Singer began to market its machines internationally in 1855. They began mass-producing domestic electric machines in 1910. Treadle machines were powered mechanically by a foot pedal that is pushed back and forth by the operator's foot. There were also machines belt powered, hand powered and eventually electric powered. Treadle machines were made into the 1950s but they were most common during the late Victorian years (up to 1901). This machine is c1894.This machine was owned and used by a resident of the Kiewa Valley. Historical look (early 20th century) at the administrative requirements for the running of a small country school. The level of accountability was limited to a monthly report and a visit from the District Inspector. This was still in the era where paper reporting was utmost and faster electronic reporting had still to be implemented.The significance of this register is that it highlights the need in the early 1900s for travelling time, to and from, the duties required at a small country town to be detailed closely for a bureaucracy that was relatively isolated within the larger cities of Australia. Decentralisation of not only government but also of industry had not as yet entered the Australian environment. This register also shows that the written word was clearly hand scribed and thereby a more personal form of communication. This item is a cheap Penny Whistle made in Thailand Circa 1955. The item was one of the first wave of imports from the growing Asian steel producers. This was an era where cheaper Asia based steel companies did not compete against the stronger, and well established Australian ones. This Penny Whistle was "roughly" made and possibly purchased by the Victorian Education Department for use in school bands and music classes. Schools within the Kiewa Valley would have used them to integrate students the fundamentals of reading music and playing basic musical scores. Later conversion from steel to plastics would have been more conducive to multiple users in a classroom environment (more hygienic and rust proof.This item shows how the "cheaper" invasion of all types of manufactured goods from the Asian regions have altered the purchasing patterns of rural Australians(the more traditional consumer). Roll of negatives of the Eltham Festival Parade as it progresses along Main Road past the Catholic Church heading towards Bridge Street. Floats included the Tasmanian Wilderness Society with the Save the Franklin River campaign, and Diamond Valley Railway celebrating 21 years of passenger service as well as the Victorian Police Marching Band. A well known Eltham identity, Jock Read was asked to lead the Eltham Pony Club contingent that year and the roll includes several shots of Jock on his horse, Lofty who was approximately ten years of age, his colour was still classed as a steel grey at the time before he went "white" quite a few years later. 1982: 16-17 October. “Pioneers of Eltham” and tractor (rain) Neswletter No. 27, November 1982 Although our parade entry did not win a prize this year, it was considered highly successful from a participation point of view. Despite some uncertainty as to just who was coming, members and friends kept appearing at the assembly area. As in the past years our friends from the Victorian Folk Music Club brought their instruments along and really added to the occasion. This year we concentrated on a rural theme with a tractor/trailer combination. Thanks to Peter Bassett-Smith for the tractor, Joh Ebeli for the decorations and friendly trailer owner Dennis McKay. Unfortunately the closing stages of the parade were marred by heavy rain. We just finished as the rain started but members scattered very quickly. This has prompted the suggestion for future parades that we have a tent or other suitable venue for members to gather after the event. This is worth following up. The Church was built by George Stebbings in the 1850s and is an example of fine craftmanship. This book contains verses written by Tilly Aston. Matilda Ann (Tilly) Aston was a blind writer and teacher who was born in Carisbrook, Victoria in 1873. She became totally blind at the age of seven. She learned Braille and gained her Matriculation Certificate, spending a short time at Melbourne University. She helped to establish the Victorian Association of Braille Writers and to found the Association for the Advancement of the Blind. She was the first Secretary and later President of the latter association. She was appointed the Head of the School for the Blind in Melbourne and retired from this position in 1925. She published several books of verse and prose. There is a Parliamentary electorate in Victoria called Aston. This book is of considerable interest because the author, Tilly Aston, has an important place in Australian literature. The book, ‘Maiden Verses’ has a local Warrnambool connection as it contains a poem written about Warrnambool, a town which Tilly Aston visited on occasions.This is a hard cover book of 146 pages. It is a book of poems written by Tilly Aston. The cover is dark red with the printing on the spine and on the cover in gold lettering. There is at least one page at the front of the book torn out. There is a receipt for the purchase of the book pasted on to the inside of the front cover. The date of the receipt made out to ‘John F. Watts’ is for three shillings and sixpence (1900). These Victorian Almanacs were published from 1859 to 1916. They contained information of interest to all Victorians, especially historians, businessmen, farmers