Surfing World, or SW as it is know, first issue appeared Sept 1962. Edited by Bob Evans this monthly magazine was published "in the interests of promoting surfing in Australia and overseas". This issue (Volume 3, Number 3) is one of a series of early 1960's SW's donated as an incomplete collection. SURFING WORLD is still published today and is Australia's oldest surfing magazine.Surfing World was the first major national surfing publication in Australia established in 1962. Its stories and photographs captured the early years of growth of surfing in Australia during the 1960's. During World War II, the RAAF established twelve Elementary Flying Training Schools (EFTS) to meet the rapid demand for pilots in an expanding Air Force.Due to a shortage of pilots, observers, wireless operators and gunners, the Dominions of the Commonwealth agreed to establish a co-ordinate scheme to train 28,000 air crew each year to help England fight the war in Europe. After the second world war there was a decision made to create a memorial for the 1939-45 War at the Shrine. A competition was held and 53 entries assessed. The first prize was shared between two submissions and the third prize money was also awarded. These two documents show that Legatee Kemsley was one of the Assessors who decided the basis of design for the memorial. The notes of a meeting of the Assessors show that Mr W. Balcombe Griffiths, Mr Marcus Martin, Colonel Kemsley and Sir Edmund Herring (Chairman of the Shrine Trustees) were present when the winning design was chosen. The design was later completed as the Forecourt in the shape of a paved cross, built in 1953, and the Cenotaph surmounted by a statuary group and the Eternal Flame. The memorial was dedicated and the flame set alight by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on February 28 1954.A record of the decisions made by the committee that chose the design of the memorial for the 1939-45 war that was built as the Forecourt, the Cenotaph and the Eternal Flame at the Shrine of Remembrance. Postcards were a common form of souvenirs for soldiers who were travelling around Europe either during World War 1 or just after, before returning to Australia. The link to Legacy is not known but there are many postcards are in the collection.Postcards were a very common form of communication in the first World War.
