Sergeant Neil Grant died from bullet wounds in the chest during the battle in Rensburg on 10 February 1900. Private Willson, quick to go to his aid, was killed instantly as he bent over the wounded man. He was well known in Ballarat for his military career and also as an auctioneer. He was 45 years of age, married and father of eight children. Alexander Ross was born in Castlemaine in 1879. He became a member of the 4th Battalion Infantry Brigade and was noted for his soldierly qualities. When volunteers were called for the First Contingent, Mounted Infantry Unit going to South Africa, he was one of the first to enlist. In the Battle at Rensburg he was shot through the chest and died shortly after. Major Eddy and Lieutenant Roberts also died in the same action. About a fortnight before he was killed Corporal Ross had mailed the Queen's Chocolate Box he had received, to his father. In it was a letter which included information "...I am quite well and have not seen action yet. Arthur Coulson had served two years with the Victorian Mounted Rifles when he volunteered for active service. He was in the First Contingent, Mounted Infantry Unit sent to South Africa. He was engaged in scouting duties. Private Coulson contracted enteric fever (typhoid) and died in hospital. His death was the first from disease in the Regiment. Private Stock was a member of the Casterton Detachment, Victorian Mounted Rifles.Thomas and his brother both volunteered for active service in South Africa at the outbreak of war. Private Charles Williams was born in Nalinga and at the age of 16 joined the Victorian Mounted Rifles. He was one of the first from his district to offer his services at the outbreak of war. Private Willson was part of the First Contingent - Mounted Infantry Unit sent to South Africa. He joined the Victorian Mounted Rifles only a few weeks prior to this. During an attack in force by the Boers, at Hobkirk's Farm near Rensburg, he was struck by a ball in the eye and died instantly. He was known to be a brave man and good soldier. He was 23 years old. The Victorian Naturalist is a bimonthly scientific journal covering natural history, especially of Australia. It is published by the Field Naturalists Club of Victoria and is received as part of the membership subscription of that club. From 1881, club proceedings and papers had been published in the Southern Science Record and Magazine of Natural History before the first issue of The Victorian Naturalist appeared in January 1884. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research articles, research reports, "Naturalist Notes", and book reviews. The journal was published monthly until 1976, since then it has been published bimonthly. In that period several special issues have been published. These covered particular natural history topics or significant centenaries: of the club (1980), the death of Ferdinand von Mueller (1996), and the establishment of Wilsons Promontory National Park and Mount Buffalo National Park (1998). The journal was abstracted and indexed by Scopus in 1980 and 1984 and from 2008 to 2014. In 2001 there was a special issue on Sir Frederick McCoy, KCMG who was the first president of the club. Sir Frederick was an Irish paleontologist, zoologist, and museum administrator, active in Australia. He is noted for founding the Botanic Garden of the University of Melbourne in 1856.A journal that is still in publication today from it’s original inception in 1881 as part of a membership subscription to the Field Naturalists Club of Victoria. The author, Charles Loudon Bloxam was Professor of Chemistry in King's College London. Prior to that he was in the Department of Artillery Studies Woolwich and formerly in the Royal Military Academy Woolwich. The book was presented to the Ballarat School of Mines Library in 1873 by Dr Richard Bunce. Bunce was born in 1816 and died in 1885. He was in practice in Ballarat East and at times acted as Coroner. His was buried in the Ballarat Old Cemetery. The book has been translated from the French and from the fourth German edition.