and gardeners and must have sold many copies in Warrnambool, particularly before the local Warrnambool Standard Almanacs began publication in 1875. These booklets are of interest as examples of 19th century almanacs published in Victoria. They are also somewhat similar to the Almanacs published annually by the Warrnambool Standard newspaper from 1875 to 1930. The 1869 Almanac is of particular interest as it has on the front cover the printed name of James Hider, stationer and bookseller of Warrnambool. James Hider had been a carpenter, a land agent and a rate collector before opening a shop in Timor Street, selling books and stationery and operating a Circulating Library. In 1865 Hider set up as a photographer and was still operating this business in 1878. He was active in community organizations, including the Mechanics Institute, the Fire Brigade, the National School, the Musical Group and the Benevolent Society. He was also a Councillor and a Mayor in the 1860s. It is interesting to note that his name does not appear to have been been added to the 1869 Almanac cover but is part of the original printing. These are two soft cover booklets of 60 pages each. The back covers of both are missing and the 1868 booklet has some back pages missing. The 1868 Almanac has a black and white cover with ornamental scrolls and the 1869 booklet has a red, green black and cream cover with an ornamental border and images of flora and fauna. The 1869 Almanac cover has a Coat of Arms with Advance Australia printed at the bottom of it. The 1869 Almanac also has a map of Victoria as an insert. Both almanacs contain an historical calendar, Victorian Parliamentary information, data on Victorian cities, postal regulations, farmers’ and gardeners’ guides etc. Both contain advertisements relevant to Melbourne. This is a Reading Book of the Irish National Board of Education adapted for use in schools in Victoria, Australia. Irish School Readers were used in Victoria under the National School System in the 1850s and continued to be used in the 1860s and 70s under the Common School System and the introduction of the State School System after 1872. Readers produced in Victoria for Australian children did not become prominent until the 20th century (School Papers 1898 and Victorian Readers 1928). The signature of Hugh Adams in this book indicates that the book may have come from one of the Adams families farming in the Wangoom area near Warrnambool. There were several boys in these families named Hugh and it is unclear which one owned this book. This book is of interest as an early school reader used in the Warrnambool area and as a book belonging to a member of a local Adams family in the 19th century.This is a hard cover book of 285 pages. It has a brown cover with the title and ornamentation etched into the cover. The book contains prose extracts and poetry with the extracts headed by the derivation and pronunciation of some of the words in the text. There are a few illustrations and sketches. Some of the illustrations have been coloured and scribbled on. The book has been bound with string and glue with the lower portion of the spine cover missing. This book, a sequel to ‘The Swiss Family Robinson’ by Henry Frith, was a prize given to Frank Ward in 1901. His school, the Warrnambool Academy, was established in 1899 by Richard Lawson and William Oakley and was eventually situated at ‘Upton’ in Canterbury Road, Warrnambool. The Academy later incorporated the former Scott’s Warrnambool College and Stanley’s Warrnambool Grammar School. This private school closed in 1911. William Oakley later joined the Victorian Education Department and Richard Lawson had a distinguished academic career in teacher education in Melbourne and New Zealand. No details are available on Frank Ward. This is a hard cover book of 295 pages. The cover is dark blue with gold printing and ornamental gold borders on the front cover and spine. The book has an introductory chapter, 28 chapters of story and an Epilogue. In the back pages there are lists of other books published by Ward, Lock and Co. The book contains many black and white illustrations. There are two blue stamps of the Warrnambool & District Historical Society and on the first page a flyleaf from the Warrnambool Academy printed with gold print and borders and with handwriting in black ink. Henry Longfellow (1807-1882) was an American poet, the most popular one of his day. With poems such as ‘Paul Revere’s Ride’ he helped shape the American character. He was also popular in the British Empire countries and many people in places such as Warrnambool would have had a copy of his published works. The recipient of this volume, Albert Henry Lawson, was the son of Thomas and Susan Lawson, shopkeepers in Warrnambool in the 1870s and 80s. Albert Lawson became a pupil teacher in Cobden in 1903 and from 1904 to 1907 it appears that he was an assistant teacher at his brother’s school, Warrnambool College. This was a private school established by Richard Lawson and William Oakley in 1900. Albert Lawson was given the copy of Longfellow’s poems when he left Warrnambool College in 1907. He then embarked on a teaching career with the Victorian Education Department, married Susan Oakley, the daughter of William Oakley, and died in Melbourne in 1972.This beautiful book of Longfellow poems is worth keeping as an example of an antiquarian book. But it is most significant because of its inscription, telling us of its association with both the Lawson and Oakley Warrnambool College and Albert Lawson, a