A cabinet scraper (sometimes called a ‘card scraper’) is a woodworking tool used for shaping and finishing furniture. The name ‘cabinet’ is used because scrapers are versatile and important tools for cabinet makers to provide a smooth surface to a finished cabinet. The body and the cutting edges of most cabinet scrapers are formed from a single piece of material. The blades are created on each edge of the body. Also, a scraper can have adjustable blades and a wooden handle these are two-handled cabinet scrapers. Cabinet scrapers are used manually to scrape small amounts of material from the surface of the wood to smooth it, shape it, or remove an old finish such as varnish from its surface. They are commonly used on furniture and musical instruments such as guitars and violins. The Forests Commission developed the use of helicopters for aerial ignition from the mid 1960s. Bryant and May at Richmond worked with the Commission to develop a Delayed Action Incendiary Device. DAIDs as the were known, had an overall length of 180 mm, striker end length - 10 mm. Ignition end length - 80 mm, then a layer of high melting point wax (to prevent accidental ignition when rubbing together in transit). Both ends coated with a modified match head compound with safety fuse exposed length between coated match ends. There was a 17-second delay from when the small end was struck to an intense flaming of the large end, which lasted for 40 seconds. Other types on large matches known as fusees were also used. A courting chain was carved by a man and given to the girl he was courting. This was a common European practice in the past, with Welsh courting chains surviving from the 17th century, though the practice may have gone back even further than that. The chain indicated that man was a capable artisan and was occupying his hands in a healthy way, particularly when the lady was present. The many types of loops and chains carved all had symbolic meanings. The cage with the wooden balls inside was said to indicate the desire of the man for children and the number he would like. The symbolism of the arm and hand with the two digits touching is not known. This courting chain has no known local provenance but it is an interesting object as an example of the customs of the past. It will be useful for displays. This is a wooden carved courting chain. One end is in the shape of an arm and hand with the thumb and first finger touching at the tips. Then there are three chains linked to the arm with a peg inserted into another loop at the end. Next, joined to this, is another loop attached to a wooden cage which has two wooden balls inside. To commemorate the contribution of Mr MacLennan, this tablet was commissioned and on display in the foyer of the Braille Library in Commercial Road. It consists of a wooden frame, with a copper inset of Scottish thistles (to the left and right) and gum leaves and nuts (above and below) surrounding a sepia photograph of Mr MacLennan. A blue glass plate below the photograph reads "The social, friendly, honest man/ What e'ver he be/ 'Tis he fulfils great / Nature's plan / And none but he. Burns". To the left and right of this are accompanying blue glass plates with interwoven lines. At the base of the tablet is another blue glass plate: "To perpetuate the memory of the late/ William Hector MacLennan/ Who died on Sept. 18th 1929/ He was one of the founders of this Association/ and President of the Social Committee from its inception/ 1894-1929". Wandin Thomas Sebire JP (1867-1960) learnt boot-making as a young man. In a small workshop on his property in Sebire Avenue, Wandin he made boots for family, friends & neighbours. He also repaired boots & made other small leather articles. Bootmaking is a complex process requiring a variety of tools. The leather is cut to shape, glazed & burnished (polished) with heated irons. The pieces are stretched onto, & nailed to, a wooden last to form the boot. Once attached to the insole, the boot is finished on a metal last. Uppers are stitched with waxed thread through holes made with an awl. Heels comprise pieces nailed together & neatened with a heel shave. Wooden crosses were installed in the grass verge of the Shrine in 1995 to mark the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II. It was called the Field of Remembrance. These photos show some of the crosses, and with The Shrine in the background. The Field of Remembrance was publicised in editions of the Answer and featured on the cover of the October 1995 edition. The field of crosses was part of "Australia Remembers 1945 -1995". Crosses were available without charge (but by donation) at kiosk near the Shrine and names and unit numbers could be added and the cross placed in the Shrine grounds. The crosses were later gathered and burnt with the ashes being scattered on 11th November 1995. In the April 1997 edition of The Answer a poem was published that was written about the crosses. This mounted chart, dated 21 August 1971 is under glass in a wooden frame and covers Bass Strait between Cape Otway and Gabo Island, showing southern and eastern Victoria and the whole of Tasmania. The frame was possibly handmade locally. The charts are specific to the Gabo Island Lightstation and have second level contributory significance for their historic value and provenance to the lightstation.Blue / grey & white nautical chart of Cape Otway to Gabo Island . This wooden board has two differently designed sides: one with four strips running the length of the board and the other with seven strips of wood running across the width of the board. These strips and various ridges