During the Great Depression from 1929 to 1932, rabbit trapping was a means of survival for many people. Rabbits provided meat and pelts which were sold for making felt hats such as the Akubra. Rabbit populations are controlled in the 21st century by poisoning, destroying or 'ripping' burrows (warrens), biological control with rabbit haemorrhagic disease and myxomatosis, and by shooting. Rabbit-proof fences also prevent the spread of rabbits into some areas. (ref. Powerhouse Museum) This trap was used in the Orbost district. Steel-jawed rabbit traps were widely used in urban and rural Australia from 1880 to 1980. This trap is symbolic of the battle that Australians have waged against burgeoning rabbit populations for over a century. Rabbits cause enormous damage to Australian soils and biodiversity. The introduction of rabbits to this country was an environmental disaster.A rusted iron rabbit trap which consists of a pair of jaws held closed by spring tension and a triggering mechanism. When the trap is triggered the jaws close over the top of the bridge, plate and tongue mechanism that is designed to trigger the trap. A chain is attached by a hook on the bent end of the trap's spring with a long steel spike looped over the last link of the other end of the chain. The trap is designed so that the metal jaws snap shut against each other when the trap is activated by the application of weight to the pressure plate. In use, traps are set with open jaws, buried lightly just below the surface of the earth. When an animal steps on the pressure plate, the jagged teeth of the jaws snap around the animal's leg, usually breaking bone and sinew. Thus the animal is immobilised. rabbit-trap rural

He later married Margaret Larkie in St. James' old Cathedral, Melbourne on 15th September, 1842. They arrived at Hastings in 1860 then came to Phillip Island to live on Block 33, Newhaven in the year 1867. He died 26th January 1905 aged 85. Margaret died 21st June 1907 aged 81. She is also buried in this grave. 466-28: Joseph Bauer: Joseph was the son of our first owner of the Isle of Wight Hotel. His father came to the Island in 1870 and bought a small private house, then added to it in the style of a Swiss House. It became one of the most comfortable hotels in Victoria. Eliza Rutledge (1820-1888) was the daughter of Rupert and Jane (nee Newby) Kirk. She married William Rutledge in St James’ Church, Sydney on 18th August, 1840. She and William had five children, two sons and five daughters. Recorded accounts tell that Eliza was “beloved for her kindness and hospitality” and that she and William kept open house for all manner of social events and occasions. Eliza died at Farnham Park, Dennington, on 31st August 1888. She is buried at Tower Hill Cemetery. The marriage of Eliza to William Rutledge, a man of historical importance in the development of Port Fairy, Warrnambool and the western district of Victoria, places her as a person of importance.Their daughter Susan Fleetwood is also memorialised in a window in Christ Church, Warrnambool. Frederick Henry Laurence Rankin (Laurie) VX 139086 was an Australian Army cook who served from May 1943 to June 1945 within Australia (including Darwin). he was born 24/7/1914 at Jumburra, Victoria and enlisted on 27/5/1943 at Clifton Hill, Victoria. His "Next of Kin" was Eunice Rankin. He was discharged on 4 June, 1945 and he was then posted to 2 Australian Field Artillery Regiment. Two Harris (Blue) trains can be seen in the Hurstbridge storage yard. Full seven coach trains would be stored here at weekends to permit rapid start of weekday services on a Monday. Meanwhile, Single Motor Carriage trains ran the Eltham-Hurstbridge service adequately at weekends. Two single carriages can be seen here. The Harris trains operated in Melbourne 1956-1988. The Melbourne General Cemetery opened in June 1853. The first male buried there was John Alexander Burnett, chief clerk to the mercantile firm of Dalgety, Borradale & Co. During the attack on Polygon Wood Belgium on 20th September 1917 Pte Sandow displayed conspicuous gallantry - He was an operator on Amplification and Power Buzzer Station in a chain of communication and in the enemy barrage he patrolled and repaired lines and earths utterly regardless of personal danger. While in the performance of his duty his leg was shot away. He however completed his task. It was largely due to this man's effort that good communication was maintained. Private Sandow died of wounds on 22 September 1917 and was buried at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery. George and Anne Evans settled in Sunbury in 1836 after migrating to Van Diemens Land from Plymouth in 1825. He took upland along the Jacksons Creek and built his Emu Bottom Homestead. He married Anne, who was forty years younger than him on 11 May 1843 and they had six children. He and his wife Anne are buried in Melbourne General Cemetery in Compartment 'H'.George died on 26 August 1876 and Anne died on 12 January 1893. He died in 1933 and the property passed to his wife and thereafter to their only son Allan Larard Donaldson, born 1917. The house was known as "Goodwood". Kate Amelia Donaldson was a music teacher. The Identification Disc (ID) are worn by soldiers on war like duties. Two disc are worn in such a manner that one can be removed from the necklace without dislodging the other.
