The State Electricity Commission of Victoria constructed the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme in the north east of Victoria. Mr R.M. Duncan prepared the notes. He was a member of the S.E.C. Kiewa Branch from 1949 - 1966. This book was commissioned by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria. It consists of the early history of the Bogong High Plains and the origin of names of places and creeks in the area.This book was researched in 1968 by Mr R.M. Duncan who worked for the S.E.C. on the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme from 1949 to 1966. His sources were the Melbourne Public Library, the Victorian Historical Society, the North Eastern Victorian Historical Society and the Dept. of Crown Lands & Survey, Melbourne. The book is an accurate history of the Bogong High Plains given the available records at the time. This book has been in the collection of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society for many years and little is known of its origins. ‘Anne Watson’ may be Annie Watson, nee Grant (1830-1906), the wife of John Watson who came to Victoria in 1855 and had a farm in the Cudgee area. There is a reference to a ‘G. Geary’ as a member of the Belfast (Port Fairy) Choral Society in 1860. This is an early memento of settlers in the Warrnambool area and their religious adherence and, as such, is of some interest. This is a hard cover book of 391 pages. The cover is brown leather with gold lettering on the spine. The pages are gilt-edged. The inscription is handwritten in black ink. These medals have been issued to members of the Warrnambool and District Caledonian Society (one to a committee member). This group is dedicated to preserving and promoting Scottish heritage in the local area and sponsors Scottish country dancing and Highland dancing. The group has its origins in the establishment in Warrnambool of the Western Caledonian Society in 1864 and annual Highland Gatherings were held in the district for many decades after this. Many Bendigo hotels included Skittle Alley's and some early mentions of these include Epsom in 1856. Teams could even play for monetary prizes. This book, written by Matthew Richardson, gives details of the song ‘Waltzing Matilda’. This song is the most famous and best-loved song in Australia and its origins start in Warrnambool. In 1894 Christina McPherson heard an old folk song played by the local Garrison Artillery Band at the Warrnambool races and later in Queensland she played the tune to Andrew Barton (Banjo) Paterson who wrote the words to the music. This book is retained as it gives details of the song ‘Waltzing Matilda’. Warrnambool has the claim to fame of being the place where this well-known Australian song began. This is a children’s book and has the signature of Esther Kruger (1924). She may be Esther Auguste Kruger, born at Penshurst in 1912 to Heinrich and Mary Kruger. She is probably related to the Kruger families of Warrnambool. Johann C.A. Kruger, of German origin, arrived in Warrnambool about 1850 and opened shops in the town, firstly with Davidson and then with the Stelling Brothers. He was also the first Manager of the Warrnambool Tramway. This book in itself is of little significance but it is interesting as an example of the type of book read by young girls and boys in the early 20th century. It is, however, of some significance because of its inscription as it belonged to Esther Kruger who was most likely connected with the Kruger families in Warrnambool. The Krugers were prominent in Warrnambool’s history in the 19th and early 20th centuries. This is a hard cover book of 80 pages. It has a dark red cover with an illustration in red, yellow, blue and black tonings of a young boy and girl with a dog. The spine has an illustration in blue, tan and black tonings of two children with a hoop. The book has a colour plate of a family scene and nine story chapters. The chapters open with an ornamental first letter of the first word. Clinton Naina’s earliest memory is attending Collingwood football matches at Victoria Park with his father and uncles. His dad was an avid Collingwood supporter and Naina proudly wore his football colours. Lining up to enter the grounds at the big old black-and-white painted wooden doors gave Naina the feeling of entering into another world. 'Rule 30' is a comment on race relations in sport. The artwork is made from the original doors located at the front entrance of the Collingwood Football Club’s grounds at Victoria Park. When the club was refurbished the door was gifted to Naina by a friend—an ex-Collingwood football player—for use in his art practice. The work depicts a big red target painted on the existing Black and white stripes—Collingwood colours—of the door. Naina placed a fabric number ‘30’ on top of the target—created from material used for numbers on the back of players’ football vests. This represents the individuals who have been racially vilified while playing football over many years. The red represents the colour of human blood, while the Blak and white Collingwood colours already painted on the wood are a very fitting comment on race relations. The door itself becomes a potent metaphor for “overcoming barriers, making change, breaking down doors and moving forth into a new era of respect for people”. Rule 30 in the AFL was the first racial vilification code in Australian sport. It prohibited conduct between players, clubs and other AFL officials, which threatened, disparaged, vilified or insulted another person on the basis of that person’s race, religion, colour, descent or ethnic origin.
