Tool - Netting Shuttle, Early-to-mid 20th century
Maritime trades included making and mending nets. Netcraft skills have been taught and applied for centuries and are ongoing. Shuttles, or net needles, are used in the netting process, along with twine or cord, and a sharp knife or scissors. The twine is wound onto the shuttle and dispensed as the shuttle knots and weaves the cord to make the net. These shuttles are lightweight, compact and portable too. Nets were used on sailing ships for the crew's safety, often saving the sailor's lives in stormy seas Examples are the ship mast nets or shrouds that are wide at the base on the deck and taper to a point at the top of the mast, and railing nets that encircle the rails around the deck and prevent people and objects from rolling or falling into the sea. The shuttles were donated to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village by the family of Doctor William Roy Angus, Surgeon and Oculist. It is part of the “W.R. Angus Collection” that includes historical medical equipment, surgical instruments and material belonging to Dr Edward Ryan and Dr Thomas Francis Ryan, (both of Nhill, Victoria) and Dr Angus’ own belongings. The Collection’s history spans the medical practices of the two Doctors Ryan, from 1885-1926 plus that of Dr Angus, until 1969. Nets were an essential part of the life-saving safety equipment on sailing vessels. The set of netting shuttles is an example of net-making tools used in the 18th to 20th centuries and continues into modern times to create and repair safety equipment. The shuttles are part of the W.R. Angus Collection, which is significant for still being located at the site it is connected with, Doctor Angus being the last Port Medical Officer in Warrnambool. Badge, Rita Williams (designer), South Western Branch Embroiders Guild, late 20th century
This name badge belonged to Rosemary Isaac, a member of the South Western Branch of the Embroiderers Guild of Victoria. The badge, designed by long-time member Rita Williams, shows a Norfolk Island pine tree and a fence line. The South Western Branch of the Embroiderers Guild of Victoria was formed in Warrnambool in November 1974. Its first major project was the making of a patchwork quilt for the Lighthouse Keepers cottage at Flagstaff Hill. This was presented to the Warrnambool and District Historical Society at a meeting of the Embroiderers Guild attended by Historical Society members and representatives of Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village in October 1976. HUMBLE BEGINNINGS The Mission to Seafarers, which was originally known as the ‘Bethel Union’, was established in London in 1835, a recognition of the spiritual needs of seafarers who live a lonely life at sea. In 1857, the Bethel Union began a mission in Victoria aboard the Emily, a large hulk vessel donated by the government, with the object of establishing a floating church for sailors moored in Hobson’s Bay. The first chaplain, his wife and their eight children, three servants and livestock called the Emily home for two and a half years. Each week, sailors were taken to the Emily via a longboat to join in the Sunday services. Today following the same custom, seafarers are transported by bus to and from the docks by a volunteer bus service run from the Mission building at 717 Flinders Street. This window, named ‘On the Seas’, was installed in 1980 and represents the origins and history of the Mission to Seafarers through the symbols of a cross, maritime and Masonic imagery.Reflections of the Sea was an exhibition of 10 framed montage of photographs from the mission's archive collection showcasing 10 stained glass windows from the St Peter chapel. THE HOME OF THE MISSION TO SEAFARERS By 1907 the Mission to Seafarers Victoria had moved from providing its services aboard a floating vessel, the Emily, to three different bases in Melbourne locations: Williamstown, Port Melbourne and the North Bank of the Yarra - opening a central home in 1907, and finally at 717 Flinders Street in 1917. The Mission to Seafarers Victoria complex, includes the landmark domed gymnasium, which opened in 1920. The State heritage listed buildings of the Mission are considered architecturally significant urban examples of two distinct architectural styles: the external Spanish Mission Revival and the Arts and Crafts influence of the interior. THE CHAPLAINCY Although fostered by the Anglican Church since 1906, the work of the Mission to Seafarers’ is inter- denominational and is not limited by the physical space of its buildings. When the old Melbourne wharves and their moorings were still in use, chaplains would also visit ships to look after the welfare of those who could not visit the Mission. Today, the Mission’s ‘Ship Visitors’ provide a similar service. The Flinders Street central complex was purpose built to meet with seafarers’ needs: “...the first thing a sailor would see before the traps and temptations of the city would be the Institute and its comfortable rooms.” (The Argus, ND). Today, the Mission continues to offer its comfortable, safe spaces and a friendly ear to seafarers, alongside