A 'Sailors & Soldiers Christmas Fund' created by Princess Mary had overwhelming response and so it was decided to give every person 'wearing the King's uniform on Christmas Day 1914' the brass tin along with a Christmas card and a picture of the princess, and items such as pipe, lighter, tobacco, and 20 cigarettes. Non-smokers and boys received a bullet pencil and a packet of sweets. Indian troops often received sweets and spices, and nurses received chocolates. Many of the items were sent separately from the boxes because of lack of space. Not all the tins could be sent out by Christmas and so those sent in January 1915 contained a New Year card. Shortage of brass meant that many did not received their tins until summer 1916, however by January 1919 some still did not receive them. After using up the contents many service people then used the tins to store small items. The brass tin, bullet pencil, and medals belonged to Pte George Nutting of the 2nd London regiment, and regimental number 2080/230442. After World War 1 George Nutting sailed for Melbourne on June 1, 1922 aboard the S.S. Borda. He then lived at several addresses in the Sunshine/Albion area including Dawson St, 32 King Edward Ave, and 15 Kamarooka St. At one stage he was involved in a window cleaning and gardening business, and both he and his wife Janet were very good dancers. George Nutting was also involved in the loyal Sunshine Lodge and was presented with a Past Grand's Collar in 1943. He lived at 15 Kamarooka St until he passed away on March 20th 1979 at the age of 85. Hand drawn by Kerr, Hilda (nee Temple). Daughter of George Temple and Mary McAuslane of Castlemaine, Hilda married James Kerr in 1893 and lived at Lincluden, Raymond Street, Orbost. Her husband, Dr James Kerr, was a Scot who had come to Australia as a ship's doctor and practised in NSW before visiting Orbost on a government vaccination programme. He liked Orbost and returned there, its first doctor, until his death in 1928. Hilda was sometimes referred to as 'Mrs Dr Kerr.' She and her sisters Mabel Stewart Temple and Margaret Ferrie Temple were all talented writers and musicians. This item is associated with Hilda Kerr (Temple) a prominent resident of early Orbost. Warrnambool Cordials was originally established in the early 1920s by the Lescai Brothers who had their cordial business in Fairy Street. A company of local businessmen took over the cordial factory for some time when the Lescai brothers left the city, then it was purchased by a garage proprietor Thomas Hill and in the early 1930s Charles and Frederick Flett purchased the business and carried on for a few years. It was later operated by Thomas McKenzie before it was closed. It was still operating in 1975 when it was manufacturing both Loys and McKenzie’s soft drinks. It is noted that this docket contains the information that the Warrnambool Cordials business was a winner of a Bronze Medal for lemonade at the Royal Show in 1931. The Warrnambool Club, established in 1874 when the Warrnambool Club Hotel in Kepler Street was opened, was a gentlemen’s club. A new Warrnambool Club building was erected in Kepler Street in 1877 and is still in use today. A letter to the President of Melbourne Legacy from a representative of a sub-committee. The pencil mark on top of first page could imply it came from Legatee Stan Savige. Date is not known, the first section refers to a resolution of the Board of Management in 1930. That resolution was 'That members of the Club make every effort to influence trade towards Returned Soldiers in business, particularly fellow members, and accept every opportunity at this juncture to carry this into effect.' The rest of the report is a discussion on the impact of this resolution and how it can be made effective in the working of the Legacy spirit. It is possible the report is incomplete as it ends abruptly on page 5. The notation H12 in red pen shows that it was part of the archive project that was trying to capture the history of Legacy. A document that shows a resolution of the Board of Management in 1930 and it's impact and application being examined by a sub-committee.
