After their marriage in 1932, they moved to Kew, initially to 81 Tennyson Street, and later to 180 Pakington Street. A professional tailoress, Viola Ayling was also a talented amateur potter, creating her ceramics at her home in Pakington Street, where she had an internal studio and a handmade, wood-fired brick kiln in her backyard. Following her death in 1990, her studio pottery passed to her daughter, and following the daughter’s death, to her granddaughter. This piece of glazed earthenware is part of a collection of 15 functional and decorative ceramic items donated by Viola’s granddaughter to the collection in 2024.A dish, expertly potted and glazed. The free-form shapes resemble waves which were initially covered with a white glaze which was then overgrazed in a semi-transparent turquoise glaze. RSSILA Wangaratta Sub Branch Dinner held to celebrate the Centenary of Wangaratta in 1938. Dinner guests included the Chief Commissioner of Police and Mr Holland, State President. Other Centenary events included the unveilling of the King George V Memorial Gardens which were opened by Mr McEwan Minister of the Interior, representing the Prime Minister. John McEwen was born on 29 March 1900 at Chiltern in Victoria, to pharmacist David McEwen and Amy (Porter) McEwen. His mother died after the birth of their second child in 1901, and his father died in 1907. McEwen and his younger sister were raised by their grandmother, Ellen Porter, who ran a boarding house. They lived first at Wangaratta and then moved to Dandenong in 1912. Victorian Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (VIOSH) Australia is the Asia-Pacific centre for teaching and research in occupational health and safety (OHS) and is known as one of Australia's leaders in the field. VIOSH has a global reputation for its innovative approach within the field of OHS management. VIOSH had its first intake of students in 1979. At that time the Institution was known as the Ballarat College of Advanced Education. In 1990 it became known as Ballarat University College, then in 1994 as University of Ballarat. It was 2014 that it became Federation University. VIOSH Australia students are safety managers, senior advisors and experienced OHS professionals. They come from all over Australia and industry. Students are taught active research and enquiry; rather than textbook learning and a one-size fits all approach. VIOSH accepts people into the Graduate Diploma of Occupational Hazard Management who have no undergraduate degree - on the basis of extensive work experience and knowledge. When VIOSH first began in 1979, Max and Dulcie Brooke were members of Staff at Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education and became part of the initial group in presenting the course. In the early 1990s, Max became ill and Dulcie retired to care for him. Max died in 1992 and Dulcie established the Max Brooke Memorial Shield in his memory. This was presented by Dulcie to the winner of the Award at the Presentation Dinner every year from 1993 to 2010. Black and white photograph of an image. Poppet head, overhead tramway, mine buildings, dam. Inscriptions: on front at bottom - printed 'United Devonshire'. Inscriptions: on back, type written. 'The 'United Devonshire' - New Chum Line of Reef'. Situated in the Devonshire Valley immediately south of Victoria St, Eaglehawk. Was the leading mine in the field in the years 1883-4 and 1885 during which time it produced 65,898 oz of gold and paid $(?)399,800 in dividends. This mine was then situated on what in January, 1902, became the West Shaft. The Company was then amalgamated with the 'Princess Alexandra' (approx 100 yds further east) which then became the Main Shaft of the 'United Devonshire'. Document - MINING ACCIDENTS - MAN FALLS DOWN GOLDEN FLEECE SHAFT
Handwritten extract from the Bendigo Advertiser dated 29/5/1873. Mr A. M. McHugh, Surveyor of Admiralty Dep't fell down the Golden Fleece Shaft on 28/5/73. The undergr'd Manager, Mr Thomas Mann, was showing him around. They had been at the 300 ft level and the cage was below them. Mann knocked for the cage wich stopped about four feet above the plat. Mann knocked the cage down, but it stopped about 10' or 12' above the plat. Mann said the cage had not stopped, and before he could remove his hand from the knocker, he saw Mr McHugh fall down the shaft. He died. A souvenir envelope for the 1956 Melbourne Olympics games. Front of envelope flap features the 1956 Melbourne Olympic Games emblem, flanked by the Myer emblem (left), and the City of Melbourne coat-of-arms (right). Inscription, "This souvenir envelope contains your reservations for the Olympic games November 22/December 8". The back of the flap features a message from the Myer Emporium. The front of the envelope pocket features the inscription, "XVI Olympiad 1956 Melbourne". It is flanked by two koalas, and crowned with the Olympic rings. The back of the envelope features the inscription, "With the compliments of the Myer Emporium Ltd." Clothing, White cotton infant's christening gown. High round neck. Front and back bodice. Front of bodice has a V shaped centre lace insert dropping 2 cm below waist. Neckline edged with gathered lace. Neckline and waist have casings with cotton tape ties tied at back opening 29 cm. Long sleeves with decorative cord at wrist and edged with 1 cm lace at hem. Lace cap sleeves overlay long sleeves. Tightly gathered skirt at waist. Centre front of christening gown has inverted V shaped insert with floral embroidered pattern in lower section.
