photograph, Mr Joseph George of 26 Scheele Street, air raid warden
Mr Joseph George of 26 Scheele Street Pictured as an Air Raid Precautions Officer during the 1939 – 1945 war. ARP officers controlled the areas around their homes to check on tell-tale lights showing in the ‘brownout’ conditions and advising on the black-out of homes. Street lights were dimmed and screened downwards and Joseph’s daughter Marie remembered sewing black Italian cloth curtains to hang over the windows. Joseph taught adult first aid classes in local schools, church halls and at The Surrey Dive. Joseph conducted his practical training sessions at the Quarry in Grovedale Road, in case they had to deal with an emergency in such a site. Joseph (Joe) and wife Emily Ruth were English migrants; they bought their home in Scheele Street in 1919. Daughter Marie was born in 1914 when they are listed in the electoral roll at 'Hasland', Croydon Road, Surrey Hills; his occupation is given as a boilermaker. Emily (nee Sturgess) - d 15 November, 1960; buried Box Hill Cemetery - M-199A-0034 along with daughter Marie. Possible birth c Oct 1880, Birmingham (not confirmed); marriage to Joseph George c Jan 1905, Chesterfield, Derbyshire. The donor was his daughter, Marie, who was a school teacher and was on the staff at Chatham Primary School for a number of years. Book - Novel, H Rider Haggard, author, Heart of The World, 1894
H. Rider Haggard (1856-1925) (Sir H. Rider Haggard), a British author, wrote fiction and non-fiction works and had letters and articles published in newspapers and journals. His novel, Heart of the World, was an adventure set in Mexico. This book is part of the Pattison Collection at Flagstaff Hill. The book was published in 1895 by the British firm George G Harrap & Co. Ltd. of London, a firm that specialised in high-quality publishing with many of the books containing fine line drawings. The book has additional importance for its connection to the Pattison Collection, which, along with other items at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village, was originally part of the Warrnambool Mechanics' Institutes’ Collection. The Warrnambool Mechanics’ Institute book collection has historical and social significance for its strong association with the Mechanics Institute movement and its important role in people's intellectual, cultural and social development throughout the latter part of the nineteenth century and the early twentieth century. The collection of books is a rare example of an early lending library and its significance is enhanced by the survival of an original collection of many volumes. The Warrnambool Mechanics' Institute’s publication collection is of both local and state significance.Heart of The World Author: H Rider Haggard (Sir H. Cup, Jubilee 1887, 1937
This cup was sold as a souvenir of the Coronation of King George VI of England in 1937. It was probably bought locally as devotion to the British Empire was strong in the 1930s. The coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth took place on 12 May 1937 at Westminster Abbey. This followed the abdication of Edward VIII. This cup is retained as an example of the high quality souvenirs of the 1937 Coronation of King George VI sold to those in British Empire countries. It will be useful for display. This is a white china cup with a gilt edge around the top rim and on the handle. On one side of the cup are images of a crown, British flags, photographs of King George and Queen Elizabeth in oval frames and some lettering.‘H.M. King George VI H.M. Booklet - Document, Remembrance Day Silence : Proposed Memorial to Edward George Honey, Australian Journalist. Executives Committee's Report, 1964
An interesting document outlining the evolution of the tradition of pausing in silence for remembrance on 11 November each year. The account outlines how King George V decreed a two minute silence be held at the first anniversary of the Armistice - originally referred to as Peace Day. The events included a letter written by Edward George Honey, an Australian journalist, proposing the idea on 8 May 1919. In it part of it says: "Should not this be the spirit of at least a fragment of our Peace Day? Communion with the Glorious Dead who won us Peace, and from the communion new strength, hope and faith in the morrow, Church services, too, if you will, but in the street, the home, the theatre, anywhere, indeed, where Englishmen and their women chance to be, surely this five minutes of bitter-sweet silence there will be service enough. Before and afterwards, sing and make merry as we will. Of one thing, I am quite certain, and the tis that our songs will take a deeper, truer note after those five minutes of remembrance We will have gathered from them strength for the morrow. God knows we need it!" The document was produced by a committee that was proposing a memorial to Edward Honey to record his role. It was forwarded too H.G. Brain, presumably a Legatee who could bring this information to Legacy's attention. Items were in an envelope with other photos and programmes from different items relating to the Shrine of Remembrance - including discussions on its location and design. Labelled 'Shrine of Remembrance S1 - S14' it was part of an old archive numbering system, that showed there has been efforts in the past to collect, order and save items of Legacy's history. (01181 - 01190, 01206 - 01212).A record of a committee approaching Legacy about a memorial to the man who suggested the adoption of silence as a form of remembrance in 1919. Also there was an effort to record historical events by the "Archive Committee" which collected this and other documents relating to the Shrine together in a file (see items 01181 - 01190, 01206 - 01212)A thirteen page report typed on buff paper in a dark brown card cover, on a proposed memorial to Edward Honey. Badge - Fundraising Button, King George’s Day, 1916
Frances Horace Rigg was a local business identity in Kew, at one stage managing the local branch of the English, Scottish and Australian (ES&A) Bank at 175 High Street from c.1920 until the 1940s. After Francis Rigg’s death, the collection of badges, buttons and medallions was inherited by his son, Ken Rigg (1922-2014). The collection was subsequently donated to the Kew Historical Society by Francis' grandson, Adrian Rigg, at the time of the Gallipoli & Beyond Commemorations of 2015. The collection covers a period of almost 40 years. The majority are fundraising buttons, issued and sold during and immediately after the First World World War (1914-1918) to raise funds for national and overseas causes. The collection also includes a number of locally significant sporting event buttons and sporting club medallions, issued in the 1920s and 1930s.Patriotic and other pressed buttons and badges were produced in large numbers in the first decades of the twentieth century. By nature, insubstantial and ephemeral, they have not always survived. The collections of badges, buttons and medallions in the Kew Historical Society collection is homogenous and yet diverse, ranging from buttons sold to raise funds for the war efforts in 1914-18 and 1939-45, to those used at festivals and sporting events. Because of the manufacturing process, many surviving buttons and badges have been affected by inadequate storage, suffering from oxidisation and physical damage. These survivors are now historically and socially significant artefacts, revealing much about the attitudes and values of the period in which they were produced. Their widespread distribution means that they are frequently significant at a local, state, national and international level.Fundraising badge dating to World War I with an image in the centre of King George V. ‘King George’s Day’ buttons were sold on 2 June 1916, the day before the ‘actual’ celebrations of the monarch’s birthday."King George’s Day"patriotic buttons, first world war (1914-18), george v -
