Photographs taken at the time of the purchase by Western Mining Corporation of the property owned by G.P. Daly of Raywood Road, Woodvale, in 1986. The intent of the purchase was to provide land for the Woodvale ponds. Land size was 16 acres, known as Allotment 13, Section 3, Parish of Nerring. Kralcopic Pty Ltd, was a subsidiary of Bendigo-based company GBM Gold and had previously held mining licences around Bendigo, which incorporated sites including Kangaroo Flat, New Moon, Eaglehawk and the associated Woodvale Evaporation Ponds Complex. In August 2019, the Earth Resources Regulator decided not to renew Kralcopic’s three mining licences, due to the company’s inability to provide surety that it could finance its mining activities and site rehabilitation obligations. In October 2020, the company filed legal proceedings in the Supreme Court challenging the decision not to renew these licences. The Supreme Court later upheld the regulator’s decision not to renew the licences. On 23 April 2021, the Federal Court of Australia appointed KPMG as Kralcopic’s liquidators. On 14 May 2021, the liquidator lodged papers with the Australian Securities and Investment Commission (ASIC) to disclaim Kralcopic’s freehold land at Woodvale and parcels of land around the company’s former Bendigo sites, with the land to subsequently become Crown land. The Earth Resources Regulator has put a statutory exemption in place to preclude new mining licence applications on the sites while we undertake rehabilitation. The exemption also provides an opportunity for government to consider future uses of the sites in consultation with the City of Greater Bendigo and the local community. The Earth Resources Regulator holds rehabilitation bonds totalling $5.9 million, which it will use to rehabilitate the former sites.Colour photocopy of original photo. The modern mine is accessed via the Swan Decline, which commences at the Kangaroo Flat site on the southern outskirts of Bendigo and progresses in a north easterly direction between the Deborah and Sheepshead anticlines, reaching a depth of almost 1000 m below the City of Bendigo. Development of this decline commenced in 1998. Swan Decline closed and history preserved In a major rehabilitation milestone at Kangaroo Flat, the Swan Decline Bendigo’s primary gateway to underground mining, was permanently closed in December 2022. Important parts of Bendigo’s gold rush history were also preserved from the onsite office buildings with 19 boxes of records, and 1350 old photos being scanned and provided to the local historical societies and the Goldfields Library Corporation. A volunteer from the Bendigo Historical Society, Kay MacGregor, also scanned approximately 40 bookshelves of newspaper clippings to assist with recording and preserving geological drilling locations.Black and white photocopies of photographs of Swan Decline, showing some stages of underground construction. Originally called Graham's South Moon Mine was situated on the Garden Gully Reef, Eaglehawk. Initially owned by George William Graham (1827-1896) who was born in England. George moved out of mining in 1855 when he opened a hotel and store at Milkmaids flat and later he opened a business in Emu Creek. He retired from business in 1870 but then invested in various mining enterprises. HE married twice in 1852 and 1878.Horwood Collection - South Moon. John Brown Industries became a listed company in 1951 and acquired Star Hosiery Mills factory and its Bendigo offshoot. In 1955 they purchased a 4 acre site at Ironbark to build a new mill. This was completed in a record 19and a half weeks and the mill was handed over in Sept. 1956.Photographs of the Erection of John Brown Knitting Mills: A brown envelope which had hand printed writing in black ink. Work started on the Lauriston Reservoir in 1939 as part of the Coliban water system and was officially opened by Victorian Premier, Albert Dunstan in 1941. Capacity was increased in 1946 when steel spillway gates were added. SCHOOLS OF MINES HAD BEEN ESTABLISHED AT SEVERAL OTHER DISTRICT CENTRES INCLUDING