A photo of the front exterior of the Rheumatism and Arthritis Association of Victoria Opportunity Shop, situated at 1428 High St, Malvern. There is an article on page 2 of the Vol 13, June 1979 edition of RAAV's News Review titled, "R.A.A.V. to open our own opportunity shop". Written by Vice President, Elva Renfrew, members and friends of RAAV are invited to donate goods and join a roster of volunteers who will staff the op shop once it opens. A second article appears on page 3 of the following issue of News Review, Vol 15, December 1979. Titled, "HERE'S OUR SHOP", it dates the opening of the Malvern Op Shop as being Monday, the 8th of October, 1979. A similar photo to this one accompanies that article, with a Christmas tree visible in the front display window of the shop. The article states that the opening of the shop was "launched by the Lady Mayor of Malvern, Counsellor [sic] Morrow, who presented us with a cheque." The newsagency on one side of the opportunity shop displays advertisements for 'The Sun' and 'The Age' newspapers. Two bill posters inside wire cages advertise the latest newspaper headlines. One contains the headline, "LIBS DEFY FRASER", referring to the Liberal Party and their leader, the Prime Minister at the time, Malcolm Fraser. The other headline is, "THE LIFE OF BILLY HUGHES". This headline most likely refers to the 2nd volume of a biography on the life of Australia's 7th Prime Minister, William Morris Hughes, by L. F. On the window glass, the words "OPPORTUNITY SHOP" are painted in blue, in a tapered design. The double front doors are also painted in the same blue, and on one door, the text "RHEUMATISM AND ARTHRITIS ASSOCIATION OF VICTORIA", "ACTION HOUSE YARRA BOULEVARD KEW 3101 Phone 862 2555" are painted in white. Below this, the numbers "1428" (the street number of the building) is also painted in white. Behind the window, various items are on display. Inside the window, near the doors, a handwritten paper sign has been affixed which says, "OPENING MONDAY 10:30". To the left of the shop, there is a newsagency (partially obscured). Above the window, and beneath the verandah, there is the text (partially obscured), "...e Sun" with a picture of a rooster between the two words. At the top of the window, there is a sign containing the text, "THE AGE". Two bill posters inside wire cages are affixed to the wall. One says, "The AGE", "LIBS DEFY FRASER". Louise Paramor says, “I just love colour and playing around with it, it makes me feel good. I get a kick out of harmonising colour in conjunction with form. I think if there was more finely tuned colour in the world it would be a better place. There exists a lot of untamed colour in the everyday and to me this is often creates a feeling that is the opposite of uplifting.” In this work, Paramor creates a utopian building from collaged pieces of paper, which have been painted in planes of coloured enamel. Often these collages become sculptures, for which Paramor is mainly known. Andy Gomez writes of Boomtown, “Louise Paramor invites us into her own fabricated domain, where colours are coherent and vivid, buildings are unique and non-conformist, where public sculpture exists for the sake of form, colour, line, and levity. There is an inherent optimism at work here, exalting the accomplishments and ingenuity of the urban sprawl and the enforced participation of a shared culture and experience that offers.”

The picture above shows the procession headed by the Children of Mary in Bourke-street and turning into Spring-street, in front of Parlia ment House. Right (top) — The procession leaving the starting point at St. Patrick's Cathedral and below, the Papal Legate carrying the Host under a canopy borne by a guard of laymen and preceded by white-clad girls scattering rose leaves, incense bearers and the Papal Chamberlains in their Spanish uniforms. An initiative of the Roman Catholic Church, it was their contribution to Melbourne’s Centenary Celebrations. 200,000 Catholics resided in Melbourne at this time – one quarter of the city’s population. While the Congress was aimed at Catholics, and acted as an opportunity to reinforce their living faith and homage, it contained a variety of events of splendour, solemnity and significance designed to appeal to Melbournians, and would additionally provide incentive for people to travel to Victoria, thereby creating an economic benefit to the state. The Procession of the Blessed Sacrament concluded the week-long Congress. Commencing at St Patrick’s Cathedral, it covered a two-mile route via Gisborne, Collins, Elizabeth and Bourke streets, then to Victoria Parade, where a final benediction was pronounced by Cardinal MacRory from the balcony of Mount St. Evin’s Hospital (today the site of St Vincent’s Private Hospital). An estimated 100,000 took part. Onlookers line Swanston Street, some standing at the entrance to Tate’s Tea House – a well-known Melbourne landmark located in the basement of the Manchester Unity Building. This is the afternoon procession concluding the Catholic Church’s National Eucharistic Congress in Melbourne - a procession of the Blessed Eucharist through the Melbourne city. It commenced at St Patrick’s Cathedral, and covered a two mile route via Gisborne, Collins, Elizabeth and Bourke streets, then to Victoria Parade where a final benediction was pronounced by the Cardinal from the balcony of Mount St. Evin’s Hospital (present day St Vincent’s Private Hospital). The people lining the streets a men in suits and hats, women in coats and hats, and children in their “Sunday best”, kneeling beside the road, many with their hands clasped in front of them. The small girls ahead of the canopy covering the Host are pale-blue clad, white veiled Children of Mary Sodalists, who strew rose petals to pave the way of the Cardinal carrying the jewelled Monstrance (Blessed Sacrament of consecrated Host (bread)), together with church heirarchy wearing scarlet robes. Behind came incense bearers and the Papal Chamberlains in their Spanish uniforms, followed by a guard of honour of laymen of the city and country parishes. The Children of Mary Sodalities was a religious body which aimed at fostering in its members an ardent devotion, reverence, and filial love towards the Blessed Virgin Mary, initially embracing the pupils and orphans of the schools and institutions of the Sisters of Charity of St Vincent de Paul. In 1847, Blessed Pius IX affiliated them to the Jesuit Roman Sodality. They were distinguished by a medal suspended from a blue ribbon, and once a fully-fledged a Child of Mary wore a distinctive blue cape. On the extreme right foreground of the photo can be seen an intriguing piece of artistic design – a tiered pole.