other services that extend well beyond those traditionally offered - including TV, phone cards, and access to the internet. This window, titled ‘Light of the World’, was installed in 1935 in memory of a former ‘M.V. THE HARBOUR LIGHTS GUILD The ‘Ladies Committee’ was formalised in 1906 to assist the chaplain with the social demands of the Mission, and was renamed the ‘Ladies Harbour Lights Guild’ the following year. According to former members, it operated with all proper decorum and with precise guidelines that restricted women from coming into contact with seafarers outside of Mission activities. With some 1,600 Victorian members during its early years, these volunteers gave their prayers, money, handiwork time and considerable energy in order to assist in providing for the welfare needs of visiting seafarers. The heritage chapel of St Peter, often referred to as the Mariners’ Chapel, features many examples of stained glass. Commemorating the service of Mercantile mariners, the funds to build the chapel were raised by the ladies of the Harbour Lights Guild. This window, titled ‘Faith’, was installed in 1933 to commemorate the devoted service of Miss Ethel Godfrey, a founding key member of the Ladies Harbour Lights Guild.Reflections of the Sea was an exhibition of 10 framed montage of photographs from the mission's archive collection showcasing 10 stained glass windows from the St Peter chapel. A KEY MELBOURNE LANDMARK Although primarily dedicated to providing for the welfare of visitors from abroad, the Mission has always been a community-based organisation, and its doors are always open to the general public. Today, the Flinders Street complex lends its ample space to a variety of community pursuits – including yoga classes, religious sermons and gallery exhibitions. The Mission also continues as a popular venue for weddings and other social events, mainly due to the endearing historical connections and unique architecture and ambience. It is a distinctive and significant feature of Melbourne’s riverside streetscape. This window, titled ‘Thou of Little Faith’ is part of a pair that were installed at around the time the Mission was built in 1917. Leisure object - Model of Pilot Vessel 'Alvina', 1959 -1962
The Australian pilot vessel and steam yacht Alvina had a long and varied career. It was built in the UK as a private yacht, 1891 and in 1903 came to Australia to commence in the pilot service at Port Phillip Heads. This model of the pilot ship is held by the nearby Queenscliff Maritime Museum in Victoria. In 1923 the larger Akuna took over from the Alvina, which then served as an excursion steamer and ferry in Westernport Bay for another 10 years when in 1933 it was replaced by an ex-Sydney vehicular ferry displaced by the new Harbour Bridge. Alvina was not scrapped until 1961. George Bass and Matthew Flinders made a voyage along the northern coast of Van Diemen's Land in 1798 to prove the existence of Bass Strait. The first vessel to attempt such a passage was the "Lady Nelson" under Lieutenant James Grant. Men sought out Bass Strait without the benefit of a lighthouse for the first half of the 19th Century after which, after several maritime disasters, on 29 August 1848, Cape Otway lighthouse commenced operation. Painting, Ian Parry, Night Time at North Wharf, 1990
Ian Parry (born 1947) is a Melbourne-born artist living in Tasmania, active since 1974 and collected by National and State Collections. He was winner of the 1990 ACTA Maritime art Prize. He also took part in 2006, to the ANL Art Prize organised each year at the Mission since 2003. In his biography on his website: Ian Parry was born into a family of seafaring descent. His extensive career as a respected practising artist and teacher, has uniquely included a fishing fleet apprenticeship and years as a single handed fisherman in Bass Strait. "In the early 70's when I first showed at the renowned Powell St gallery in Melbourne, the paintings were large, abstract, with allusion to the experience of the world of water, sky and land. My visual world has always been permeated with the wet parts of this place and continues to be so to this day. Maritime and geological charts and the daily necessity of plotting a course, appear in paintings where necessary, as a means of getting a schematic representation of the subject into play, trying to free the work from the tyranny of the horizon line but frequently returning. Now-a-days I am returning to abstraction, making paintings that allow me free rein with colour and composition, aiming for a sense of permanence and independence in each work." Equipment - Oar
