Sarah Shillinglaw was born at River Plenty on November 9, 1854. She married Charles Aldous on June 9, 1880 and died in Prahran, Victoria on August 3, 1925. Photographer Charles Nettleton operated from 1 Madeline St, North Melbourne (later known as Carlton) from 1867-1874.. This photo shows the address as North Melbourne. Sands McDogall Directory listing was revised to Carlton in 1869. This would date photo as 1867-1868 though could be later if printed on on paper stock. They were dressed as the father and mother, two girls, a boy and a baby in a pram. They had to walk from their home in Eltham South to the railway station where the parade commenced and back to Eltham Park (Eltham Lower Park). The family won the Group Section for their entry “Pioneers of Eltham”. The McLean family, Hector John McLean and Louisa Frances (nee Green) and six daughters lived in Eltham during the period 1930 to 1934 inclusive. Lived in the former Evelyn Hotel at the time it was destroyed by fire in 1931. In reminiscences provided by daughter Edith, she recalls that her mother always blamed herself for the fire. When she finished cooking on the old wood stove she would always clean up and take the ashes outside in an ash pan to bury them for safety. She believed she must have dropped some oas she walked across the back verandah or the breeze caiught some sparks as she opened the door. It was a very hot day. She believed that they must have fallen down some cracks in the floor boards and smouldered on papers and rubbish in the cellar. This folder contains 3 copies of photographs plus notes about the Glen Huntly Fire Station: 1/A print of a small black and white photograph (95mm x 127mm) of the exterior of Glen Huntly Fire Station accompanied by typed notes sourced 13/03/2007 from the Melbourne Fire Brigade Museum. The notes indicate that the fire engine shown parked out the front was in service 1919 to circa 1924: Car 55 Rego 8499 Hose Carriage Engine No. 3178 Napier. 2/An A4 sepia copy of the same photograph (210mm x 291mm) with street advertising of one of the shops clearly visible: 'DRAPERY EMPORIUM. UNDERCLOTHING BABY LINEN; HOSIERY HABERDASHERY MILLINERY'. The electric tram at the terminus on Grange Road is also seen in the photograph. This photograph provides a fascinating insight into clothing and deportment in school sport in the late nineteenth century. A significant social record of clothing and deportment in school sport during the late nineteenth century. Sepia toned photograph pasted grey card mount and framed behind glass. Thin wooden frame. Photograph depicts the Ballarat College premiership football club in 1890. Players are in uniform - sleeveless, collarless shirts, knickerbockers, stockings and laced boots or shoes.
