the corner of McIntyre and Furlong Roads, North Sunshine. During 1950 the Braybrook members voted in favour of allowing the Sunshine Club to amalgamate with them and form the BRAYBROOK AND DISTRICT MOTORCYCLE CLUB. The merger took place at the meeting on 10th July 1950 when office bearers were elected. The club disbanded in the mid 1960's due to the massive residential development occurring in the Sunshine district, and so activities were merged with the Newport Club. The above information is mainly compiled from Sunshine Advocate articles published on 29/8/47, 12/9/47, and 30/6/50, and from written details supplied by Mr. J. N. Willaton. Further details or corrections from interested readers are welcome.The Braybrook and District Motorcycle Club has not existed in its own right for several decades. John Cecil Burton and his brother Cecil Hubert formed The Leicester Rubber Company in 1906, to sell imported cycle tyres. The Company's patriotic 'John Bull' trade mark came into force a few years later in 1908. In 1915 the Rubber Company started to manufacture its own bicycle and pram tyres at its Evington Valley Road site in Leicester, and in 1928 they started to mass produce car and motorcycle tyres at the site. The name was changed to the John Bull Rubber Company in 1934, and in 1937 an associated company was formed to manufacture rubber to metal components - Metalastic. From an article in The Answer newsletter December 1996 these veteran cyclists were part of Veterans' Health week which is an awareness campaign from the Department of Veterans' Affairs. The cyclists were Jack Griffin (72) and Eric Doherty (76), who had recently completed their round Australia cycling expedition. The article says: "Reception at Legacy House for Veteran Cyclists There was a big media roll up at Legacy House Melbourne recently to cover the finish of a marathon bike ride around Australia by two very fit veterans. Legatee President Ray Ward and Veterans' Affairs Deputy Commissioner Brian Flynn were on hand to congratulate them." Set of 3 Black and white negatives by Wal Jack, of T 177: .1 - at Elsternwick, Glenhuntly Road. Note the tram does not have a white bumper and apron or a head light shade. There is a W2 class tram behind. In the background are buildings for Apps & Sons Undertakers, James Smith Station Estate Agency, Penfolds, a hair salon, a Shell service station which has motor cycle sales. .2 - The tram at {Point Ormond terminus, with the crew chatting. Braun was originally founded in Germany in 1921, making components for radio sets. After World War 2 they extended their range to include audio and camera equipment. By the 1950s and 1960s the company branched out into electric shavers, kitchen appliances and hair care products. Home hair styling sets and hot rollers became popular in the 1960s and continued to be an important woman's styling appliance throughout the 1970s and 1980s. In 1975 this product was advertised at a price of $37.95. From 1984 until 2007, Braun was a wholly owned subsidiary of Gillette, which had purchased a controlling interest in the company in 1967. Braun is now a subsidiary of Procter & Gamble, which acquired Gillette in 2005.Personal grooming items such as this became important personal accessories and grooming tools for women throughout the mid 20th century across Australia.This hair styler set contains 20 hair rollers which were heated by placing them on the 20 heating posts fitted inside the unit in the case. An electric cord supplied was attached to an electric socket. A red dot on top of each posts darkened when the rollers were sufficiently heated. A detailed instruction booklet is included. Broadbent's Official Road Guides Company took over George R. Broadbent's business in 1935. In 1963, it changed its name to Broadbent's Road Maps Pty. Ltd. George Robert Broadbent (1863-1947), cyclist and map publisher, was born on 3 November 1863 at Ashby near Geelong, Victoria. At various times Broadbent held most Victorian and Australian road cycling records. Broadbent became an active vice-president of the Good Roads Association of Victoria in November 1912 and was consulted regularly during the preparation of the country roads bill. That year he took over the Argus motoring column, wrote tirelessly on road improvements and maintenance, and became manager of the Automobile Club's new touring department in 1914.A 160 pp road guide book titled Broadbent's Official Road Guide Melbourne - Sydney. The front cover has a yellow background with a map of the coastline from Sydney to Melbourne, the Prince's Highway route marked. This is inset in a drawing of a car driving along the coastal road.The book contains speedometer readings, route maps, advertisements and photos of points of interest. The c1920 brick shop and side dwelling is one of just three early 20th century shop buildings left in Eltham and one of just two that have intact facades. These shops are physical links with the country village of Eltham at that time and their siting in isolated locations along the street reflects that village era. Since the 1950s Eltham's main street has changed dramatically and the intact pre 1940 buildings such as this shop are key components of the section of Main Road south of Henry Street which still has a streetscape recognisable from that earlier time. The side dwelling illustrates the common practice of that time for shopkeepers to live at their premises. In the 1990s this was an antique Shop and in 2010 “Eltham Cycles”.