This is one of four surf oars now on display at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village. The oars were once owned by the Warrnambool surf Live Saving Club. They are painted in the original club colours of brown and white. The Warrnambool Surf Life Saving Club was formed in 1930, and the elected President was Mr Fletcher Jones (later Sir Fletcher Jones). It is one of the oldest lifesaving clubs on the Victorian Coast. The donor was a member of the surf boat crew that won the 1952 Victorian Surf Boat Championships; the crew comprised Geoff Scott, Ron Blackney, Wes McLaren, Jim Tibb, and Stan Stephens. This oar is significant for its connection with the Warrnambool Surf Life Saving Club and as an example of equipment used for saving lives at sea in the local Warrnambool community. ENTERTAINMENT AND SOCIAL EVENTS The Ladies of the Harbour Lights Guild played a central role in everyday functions of the Mission to Seafarers. Concerts and social events were held nightly all the year round, as were special events on Cup Day, the King and Queen’s Birthdays, Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Years Eve. Ladies of the Guild and other friends of the Mission contributed greatly to the organisation of such occasions, which provided great comfort to seafarers so far removed from home and their loved ones. As one seafarer remarked: “Ah miss, it is not so much the concerts and picnics that does us men so good, but that you ladies will come and talk to us”. This window, titled ‘Hope’, was installed in 1933 in memoriam of one of the founders and long- standing members of the Guild, Miss Alice Tracey, who passed away in 1932. THE SEAS IN WARTIME During WWII, as many as 27,000 men of the merchant and the King’s navy perished during active service. Dedicated to seafarers’ wellbeing, the Mission’s spiritual roots also make it a place for reflection on the loss of human life at sea. The Mission to Seafarers’ ministry offers its support in hundreds of seaports around the world, and has played an important role in supporting those who have lost friends and family at sea during wartime. Many of the stained glass windows in the chapel are dedicated to these people, and represent many close maritime community relationships. This window was installed in 1947 in recognition of the heroism and courage of those who have served in the Merchant Navy, and in particular to those who lost their lives aboard the armed merchant cruiser, ‘Jervis Bay’. MIGRATION Travel is a luxury for most people, and although seafarers undoubtedly face hardships as part of their profession, they are also able to experience parts of the broader world than that of friends and family at home. The stories and experiences of seafarers - together with the work of the Mission to Seafarers ministry - contribute to the archive of ongoing global links and narratives of world trade and migration. As an example of this, in 1917 alone the Mission directed almost 6,000 letters written by visiting seafarers home to their families abroad, and received almost 3,000 letters in return. After experiencing Melbourne through the Mission, many seafarers later chose to make the city and Australia their home, and some chose to marry their partners at the Mission’s chapel. This is one of four surf oars now on display at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village. The oars were once owned by the Warrnambool surf Live Saving Club. They are painted in the original club colours of brown and white. The Warrnambool Surf Life Saving Club was formed in 1930, and the elected President was Mr Fletcher Jones (later Sir Fletcher Jones). It is one of the oldest lifesaving clubs on the Victorian Coast. The donor was a member of the surf boat crew that won the 1952 Victorian Surf Boat Championships; the crew comprised Geoff Scott, Ron Blackney, Wes McLaren, Jim Tibb, and Stan Stephens. Book, Port Fairy – The Town That Kept Its Character, 2018
This book by Marten Syme is a history of Port Fairy from 1835 to 2018. The earlier histories of Port Fairy do not cover most of the 20th century and none of the 21st century. This book is a scholarly work and offers fresh perspectives on many aspects of Port Fairy history and questions some long-held views, especially on the early years of the town. Port Fairy, 293 kilometres west of Melbourne, has a rich history and is one of the earliest places in Victoria to be settled by Europeans. The author Marten Syme has written extensively on both maritime and local history and is a resident of Port Fairy. This book is of considerable significance as it is a comprehensive history of Port Fairy and complements and adds to the earlier histories of this town. It will be a very useful addition to libraries and will be a great aid to family history and local history researchers.This is a hard cover book of 295 pages. The cover is grey with gold lettering on the spine. The dust cover has white printing and an illustration with a green background with a multi-colour design of sailing ships, trees and harbour entrance. Domestic object - Candle Bracket, c. 1878