around the edge and in the 'lanes' assist players as they play card games. The attached booklets describe the sides as Squares (4 strips) or Streets (7 strips), which could be used to play a variety of card games described. On the Squares side: Carpet, Count Nogo, Frames and Poker Patience and on the Streets side: Triangles and Henley could be played in addition to the traditional game of Patience. The items include a wooden ruler, masonite and metal clipboard, metal stapler and desk calendar holder made of metal, date from the 1970s. Three clear glass ink bottles and a black Bakelite fountain pen with screw on top are a little earlier in date, and all appear to have a reliable provenance to the lightstation. They have second level significance as small items of office equipment used in the day-to-day running of the lightstation. Ernest Butcher served as No 56 8th Light Horse Regiment. He died of wounds sustained during the August 1915 offensive at Gallipoli. He is buried at Ari Burnu Cemetery Gallipoli. The death medallion was mounted on a wooden panel by his nephew Arthur Butcher and presented to 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles on Anzac Day 1977. The 8th Light Horse suffered crippling casualties in the August offensive at Gallipoli. This calf yoke is a wooden beam used between a pair of calves to enable them to pull together on a load when working in pairs. This item was made for John Mundy as a child. The original Mundy family moved to a land "selection" at Betebolong in the early 1880's from Buchan. To honour 15 years of service provided, a bronze coloured medallion inset to a wooden column was awarded to individuals. On the front is a cameo of a woman wearing a pendant and an old fashioned ruffled blouse. Around the outside is written 'Vision Australia Foundation Tilly Aston Award' and below this '15 Year Award'. The board was made from a piece of quarry slate set in a wooden frame. In early times a slate pencil (not chalk) was used to form the letters. This slate pencil was often sharpened on the school wall. The advantage of slates over paper was that they could be wiped clean and used again and again. Children had to bring a dampened cloth or sponge to school so that they could clean the slate and start again but often they would use their own spit and the cuff of their sleeve! This chair has no maker's marks. The studs still on the seat, and the ventilation holes in the wooden seat, seem to indicate that the seat once had an upholstered cushion. These items have no known provenance and no information has been found on the Barnards on the printing blocks, delivery paper and stamps. The stamp for ‘W.I.O. Barnard’ was sent to an address in Camberwell so it is presumed that the Barnard family members were in Melbourne and not in the Warrnambool district.The only interest in these items is in the printing blocks and stamps. They are good examples of the type of printing used in the early 20th century and the type of stamp used by individuals for letterheads, visiting cards, personal items etc. There are 5 objects in this collection:- 1. Plaque commemorating the awarding of the Takeo Iwahashi Prize to Hugh Jeffrey in 1988. Takeo Iwahashi was the founder of the Nippon Lighhouse for the Blind in Japan. He made an enormous contribution to the lives and progress of blind people around the world, and was a great friend of Helen Keller. The annual Takeo Iwahashi Award was founded in his memory and is awarded to a "worker for the blind whose contribution to work for the blind in the fields of education, training, rehabilitation, placement, prevention and cure of blindness, administration of services for the welfare of the blind or any other program related to the welfare of the blind has been outstanding." The plaque features two roughly rectangular wooden veneer boards, one smaller layered on top of the larger, with the top edges aligning. On the smaller top layer is a round metal disc featuring a raised relief portrait of Takeo Iwahashi. Flat irons were also called sad irons or smoothing irons. Metal handles had to be gripped in a pad or thick rag. Some irons had cool wooden handles and in 1870 a detachable handle was patented in the US. The detachable insulated handle was designed to be always cool for ironing. The handle was detachable, so that several irons could be on the stove at one time and the handle swapped between several bodies. This handle appears to belong to a Mrs Potts' sad iron - Reg. No. 1885. This item is an example of an invention that was universally adopted because it meant that users could keep several irons on the stove at one time and the handle swapped when needed. The original Mrs Potts irons had handles made of wood (walnut) and this enabled the user to us the iron without sustaining burns. The item reminds us of the difficult circumstances experienced in their daily routines by the early families in Orbost A wooden handle which has been painted green. The base is made of cast aluminium and is attached to the handle by two screws ( not original). In the base is a hinged piece for attaching to the iron, held to the base plate by a spring and operated by a wooden knob for quick release. This device assists blind music teachers to teach music notation to the sighted, by using a braille dial. Created by Percival Mayhew in the 1920-1930's, it consists of a wooden frame with a window, behind which is a sliding list of 63 staff notations and 17 sol-fa tones. To use, the teacher sits behind the indicator (to align the Braille scale of signs) whilst the student sits in front of the window and views the printed version.
