According to the paper label "Over 300 Legatees participated in the ANZAC Day march commemorating Legacy's 70th Anniversary." The photo shows the Legatees marching along St Kilda Road past the Melbourne Concert Hall. (See also 00754, 00755, 00788). Some of these photos were published in the May edition of The Answer. The article mentioned that the Anzac Day Commemoration Council allowed Legacy to march as a contingent because of Legacy's 70th Anniversary. President John Stevenson led the contingent of over 300 Legatees. All of the marchers received a sprig of rosemary as a gift from Legacy (and thanks to the widows that prepared them). "Strathtulloh, 1402-1600 Greigs Road, Melton South, is significant as an early property in Victoria, retaining different eras of pioneering dwellings, ranging from a ruin to a fine Colonial style homestead. The property has close historical association with the early settlement of the Melton district, and was owned by the Henty family in the 1840s. The Strathtulloh property was alienated by the Crown in 1840 to Charles James Garrard, who sold it in 1848 to Charles and Stephen Henty, whose sister Jane and her husband Samuel Bryan lived there in the late 1840s. In 1853 the property then passed to William Tulloh, after whom the homestead was named. A primitive bluestone ruin of near the Toolern Creek, built of vesicular bluestone and mud mortar, is of unknown origin. It has commonly been assumed to pre-date 1840, and to have belonged to the original holder of the Exford lease, Dr Watton or Port Phillip Association member Dr Cotterill. This is unlikely, as the 1841 census records Dr Watton, and everyone else in the district, as living in a ‘wood’ dwelling. It may instead have been the residence of Garrard, and the Bryans, in the 1840s and an early map names a site near here as ‘Bryan’s outstation’. It is assumed that the two-level stone building that became the kitchen is the earliest intact building on the site, and was the first homestead; it is likely to date to the 1840s or 1850s. The main homestead is a substantial villa constructed of random coursed bluestone, with a verandah facing three sides, attic bedrooms with dormer windows, a fan light over the front door, a hipped roof originally clad in slate, and a large cellar. Although demonstrating characteristics of pioneering construction, such as unworked log beams, pit sawn beams, hand-sawn lintels and colonial door locks, documentary evidence shows that it was built c.1869. The homestead has now been structurally repaired and decoratively restored; a sympathetic new semi-detached rear extension was added in the early years of the 21st century. The Premier, Sir Henry Bolte, the Victorian governors wife and daughter, and a retired ambassador to Germany visited the Summerland Peninsula, including the Nobbies and Penguin Parade during the 1960s.The article clearly shows that the government of the day felt the Penguin Parade was of great importance to the Victorian economy. The Country Women’s Association of Victoria was formed 12 March 1928 and today has over 5,600 members. Its original aim was to improve conditions by community service, more especially as they affect the welfare of women and children. The Wodonga CWA branch was formed in 1934 and has been an active group in the community until the present day. The CWA provided gathering opportunities for rural women and quickly became renowned for their street stalls, catering at Agricultural Shows and social events including debutante balls, handicraft classes and cooking demonstrations. Today they have become even more than that, participating in and organising a wide range of activities and initiatives in the community, always with the focus of service to others. The CWA is of significance on a local, state and national level as a critical service group. They conduct a range of social, educational and services throughout Australia with an initial focus on the support of rural women and children. This image shows motorbike despatch riders who were tasked with transporting intercepted Japanese communications from the wartime wireless receiving station established in Chesterville Road, Moorabbin to Queens Road, St Kilda where the Directorate of Naval Communications and the code-breaking unit called FRUMEL (Fleet Radio Unit - Melbourne) were housed. The despatch riders would travel every two hours, all day and night. The wireless receiving station was established in Moorabbin because it was considered an area free of significant electrical interference and was not too far afield from the Melbourne headquarters in Queens Road. Moorabbin was originally established as a rural market gardening community.A secret wartime wireless receiving station was established in March 1942 in Chesterville Road, Moorabbin. The station was established on requisitioned market garden properties, and soon housed WRAN (Women's Royal Australian Navy) personnel and up to 35 US Navy servicemen. The Navy personnel intercepted Japanese coded communications and then despatched these by motorbike riders to Queens Road, St Kilda where the Directorate of Naval Communications and the code-breaking unit called FRUMEL (Fleet Radio Unit - Melbourne) were housed. The information intercepted by the wireless receiving station helped shape the Allied response to Japan's advances in the Pacific. Declassified defence records show that this unprepossessing station handled some of World War II's most sensitive secrets, and the