member of the Lawson family which had many members important in Warrnambool’s history. The inscription tells us that Albert Lawson worked as a teacher for some years at his brother’s school, a fact that was not fully documented until the acquisition of this book. This is a leather bound book of 698 pages. The cover is mottled brown in a raised pattern and the pages are edged with a red-gold tinge. The insides of the cover are edged with a red and gold border and have a blue, brown and cream mottled pattern. There is a sketch of Longfellow in the front with a tissue page covering the sketch. The pages of the book are of fine paper typical of a late Victorian publication. The book has a thin blue ribbon page marker which has become detached from the book. Teachers from all across Victoria enlisted in the Australian Imperial Army to fight overseas. 752 from the Victorian Education Department are listed as signing up. Many were teachers but also included were clerical staff, medical officers. Included in the book are details of the contributions made by others through donations of "comfort items" and subscriptions. There are details of The Young Workers' Patriotic Guild, the war savings effort in the schools and general school subscriptions. 703.1 was presented to Jarrahmond School and 703.2 to Corringle School. Neither school exists today. This is a photograph of Bruce Evans, Member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly, signing the visitors' book at the Orbost High School Golden Jubilee in 1962. In 2012, Orbost Secondary College and the wider community celebrated 100 years of secondary education in Orbost. With earlier levels of schooling available at the Orbost State School or nearby schools of Newmerella and Jarrahmond School, it was not until April 1912, and after much campaigning from parents and other notable community members, that the Orbost Higher Elementary School was opened. Mr Richard Trembath was appointed the new Head teacher of Orbost Higher Elementary School and was assisted by Miss Olga Hirst. The senior class consisted of 26 pupils, and the junior class, 16 pupils. A limited curriculum was available which included lessons in Latin, Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Geography, History, Drawing and advanced English. The Victorian Readers, one for each of the grades that then comprised the primary school, were first published by the Victorian Education Department between 1927 and 1930. Much of content of these readers was British in origin but there was an attempt to add the works of some Australian authors. This book was owned and used by Roma Cameron. Roma Cameron was the daughter of Harry Purchase Cameron and Lilian Gladys (nee Harding). Roma married Ronald Richard Smith in 1944 and is the mother of Lorraine (Mrs Peter Coulton) and Margaret Smith. Harry's father, James Cameron, came to Bellagoogan on Majors Creek in 1882. Bellagoogan was on Majors Creek near Orbost and was the site of the first race course. Like many others at the time, the Camerons bred race horses.Harry died in 1964 aged 75. Roma was the youngest of three siblings: Jean (Mrs John Gavin (Jack) Ralston) and James (Jim) (m. Joan Hosack). This is historically significant showing what young children were reading during the 1920's and 30's in schools across Victoria. It is vastly different to readers used in schools today. This book was used by Orbost Shire Council at the "Back to Orbost" celebrations in 1937 and again in 1963. The item was donated to Orbost & District Historical society from P.R.O.V. as a Place of Deposit (POD) item for safe keeping by a local history group or museum. The book was presented to the president, Jacob Perry, as a token of esteem and in appreciation of his interest and services to the movement. Jacob Perry was an Orbost farmer. Born 1874. Died 1950. He was a Boer War veteran , 4th Victorian Imperial Bushmen. He was a shire councillor and worker for school affairs. The book was used again on Friday, 8th March to Saturday, 16th March 1963.This item is a record of an early Orbost celebration and a useful reference tool.A green covered hard back visitors' book with a red spine and gold lettering on the front cover. A Mechanics’ Institute hall was constructed in 1885 and opened as Orbost's first library. It was situated in Browning Street, Orbost. The hall is still in use today as a community venue. Mechanics' Institutes are the forerunners of public libraries and adult education in Australia. The origin of mechanics' institutes is attributed to Dr George Birkbeck, who in 1799 gave a series of free lectures for the working men of Glasgow. At the time, 'mechanic' meant artisan, tradesman or working man. The movement spread quickly throughout the British Empire. The first Victorian Mechanics' Institute was the Melbourne Mechanics' Institute established in 1839. From the 1850s, Mechanics' Institutes quickly spread throughout Victoria wherever a hall or library, or a school was needed. This ledger was used by the Orbost Mechanics' Institute from 1884 until 1926. The item was donated to Orbost & District Historical society from P.R.O.V. as a Place of Deposit (POD) item for safe keeping by a local history group or museum.The Mechanics' Institute was a very early feature of the Orbost community. The building became a community facility used for a variety of essential civic needs in particular a library. It also provided a suitable venue for community social requirements and functions.A heavy minute book with faded black covers and brown binding.
