Photograph of a Legacy Demonstration at the Melbourne Town Hall. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and eurythmics, the Demonstration was an annual event to showcase their skills. Melbourne Legacy conducted Annual Demonstrations / Parades from 1928 through to the late 1970's, usually held at Melbourne Town Hall or Olympic Pool Stadium. The beautiful costumes were made by members of the Junior Legacy Mothers' Club and the Melbourne Legacy Wives' Association. Whilst the cost to Legacy was very small, the quality of the work produced was truly professional. An Article in The Herald (Melbourne), Friday 19 October 1951, page 5 says: "Children in Legacy show Two hundred children will take part in a Legacy Club demonstration at the Melbourne Town Hall tonight and tomorrow night. They will show the work done in physical training and speech therapy classes. Boys will give gymnastic displays including wrestling and tumbling. Girls will feature costume dances and tableaux. They made the dresses themselves. An article from the Melbourne Legacy Bulletin on the death of Legatee Ken Green (President of Melbourne Legacy in 1981). The Bulletin published articles on Legatees when they passed away. Legatee Green was born in 1917 and died in 1987. More details of his life are outlined in the articles. This is a copy of the address by Dean Thomas at the Memorial Service for Major-General Green at St Andrews Church Brighton. At 02005 is a second articles, 'A Tribute to Legatee Ken Green' written by Legacy. Legatee Ken Green served with the 15th Australian Field Company RAE 2nd AIF during World War 2. He continued with Citizen Military Forces after the war. He attained the rank of Major General with the 3rd Division between 1970-73. He joined Melbourne Legacy in 1959 on the nomination of Legatees Robert Myers and John Standish. The article was part of an album of past presidents from 1965 to 1989. The folder included biographical details and obituaries, eulogies and death notices of prominent Legatees. This document was written to celebrate the 60th birthday of Legatee Leigh Johns in 1983. It is a collection of poems written about L/ Johns by different authors as a tribute to him reaching 60 years of age. Leigh Johns was born in 1923, the date of the founding of Melbourne Legacy, and became a Legatee in 1956, serving on 15 ML Boards and as an executive member of the Legacy Co-ordinating Council . He had a distinguished war record in the RAF during WWII and survived 32 bombing raids over France and Germany. He was an enthusiastic contributor of poetry to the Melbourne Legacy Bulletin which explains why this document is in the form of a poem. He was granted Reserve status in 2001 and died in 2008.The tone of the document reveals the affection with which Leigh Johns was regarded amongst his peers, and illustrates the collegiality which existed in the organisation during his membership.White A4 photocopy paper with black type x 13 pages.'Box 16' on title page. A green tunic made for junior legatees to attend girls' classes. It is in great condition and is an excellent example of the uniforms used at Legacy classes. Throughout the year Melbourne Legacy provided classes for Junior Legatees such as dancing, gymnastics and Eurythmics. Melbourne Legacy would then conduct Annual Demonstrations to showcase their skills. Legacy provided uniforms free of charge for all girls attending the classes. Typical of the time the tunic appears hand made but many mothers and legatee wives would have been capable of making uniforms as they also made many of the costumes for the annual demonstrations. An article from the Melbourne Legacy Bulletin on the death of Legatee Vance Dore (President of Melbourne Legacy in 1965). The Bulletin published articles on Legatees when they passed away. Legatee Ashley Vance Dore, born in 1918 and died in 1986 aged 67 years. During his war service he was with the 2/22nd Infantry Battalion, 8th Division AIF and was sent to Rabaul PNG in 1941. An account of an escape from Rabaul is included in the archives. The article was part of an album of past presidents from 1965 to 1989. Black and white photo of the residents at Holmbush. It was one of the residences that was run by Melbourne Legacy for junior legatees. The residences were run by Melbourne Legacy to take care of children whose fathers had been servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself. The year is not known but it is approximately 1947, and was in an album which was a collection of photos taken in the 1940s and 1950s. The label with the photo says it was taken by Legatee Harry Rigby. Holmbush at 1267 Burke road, was one of the properties that Legacy used for Junior Legatees. It was purchased 1942. The booklet shows important aspects of the Shrine, 'one of the greatest of the war memorials erected in various parts of the world'. 'The purpose of this imposing structure is set out in the simple words quoted on the eastern wall of the Shrine of Remembrance itself- "This memorial was erected by a grateful people to the honoured memory of the men and women of Victoria who served the Empire in the Great War of 1914-18." The booklet outlines parts of the Shrine including the Battle Honour Discs, the Porticos, the Stone of Remembrance, the Inner Shrine, the Crypt and the Ray of Light.
