Handwritten notes, with typed copy, on the chimneys of some of Bendigo's mines. Some were designed on Cleopatra's Needle which is situated on the Thames Embankment in London. Others had flags, horizontal bands, letters or initials in coloured bricks. The 180 mine stack had a pyramid built on the top with a hole on each side placed there as vents for the smoke which issued from them according to the wind. Today none of these chimneys remain. Document dated 28th April 1865 "All that the amalgamated alluvial claim at Pottery Flat aforesaid registered Number 881 in the Books of the Mining Register for the Mining District of Sandhurst known as the Royal Oak Company's claim." Listed in "The Bendigo goldfield registry" 1872 as Royal Oak Company: Bignell's Reef, Derwent Gully. Capital £24000., in £24,000 20s. shares. Manager, W. Barker. Newspaper articles dating from 11 Jan 1867 refer to the company as "Royal Oak Mining Company". Both names appear to be used interchangeably. This A3 document is made up of 3 pieces of heavy stock lined paper. The document is bound on the left side with glue and string creating a book which comprises the legal contract of mortgage for mining equipment. The document is handwritten in black ink across 4 pages (2 double sided pages) with the last page acting as the documents cover when folded down into a pamphlet. The signature page includes 9 red wax seals. When held up to the light, the cover page and internal page show an indentation reading G. Wilmot 1862. Two copies of document : nineteen handwritten pages of notes on 'The Rich Victoria Hill and Its Historical Association' Signed by A Richardson and dated 30 - 8 - 1971. and a typed copy of same. Notes include: Introduction, Hotels, Mines, Mining History and descriptions of features where the signposts are. Mines mentioned in the text are: North Old Chum. Ballerstedt's first open cut, Lansell's Big 180. 20 head stamper, Lansell's Cleopatra Needle, Victoria Quartz Mine. Cleopatra's Needle was a square sectioned brick chimney with this four sided pyramidal chimney top with four vents to allow the smoke to escape whatever the direction of the wind. It was demolished in the 1950's as it had a bend in it and it was considered unsafe. Lansell had two other mines with similar chimneys, the '222' in Chum Street and his 'Sandhurst' or 'Needle' mine near the Bendigo, Eaglehawk boundary. First part is the objective which is to preserve the mining history and to have exhibits in the places they were used, e.g. quartz mining machinery exhibited in a quartz mining area, not on an alluvial field. The North Johnson Gold Mine was situated in California Gully, Bendigo. Report mentions cage being hung up and rope being caught and stuck, cutting down of shaft, repair of winding rope, cutting down and timbering of shaft, miner burnt when candle flared, which was believed to be caused by gas, sinking of shaft and water heavy and recommend to stop sinking shaft and start to cut a plat. (b) Report dated 29-11-1906 mentions a typhoon destroying the east side of the engine-house. There is a policeman on point duty. In the view are signs for G A Grano Mantle manufacturers, Smiths Pawnbroker, State Savings Bank, MIchaels Camera store, one horse-drawn cart, and motor vehicles. On the west side footpath under an awning is a "Keep to the left" for pedestrians. Flinders St Railway Station can be seen in the far distance. The case has two belt loops attached to the rear with light brown coloured stitching and copper rivets. The case has a long thin leather and small steel buckle adjustable shoulder strap. The shoulder strap is attached to the case by short leather straps, stitched and riveted to the sides and bottom of the case. The lid pivots open to the rear, attached to the case by a leather strap which is stitched and riveted to the case and lid. The lid is secured closed by a short leather strap and brass buckle. The top of the lid has a thin leather carrying handle attached by rivets. The top of the lid has the maker's name and case pattern stamped on the top. Stamped on the lower front is the broad arrow mark.1917 G. Battle & Co H X The top of the lid has the numbers 709 and 49867 written in pencil. A flooring clamp (or cramp) is used for holding tongue and groove floorboards in place whilst laying a new floor. The ratchet handle is used to apply horizontal pressure to hold boards firmly in place until they are secured. “The General and Commercial Directory of the Borough of Birmingham, and six miles round; including Wolverhampton, Bilston, Walsall, West Bromwich” published in 1858 lists William Bissell as an ironmonger in Union Street, Wolverhampton. In the catalogue for the 1862 London Exhibition, three items manufactured by William Bissell were listed, including:- “BISSELL'S PATENT FLOORING CRAMP. The force of this cramp is fully equal to 1 ton. It is adapted to joists from 2 to 4 in. and is the most expeditious and easy in working of any cramp in use.” In the 1864 edition of “Williams's Manufacturers' Directory, for London and Principal Market Towns in England”, page 445, in listings for Wolverhampton, W Bissell is listed as a Patentee of flooring cramps, lifting jacks and proprietor of mortise locks; mortising machines, bench and vertical saw-frames". By 1871 the business was operating as Messrs. J. G. Bissell and Co. and the trademark on this item in our Collection was phased out. This information assists in allocating the provenance of this item to the late 1860s.This item is significant because it is representative of housing construction tools used in the Wodonga District which have evolved into present day tools.A cast iron clamp used to install tongue and groove floorboards. This home was built for the Bennett family in about 1928. It replaced the butcher's shop in Sussex which was run by George Garnsworthy Bennett from 1896. The City of Moorabbin Historical Society was formed c 1960 by a group of Moorabbin residents who were concerned that the history of the area should be preserved. A good response to a call for items related to the historical area of Moorabbin Shire brought donations of a wide variety of artefacts which are now preserved by the current members of CMHS at Box Cottage Museum . Helen Stanley, Secretary of CMHS, began producing a Newsletter for members in April 2007 to provide current information and well researched items of historical interest. Helen Stanley has produced a bi-monthly Newsletter, 2007 - 2013, for the members of the City of Moorabbin Historical Society that contains well researched interesting historical items, notification of upcoming events, current advice from Royal Australian Historical Society , Museums Australia Victoria and activities of Local Historical Societies. Handwritten quote from W. Abraham, Inspl of Mines, Bendigo. He had been at the Great Northern Company's mine when the engine driver was hauling water from the 1.780 feet level, with a tank on one side and a cage on the other, broke the cross-head and two motion-bars; the drums reversed and desecended about 50 feet. The driver applied the air-brakes. The drums were brought a standstill, without any further damage. The Insp. Was in favour of the air -brakes and thought every should be compelled to use them in shafts below 1,000 feet in depth. Also a list of companies who have had these brakes fitted to their winding plants and a list of the companies who intend to fit them.