This candle bracket was recovered from the wreck of the sailing ship Loch Ard after the to the disaster in 1878. The bracket has been hand forged into a pleasing shape and design. The candle holder on the arm of the bracket cn swivel from side to side allowing the light to be adjusted. LOCH ARD 1873-1878 – The Scottish-built clipper ship Loch Ard was bound for Melbourne in 1878 with 54 people on board. The mixed cargo it carried included items for the 1880 International Exhibition in Melbourne, one of which was the now famous Majorca ware Minton ‘Peacock’ statue. The Loch Ard was wrecked on June 1st when the ship crashed into Mutton Bird Island, east of Port Campbell. The only survivors were Tom Pearce, a crew member, and Eva Carmichael, a young passenger who was rescued by Pearce. The Gibsons, owners of nearby Glenample Homestead, cared for Tom, and for Eva who stayed longer before returning to Ireland. The wreck of the Loch Ard was discovered in 1967, before the introduction of the Victorian historic shipwreck legislation. In 1969 it was decided that all recovered material should be lodged with the Receiver of Wrecks. In 1980 Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum Divers received a permit to recover artefacts from the wreck to safeguard them from looters. In 1982 the site was listed as a Historic Shipwreck, and the Maritime Archaeology Unit recovered loose artefact material. The candle bracket is an example of light fittings from the ship ‘Loch Ard’ or from part of the ship’s cargo, imported for use in Colonial Victoria in the 19th to early 20th century. Flagstaff Hill’s collection of artefacts from LOCH ARD is significant for being one of the largest collections of artefacts from this shipwreck in Victoria. It is significant for its association with the shipwreck, which is on the Victorian Heritage Register (VHR S417). The collection is significant because of the relationship between the objects, as together they have a high potential to interpret the story of the LOCH ARD. The LOCH ARD collection is archaeologically significant as the remains of a large international passenger and cargo ship. The LOCH ARD collection is historically significant for representing aspects of Victoria’s shipping history and its potential to interpret sub-theme 1.5 of Victoria’s Framework of Historical Themes (living with natural processes). The collection is also historically significant for its association with the LOCH ARD, which was one of the worst and best known shipwrecks in Victoria’s history. The ship was built in 1953 by Ferguson Shipbuilders of Port Glasgow, Scotland for the Port Phillip Sea Pilots organisation as a pilot cutter. Her role as a pilot cutter was to sail with pilots on board to meet ships entering Port Phillip Bay. Pilots would be transferred by the Wyuna's workboat to the vessel requiring pilotage while it was stopped dead in the water, with shelter provided by the vessel itself. In the early 1970s the pilot service started using fast launches to allow pilots to board while ships were still underway, and in 1979 the Wyuna was sold to the Australian Maritime College in Launceston, Tasmania as a training vessel. She continued in that role until 2004 when sold to Mineralogy Pty Ltd as an accommodation vessel. In September 2013 she was donated to the Western Port Oberon Association for the Victorian Maritime Centre currently at Crib Point. For a time she was docked at Beauty Point, Tasmania, and after being refurbished for 18 months she was to be moved to Docklands in Melbourne, Victoria. After this berth became unavailable the vessel was docked at Inspection Head Wharf in Beauty Point. After a period there it was towed into Bell Bay where she lays at anchor as of January 2016. This jardinière is one of many 19th and early 20th-century items donated to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village by the Giles Family. It would have been used to contain a potted plant or similar foliage to decorate a room. Donated to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village by Vera and Aurelin Giles, this item is associated with Warrnambool and the Giles Family history. Many items have been donated by the family and have come to be known as the “Giles Collection”. Many items in the Lighthouse Keeper’s Cottage that were donated by Vera and Aurelin Giles mostly came from the home of Vera’s parents-in-law, Henry Giles and his wife Mary Jane (nee Freckleton), who married in 1880 and whose photos are on display in the parlour. Henry was born at Tower Hill in 1858 and was a labourer on the construction of the Warrnambool Breakwater before leaving in 1895 for around seven years to build bridges in NSW. Mary Jane was born in 1860 at Cooramook, and she attended Mailor’s Flat State School and where she eventually became a student teacher. After which she became a governess at “Injemiara”, where her grandfather, Francis Freckleton, had once owned land. Henry and Mary’s family consisted of six; some of the children were born at Mailor’s Flat, and later, some children were born at Wangoom. They lived with their parents at Wangoom and Purnim west, and this is where Henry died in 1933 and Mary Jane died in 1940. The Giles family collection has social significance at a local level, because it illustrates the level of material support the Warrnambool community gave to Flagstaff Hill when the Museum was established. It also represents typical furniture and household goods owned by settlers in the Warrnambool District in the late 19th and early 20th century. The Jardinière is a good example of late Victorian memorabilia that was to be found in many homes of the period.Plant container: brass and copper jardinière, with tooled and pressed ornamental rose design on a band of copper around the planter and braised seam joins. Booklet - Embroiderers Guild, 1984