despatch riders were a familiar sight in the Moorabbin area, though few were aware of their purpose. Photograph of a group of Legatees or Junior Legatees on horses on a polo field in Coldstream. Apparently Melbourne Legacy would have an annual event of a polo tournament. It is not known if it was with the junior legatees or as a social outing for the Legatees. It is possible that it is the same day out as the joyride over Melbourne from a regional airfield (at 01016) if the airfield was in the Yarra Valley. Photographs of handicap dependents at enjoying music and dance from a military band that featured in an edition of the Answer. There were frequent events and activities organised by Melbourne Legacy for handicapped dependents. The Junior Legatees, with many mums and friends of Legacy went to the Defence Force School at Watsonia Barracks and were treated to a performance by the 2/10 Medium Regiment Band. The Bandmaster was WOI Dave Farrell and there was a surprise visit by a clown. According to the article "Former JL Sharon Taylor, now a corporal with 'Visits Protocol and Ceremonial' at the Defence Centre - Melbourne, gave a moving tribute to Legacy in recognition of the support she had received as a young girl. Junior Legatees were given an opportunity to play some of the musical instruments and the enjoyment is evident as the photos show." Nearing the 60th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings The Herald newspaper interviewed former light horsemen including Legatees Rex Hall and Bill Scott. The caption says Sir Thomas White was the 3rd President of Melbourne Legacy. He had also been the Australian High Commissioner in Britain until 1956, so he was soon to return to Australia. A special luncheon was held for World War I widows as a lead up to "Legacy Week". Legatees dressed up as moustached waiters to add a bit of humour to the day. Legatees include L/- Lucky Luscombe and L/- George Woodward as waiters and L/- Salty Saltmarsh making a speech. Due to its success it was held for a number of years. The note with these photos says it was 1996. And the widow featured in Answer article in October 1996 is in these photos wearing the knitted beret. The WWI group would meet on the 2nd Thursday of each month at 11 at Legacy House for many years until their numbers dwindled. For many years Legacy had a "Back to Caulfield Race Day" for Legatees, widows and their families. 1995 was the 50th anniversary of the end of World War 2 and the race day was part of the "Australia Remembers" commemorations. Also a Legacy 'Lone Pine' was planted. The article in the Answer says: "Over 800 members of the Legacy family (past and present) reunite at the "Australia Remembers" Back to Caulfield Commemorative Race Day held on August 12th. It was a special day which incorporated a wide range of activities, including a display of military vehicles, a flyover, a parachute jump by the Red Berets, military bands, and displays of memorabilia when the racecourse was used as an army camp. An official ceremony also included the presentation of a Legacy 'Lone Pine' (a descendant of the Gallipoli 'Lone Pine') by the President of the Melbourne Legacy, Legatee David Millie, which was very warmly received by the Chairman of the V.A.T.C., Mr Peter Lawrence. A note that Legatee Frank Doolan wrote to capture an encounter with a widow. "Mrs Nora Sennett, a cousin of the late Sir Stanley Savige recently wrote to enquire of the whereabouts of the oil painting which had been presented by her late husband to Legacy on the occasion when Stan Savige had opened an exhibition of his work in the Athenaeum Gallery. Mrs Sennett was visited at her new domicile in the MECWA block of single units in Warner St Malvern, and was assured that the painting was well cared for and was hung in a prominent place in Melbourne Legacy Comradeship Corner. She is one of our senior widows now aged 87, and was one of a family of five girls, all of whom are still living and who were one of the early families of Korumburra. Mrs Sennett explained how her late husband, who served with the 39th Battalion (EGGS ARE COOKED) was with General McNicoll on the site of the painting at Passchendaele. and the General remarked that he should paint the scene some day. It certainly captures the atmosphere of devastation caused by artillery barrage, and emphasises the duck boards which were initiated by the AIF to help communication over the blasted terrain of mud, and shell holes of Flanders Fields. FJD' Was with other memorabilia that has come from Frank Doolan from both his war service and his time with Legacy. He was on the archive committee and made attempts to collate the history of Legacy. This note shows that there was a painting of Passchedale painted by Stan Savige's cousin and donated to Legacy. A Legacy ceremony at the Shrine of Remembrance. One of the annual "Anzac Commemoration Ceremony for Students" events, usually held just prior to ANZAC Day. The ceremony provides a valuable opportunity for students to gain an appreciation of the Anzac spirit, the significance of the Shrine and the meaning of Anzac Day. The photos shows a crowd of school children facing the forecourt of the Shrine with many assembled on the steps. It appears there was a flagpole erected in the forecourt. The photos were in an envelope from The Argus and The Australian newspaper, addressed to Legatee Gillespie. Items were in an envelope with other photos and programmes from different School Student ceremonies.
