Hugh D.T. WIlliamson C.B.E. was born in Ballarat on 04 February 1901 and died on 20 December 1985. "He witnessed first-hand the difficulties of rural life exacerbated by a world war that had stripped whole towns of their young men, and the long, lean years of the Depression were to define the way he lived the rest of his life. Hard work, constancy, eschewing wastage of any kind along with a hunger to seize opportunities wherever they presented themselves were the principles that informed his life and career and which, in time, gave rise to a commitment to others and to organisations and communities in which he saw the same ideals. Hugh attained the rank of Honorary Colonel in the Salvation Army and attained its highest award in 1978 when he was presented with its Distinguished Service Medal. In his time with the Salvation Army, Hugh helped establish the Red Shield Appeal and established scholarships to support senior officers to obtain business management training at the Australian Administrative Staff College in Mt Eliza (operated from a property formerly owned by Sir Reginald Ansett). He began his working life at age 16 at the Ballarat Banking Company. He steadily worked his way up through the ranks of the banking industry to become General Manager of the ANZ Bank from which he retired in 1961. He had hoped to go to photography school in London but the earliest he could get in was November so he decided to return to Australia. August was the earliest booking he could obtain. In the meantime he is returning to Norway in the hope of finding work there. He asks his mother to send money from his account in Melbourne to his bank in London.Quinn CollectionA six-page letter written in green ink on three sheets of very thin, unlined, buff-coloured paper (0856.a1-6) headed London and dated 16/01/51. Each sheet of paper has been folded in book form. The air-mail envelope (0856.b) bordered by alternating yellow and blue stripes, is postmarked London. Two stamps, a three penny purple, and a one shilling brown, are placed in the top right-hand corner. On the back of the envelope is a return address written in green ink, and some penciled numbers. Enclosed is a separate letter on a smaller sheet of the same paper (0856.c).The letter (0856.a1-6) is from Allan to his mother. The smaller letter (0856.c) is from Allan to the Manager of The State Savings Bank of Victoria, Head Office, Melbourne giving permission for Allan's mother to draw on his account. On the bottom of this letter is a purple, oval imprint. Part of the writing around the imprint is illegible and part reads '...of Victoria * Elizabeth St. Melb. * ...' In the middle of the oval is printed '24 Jan 1951' and 'Manager's Clerk'. Across the lower left corner is written in black ink 'Signature verified' and a signature (illegible). Built in 1858 at the Port and Harbour Master's yard in Williamstown Victoria, the Portland Lifeboat was overseen by Harbour Master Charles Ferguson. It is understood to have been constructed from the same moulds used to build the Port Fairy Lifeboat, designed by William White, in 1857. Both boats are similar to the lifeboats designed in England by James Peake and adopted by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) in the UK. The Portland Lifeboat's 9.14 m (30 ft) long hull is double diagonally planked in New Zealand kauri, and many of the planks run from gunwale to gunwale in one piece under the inner keel section. Eucalyptus and oregon were used elsewhere and the local blacksmith made the iron work. The fastenings are copper. There are two flotation or buoyancy tanks at either end, with prominent whaleback style decking. Under the thwarts is a deck with scuppers so that the craft is both buoyant and self draining whenever large waves are taken aboard in rough conditions. The lifeboat was oar-powered with a sailing rig. The original rig was a lug mainsail, but this was replaced with a lug and headsail rig taken from a fishing boat in 1903. The lifeboat was manned by volunteer crews, mostly local fishermen from Portland. They maintained this service until 1915 when the boat was replaced with a new motorised craft. The lifeboat's most outstanding service was to the steamer ADMELLA in 1859 when the ship grounded on a reef off Cape Banks in South Australia, 150 km to the west of Portland. Survivors clung to the rigging in heavy seas for over a week and 89 people lost their lives in the shipwreck. Taken to the scene by the steamer LADY BIRD, the Portland Lifeboat was unable to assist until eight days after the ADMELLA's grounding when the seas abated enough for the lifeboat to manoeuvre close to the ship and rescue the last 19 survivors. Since its retirement in 1915 the lifeboat has been a memorial to those who manned it and those it rescued. For a long period it was on display in the Portland Gardens, first in the open and then under a canopy. In 2008 it was on display inside the Portland Maritime Discovery Centre, still in original condition complete with the rig from 1915.
