Louise Paramor says, “I just love colour and playing around with it, it makes me feel good. I get a kick out of harmonising colour in conjunction with form. I think if there was more finely tuned colour in the world it would be a better place. There exists a lot of untamed colour in the everyday and to me this is often creates a feeling that is the opposite of uplifting.” In this work, Paramor creates a utopian building from collaged pieces of paper, which have been painted in planes of coloured enamel. Often these collages become sculptures, for which Paramor is mainly known. Andy Gomez writes of Boomtown, “Louise Paramor invites us into her own fabricated domain, where colours are coherent and vivid, buildings are unique and non-conformist, where public sculpture exists for the sake of form, colour, line, and levity. There is an inherent optimism at work here, exalting the accomplishments and ingenuity of the urban sprawl and the enforced participation of a shared culture and experience that offers.”

The picture above shows the procession headed by the Children of Mary in Bourke-street and turning into Spring-street, in front of Parlia ment House. An initiative of the Roman Catholic Church, it was their contribution to Melbourne’s Centenary Celebrations. 200,000 Catholics resided in Melbourne at this time – one quarter of the city’s population. While the Congress was aimed at Catholics, and acted as an opportunity to reinforce their living faith and homage, it contained a variety of events of splendour, solemnity and significance designed to appeal to Melbournians, and would additionally provide incentive for people to travel to Victoria, thereby creating an economic benefit to the state. The Procession of the Blessed Sacrament concluded the week-long Congress. Commencing at St Patrick’s Cathedral, it covered a two-mile route via Gisborne, Collins, Elizabeth and Bourke streets, then to Victoria Parade, where a final benediction was pronounced by Cardinal MacRory from the balcony of Mount St. Evin’s Hospital (today the site of St Vincent’s Private Hospital). An estimated 100,000 took part. This is the afternoon procession concluding the Catholic Church’s National Eucharistic Congress in Melbourne - a procession of the Blessed Eucharist through the Melbourne city. The Children of Mary Sodalities was a religious body which aimed at fostering in its members an ardent devotion, reverence, and filial love towards the Blessed Virgin Mary, initially embracing the pupils and orphans of the schools and institutions of the Sisters of Charity of St Vincent de Paul. In 1847, Blessed Pius IX affiliated them to the Jesuit Roman Sodality. They were distinguished by a medal suspended from a blue ribbon, and once a fully-fledged a Child of Mary wore a distinctive blue cape. On the extreme right foreground of the photo can be seen an intriguing piece of artistic design – a tiered pole. Thomas Richard Flood served as Mayor of the City of Bendigo four times during his time as councillor; 1952 - 53, 1957 - 58, 1966 - 67 and 1968 - 69. Thomas Flood was born and educated in Bendigo and was a business man who owned and operated a bus company in the Bendigo District. He was also a professional cyclist and was involved in the development of the City's sporting facilities. The Tom flood Sports Centre on Barnard Street is named after him. Monica Cecelia Flood, nee Murray was born in Strathfieldsaye and together they had two sons. As Mayoress Monica Flood was patron of the Bendigo Girl Guides and involved with the Peter Harcourt Centre and Mirridong. Timber sign. Prior to the election of female Councillors and Mayors, the Mayoress role was one of the few ways women could officially undertake civic duties and Mayoress's played an important role in civic life through charity work, even stepping in on occasions to undertake Mayoral duties. Anne Galvin O.B.E. was born Anne Edith Ruby in 1903 and was one of Bendigo's best known charity workers. She used her first speech as Mayoress to indicate her intentions to do something for mothers and children and it was mainly through her efforts as president of the National Council of Women that Bendigo received the appointment of the two first women police officers in 1956 (1). Anne Galvin was the second woman in Bendigo to be elected to the Bendigo City Council in the 1960's, retiring after six years on Council in 1973. Robert John Couper (born 1871) was Emerald's first butcher, establishing his butchery c. 1900 and soon taking up a position near the corner of Main Street and Emerald-Monbulk Road. He operated the business until the Madigan family took over in 1919. This cart was used for transportation by the business.This photograph captures a major early Emerald business; it is also a good example of transportation in the early 20th century.This item is a black-and-white photograph depicting two horses and horsecart. The cart has four spoked wooden wheels and a painted label advertising R. J. Couper. A man stands behind the cart, placing items into it. Sally Hearn (1932–2018) was a dedicated button collector and a prominent member of the Victoria Button Collectors Club. Her button collection was featured as a primary display in the 'The Melbourne Story' exhibition at the Melbourne Museum, which opened in mid-2008.The Hearn Collection of locally made and international buttons is historically and aesthetically significant as it illustrates the textile and manufacturing history of button making.This item consists of fourteen round glass buttons mounted on a rectangular brown card. Ten buttons have a tan-coloured ground with a painted pictorial design in white, brown and blue, depicting a small building or house with a landscape. Four buttons are painted blue and feature a moulded or impressed surface design. This plaque commemorated the October 16th, 1965 opening of a new pavilion at Emerald Recreation Reserve (now known as Worrell Reserve). The pavilion was opened by Mr William Archibald Borthwick, at that time a member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly representing the electorate of Scoresby. It was built to serve the needs of local sports teams including the Emerald Cricket Club. The 1965 pavilion was replaced in 2021.This plaque commemorates a now-renovated building playing an important role in facilitating sporting and recreation in the local community over more than five decades.A rectangular wooden plaque, with partially faded text painted on one side in a landscape orientation.
