Tom Bentley (1912-1993) was born in Lancashire (UK). From circa 1951, he was the Overseer/Superintendent of Outdoor Works for Kew City Council. Until his retirement in the 1970s, he was based at the Kew Council Depot, located in the former MTB Horse Tram Depot on the corner of Disraeli and High Streets, Kew. Fawcett Hall is 14 kilometres North West of Alexandra, North East Victoria, in Spring Creek Road and is set amongst a small picturesque rural farming and business community with hills as a backdrop and Stony Creek running alongside the public reserves property boundary. Sarah Jane Ellis was matron of the Ballarat Female Refuge, Scott's Parade, from 1906 until 31 May 1921. The Ballarat Female Refuge was established in Grant Street by a group of 26 women in 1867. Caselli designed the building in Scott's Parade and unmarried mothers were catered for in this residence from 1884 until 1941. The Alexandra Babies' Home was built adjacent to the Refuge and opened in 1909. The Babies' Home closed in 1973.A woman in white apron and cap. The children in the picture were students at the Greek language school which was run by the Greek Community of Melbourne and were attending the '28th October' Greek national day celebration at the Evangelismos Greek Orthodox Church in East Melbourne. The two women, Alexandra Vrachna and Nina Black were teachers at the school. The Evangelismos Church was the first Greek orthodox Church to be established in Melbourne. The foundation stone was laid in December 1900 and church services commenced in August 1902. The 28th October is known as 'OHI' DAY', translated meaning NO DAY. It is an important national day celebrated in Greece and the Greek diaspora and commemorates the anniversary when in 1940 the then Prime Minister Ioannis Metaxas said “NO” to an ultimatum made by Italian Prime Minister Benito Mussolini to allow Italian forces to occupy Greece. It marked the beginning of Greece's entry into WW2. The day symbolises values important to the Greek people - freedom, courage and 'filotimo'. The establishment of the Orthodox church in Melbourne in the early years of the twentieth century was was indicative of the number of Greek migrants who came to Australia in those early years of settlement in this country and the desire maintain their religious and cultural traditions. The early Greek migrants were anxious that their Australian born children maintain their language and religion in their adopted country. The original Methodist (Wesleyan) Church was built on the corner of Alexandra Crescent and Windsor Lane in 1888. It was enlarged in 1892. In 1908 this building was removed to Valonia Avenue by horse-drawn dray. The brick church was built in 1915 after which the earlier building became the Sunday School. In 1977 the Methodist Church joined with others to become the Uniting Church. Pictured in Ithaca are Stathi and Spiro Alexandratos who are the brothers of Yianni Alexandratos who lived in Melbourne until returning to live permanently in Greece with his wife Zoi and children Penny and George in the early 1970s. In the early 1900s their father Giorgos Alexandratos was a partner in the 'Alexandra Bros' London Café at 25 Elizabeth Street. Giorgos was a founding member of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society. Children's picture book that belonged to Phyllis Annie Diggins (nee Anderson). Phyllis and her sister Jessie Alexandra Diggins (nee Anderson) were sisters born in Bendigo. This book was donated by the son of Jessie Diggins. After leaving Bendigo the family lived in Kew. The sisters later married brothers - Joseph Diggins (Phyllis) and Victor Edgar Diggins ((Jessie). For many years the families returned to Bendigo to attend the Easter Fair, staying at the Shamrock Hotel. Phyllis was born 10.9.1908 and died 6.11.2004."Our Little Ones ABC".