MARYBOROUGH AND CRESWICK, OTHERS WERE TO FOLLOW AT ARARAT, STAWELL AND DAYLESFORD 1890 CLUNES BOROUGH COUNCIL WITH MR JOSEPH BRYANT LEADING, APPROACHED THE BALLARAT SCHOOL OF MINES REQUESTING SUPPORT FOR A BRANCH SCHOOL AT CLUNES OFFERING ELEMENTARY CLASSES WITH SMB STAFF AS LECTURERS SMB COUNCIL AGREED TO STAFF THE SUGGESTED CLASSES. SEVERAL PUBLIC LECTURES WERE ARRANGED AT CLUNES TO HELP CREATE INTEREST IN THE NEW CLUNES BRANCH OF SMB. CLASSES SOMMENCED SOME AT THE CLUNES FREE LIBRARY AND SOME AT THE NEW NORTH CLUNES MINE OFFICE/LABORATORY PER FAVOUR OF JOSEPH BRYANT WHO WAS HONORARY DIRECTOR OF THE BRANCH SCHOOL. 1891 LOWER STUDENT NUMBERS CAUSING CONCERN.. EDUCATION DEPARTMENT REGULATIONS FOR SCHOOLS OF MINES AND TECHNICAL SCHOOLS AND CONFLICTING VIEWS OF GOVERMENTMINISTERS RE SUBJECTS THAT COULD BE TAUGHT , CAUSED DIFFICULTIES. ONE LOCATION FOR ALL CLASSES BECAME THE ANTICIPATED SOLUTION TO MOST PROBLEMS. TITLE CLUNES SCHOOL OF MINES NO 24 APPEARED IN MEDIA NOTICES AND REPORTS WEST PARADE SITE FRONTING SERVICE STREET GRANTED BY CLUNE SBOROUGH COUNCIL TO COUNCIL OF CLUNES SCHOOL OF MINES FOR ERECTION OF BUILDING FOR SCHOOL PURPOSES. BUILDING COMMENCED 1892 NEW BUILDING OPENED IN FEBRUARY. ALL CLASSES CONDUCTED IN NEW BUILDING.SEVERE LIMITATION IN FUNDING FOR TECHNICAL EDUCATION AND IN MOST GOVERNMENT ACTIVITIES WAS EVIDENT NEW REGULATIONS FOR TECHNICAL SCHOOLS ANNOUNCED FOR OPERATION IN 1893, THE RQUIREMENTS FOR FUNDINGS WERE MUCH TOUGHER. 1893 STUDENT NUMBERS STILL VERY DISAPPOINTING. INSPECTORS DENNANT AND SIMPSON VISITED AND ADVISED ON BEST POSSIBLE FUNDING PROCURABLE . ... . CUB ceased brewing at the Ballarat Brewery site in 1989 ...In 1872 William Tulloch and Alexander McLaren constructed a new brick 'Royal Standard Brewery' to the design of architect Henry R. Caselli. They had been operating a much smaller 'Royal Standard' Brewery, possibly since 1859. The Ballarat Brewing Company was established in 1895 and took over operations of the 'Royal Standard'. This new company resulted in the merger of the 'Royal Standard Brewery', James Coglans 'Phoenix Brewery' (Warrenheip) and Henry Leggo's 'Barley Sheaf Brewery' (Creswick Rd). J. Coglan and W. Tulloch were principals of the new company. By 1912 the Ballarat Brewery buildings fronting Armstrong Street were upgraded and new plant installed. Ballarat Brewing Company was well established as a thriving business. In 1926 'Ballarat Bertie' (the cellar-man) advertising image was introduced. It was used successfully until 1994 on 'Ballarat Bitter' labels. During the1940s and 50s the Ballarat Brewing Company was significantly upgraded and extended equipment and buildings. In 1959 Carlton and United Breweries purchased the Ballarat Brewery, its brewing rights and the land (but not the 114 BBC hotels or the Dana Street offices). The Lydiard Street frontage become the 'front' of the CUB Brewery. CUB ceased brewing at the Ballarat Brewery site in 1989 and closed the plant. Four years later the 'brewery site' was purchased by the Ballarat School of Mines to enlarge its campus area as TAFE was a rapidly expanding areas of education. In 1994 plans were developed for the 'Brewery Complex' with careful regard for needed educational facilities and due concern regarding historical aspects of the site and its buildings. There was close consultation and cooperation with the Ballarat City Council during the planning process. In 1995 most of the Brewery buildings were demolished by some special structures and features are preserved. The old brewery chimney was retained as a permanent reminder of the original industrial site, as were two boilers. The SMB Brewery Complex was completed in 1996 and reflects aspects of the former brewery's appearance. It was opened by Prime Minister John Howard on 28 February 1997. One of his biggest transactions was in Mr Ballerstedt and Son's properties, the 180 Mine, the Fortuna Battery and equipment and house on the site where Fortuna Villa now stands, which he purchased on behalf of the late George Lansell for 30,000 pounds. He was well rewarded with good commissions.
