Record - vinyl based with paper card jacket and plastic record cover - 331/3 rpm microgroove vinyl record, or "LP", titled "Destination City". Jacket has a stylised view of the intersection of Flinders and Swanston Streets and Flinders St railway station with W2 233 in the top right hand corner. On the rear are extensive details of each of the 11 recording tracks featuring various trams around Melbourne. The vinyl disk itself has a blue label with the title, speed and side number. Produced and recorded by Ormond Slater and Ewen Cameron in 1969 with the assistance of the Australasian Post and the TMSV. A four motor bogie drop centre combination tram of the Melbourne W2 class. Body built by the James Moore and Co. of South Melbourne as a W2 class tram. Delivered to the MMTB Preston Workshops where the electrical and mechanical equipment was fitted. Issued to traffic 18/4/1928. Allocated to Essendon Depot. The tram was part of the Transporting Art project suggested by the artist Clifton Pugh (1924-1990) in Jan. 1978 to the Lord Mayor of Melbourne Cr. Irvin Rockman. The concept was enthusiastically supported by Victorian Premier Rupert Hamer. Clifton Pugh's tram was the second tram to appear. Described by the artist as "The apostle birds in flight, as if the tram has run into a group of them and they're flying along the sides. Then I found the route was to be through Collingwood and Hawthorn football territory and one cannot be one-eyed in that worlds, there are a magpie and a hawk on each side." The tram was retained by the State and stored until 2015 when it was transported to the Museum's Offsite store. Formal ownership was transferred to the Museum during 2019. Conservation planning for the tram's return to service and the restoration of the artwork is underway. 1986 - withdrawn from service following a minor accident and stored. In 2015 tram relocated to the Museum's offsite store and during 2019 transferred to ownership of the Museum. See btm.org.au/trams/504.html for further detail. Photograph shows W2 class tram 567 in Art Tram livery possibly at the Simpson St sidings. Large wording on one side reads "Mother Knows" with a Japanese naval ensign or flag painted between the words, possibly cover a third word. The artist was Peter Corrigan, the work using the Japanese flag created controversy at the time. The second and third photos show the flag covered over. The tram was subsequently repainted during 1978. From the Museum's webpage on Transporting Art: "Peter Corrigan’s cheeky No. 567 created an international incident – the Japanese Embassy lodged a diplomatic protest over his use of their naval ensign with the enigmatic slogan ‘Mother Knows’. The tram was hurriedly withdrawn, and the offending flags were quickly overpainted before No. 567 re-entered traffic. By report, Corrigan was less than impressed by this act of official censorship. Even in its adulterated form, No. 567 did not last, as it was overpainted in 1982". Was to be filled out prior to the commencement of journey and placed in the clip provided. Has space for date, punch mar, each fare time and Signature and Number. Both have punch marks .1 - Used 11-8-1935, possibly on a cable car, signed at R. Elliott, completed in pencil, car 476. Framed three part photograph of tram W2 439 painted by Stewart Merritt, showing the tram along its length. Each photograph along the length of the tram individually presented, but not necessarily lining up. The original prints were scanned and reprinted, but they continue to show the damage. Frame wooden frame, with paper backing and wire hanging strips, clips and felt bumpers in the bottom corners. Was originally framed with a wood half round section, painted brown, glazed, with non-acid free cardboard surround and paper backing but has suffered extensive water damage both to the cardboard and the individual photographs themselves. The photographs were in a deteriorated condition. The item was unglazed at the time of the donation. The Museum had the photographs rescanned and remounted. Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born on 2 August 1901. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. The Frank Wright Medal at the Royal South Street competition is awarded to an individual recognized as making an outstanding contribution to brass music in Australia.An addressed envelope which is addressed to Frank Wright and a sheet of paper which is a letter from The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music.On the top left hand corner of the envelope is "The Associated Board of The Royal Schools of Music, London (The Royal Academy of Music and Royal College of Music) 14 & 15, Bedford Square. Thirty Six page, with glossy white cover and plain white paper inside - "The Tramway Record Vol. 54, No. 13 Sept. 1992" - with title in green ink and Australian Tramway and Motor Omnibus Employees Association logo on the front cover. Printed by the Victorian branch of the union. Features on the front cover a photo (see image) of the tramway holiday flats at Rosebud. Other items featured are "Tram Stories" written by Frank Puls (Ballarat), pages 29 - 30, about his tramway driving days in Melbourne at Preston in the late 1950's and a photo of Frank standing next to W2 543 at Thornbury on 3/1/1963. Set of 4 drink coasters, with a blue felt back gold plastic front with an impression of a Melbourne tram contained within a black finished cardboard box. Each coaster has the imprint of the Melbourne Tourism logo, 150 years of Melbourne, produced for the Victoria's 150th celebrations 1984-85. Box has the Australian Made logo in gold printing. The coasters feature: Z3 class - 1980 - has a Stephen Daly trademark logo on the rear. W2 class - 1927 R Class - 1266 (Melbourne cable tram) - 1885 x 2 No. T class - 1917 Coasters finished with square corners, while those of the earlier production finished with rounded corners.