This booklet, written by member Rita Williams, gives information on the history of the first decade of the South Western Embroiderers Guild, Warrnambool. The guild was formed in 1974 with an initial membership of 36. In the first ten years the guild members were active, making contact with other embroiderers, holding exhibitions, making a patchwork quilt for the bed at the Lighthouse Keepers’ Cottage at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and making an embroidered mural of Warrnambool presented to the Warrnambool Regional Performing Arts Centre in 1983. This mural features over 80 local buildings, Norfolk Island pines and small figures and other objects. The Embroiderers Guild continues to prosper today. This booklet is of interest as it contains the early history of the South Western Embroiderers Guild, a significant organization in Warrnambool. This is a booklet of 24 pages with a cover in brown and cream tonings featuring an image of the Warrnambool Coat of Arms and a tapestry. The pages contain a sketch and printed material. This important booklet and record of service is first stamped and dated in 1913. It is unlikely to be the first booklet issued as the seafarer Arthur O. Dixon b. 1879 commenced maritime service in 1904 working for the Harrison Line between 1904 and 1914. He enlisted as an RNR officer during WW1. He is recorded as returning to Merchant vessel service with the New Zealand Shipping Co between 1916-1920. He subsequently was employed with Adelaide Steamship Co between 1920 and 1921. All documentation shows him to be regarded as an officer of good character and reliable. On leaving seafaring Mr Dixon eventually took up a smallholding in regional Victoria.Unusually for the early 20th C. era of Mr Dixon's service at sea two images of Mr Dixon survive on ID papers and were included in the gift of papers. Personal objects included an unusual small travel size New Testament (see VC record ) heavily annotated provide further insights into the experience of early 20th C. seafarers.Fabric reinforced and backed heavy card covers and service book with multiple pages pre printed for completion by either handwritten entries or ink stamps. Plaque - Memorial Plaque, Ethel Augusta Godfrey
This plaque was erected in the Williamstown Sailors' Rest, the former skating ring in Thompson Street. It's one the three memorials to Ethel Godfrey with the stained glass window in the St Peter chapel in the Central Institute (See 0064.2) ) and the optus sectile plaque in the 1888 Port Melbourne Institute (See 2053) . This plaque was moved to the Nelson Place building when the Mission purchased the E,S&A Bank in 1943. In 1982, the plaque ws removed from the Williamstown mission along with 4 other plaques, objects and furniture to furnish the chapel of the new Flagstaff Maritime Museum. A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE Before the increase of air transport, everything that arrived or departed from Australia did so via the ports and wharves. The Mission to Seafarersis not a Victorian initiative, but rather a global network that currently operates in over 260 ports worldwide, assisting over 1.3 million seafaring men and women each year. The importance of the Mission’s role is demonstrated in the Chaplain’s Report 1947, which notes that ships and their crews are: “...inextricably linked with the well-being of Australian industrial and economic life... This, in turn, means that you cannot escape some share in responsibility for their welfare.” This window, titled ‘Noli Me Tangere’, was installed in memoriam of Moira Oliver, the wife of the Reverend Frank Oliver, chaplain at the Mission 1930-60, and whose dedication in life and service to the welfare of seafarers was inspirational to many.Reflections of the Sea was an exhibition of 10 framed montage of photographs from the mission's archive collection showcasing 10 stained glass windows from the St Peter chapel. This exhibition curated by Georgia Melville and Catherine McLay, and funded by PROV and Creative Victoria, was displayed in the World Trade Centre Wharf Gallery in June July 2013 and toured to Queenscliff Maritime Museum. The photographs of the windows were taken by scientific photographer Justine M. Philip. The ship HMAS Cerberus was Built at Jarrow, Newcastle upon Tyne, England, in 1870, specifically for the colony of Victoria (Australia) and originally named HMVS Cerberus. It had a displacement of 3480 tons and could travel at the speed of 10 knots. The ship carried 4x 10 inch M.L.R. guns. The ship was renamed HMAS Cerberus in 1911 when the navy became the Royal Australian Navy. The photograph was mounted by members of HMAS Cerberus at Crib Point, Western Port Bay, Victoria in 1986. It was presented to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village by the HMAS Cerberus Museum in 1986 to commemorate the ship's 75 years of service for the Royal Australian Navy. The photograph is significant for its connection with the colony of Victoria before Federation.
