Souvenir Postcard Folder – Falls Creek Ski Village
Falls Creek Ski Resort developed during the construction of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme built by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria. The first ski lodge was built in 1948 by workers from the scheme. The first lift, a rope tow, was built in 1951 and the first chairlift in Australia was constructed there in 1957. Falls Creek Post Office opened in 1958. Tourism was growing and being encouraged by local businesses.The souvenir postcard was produced by Mr S. K. Pearce a Mt Beauty businessman. It was a memento for skiers and visitors to the Falls Creek and Mt Beauty area to send to family and friends as a reminder of their visit to the region or to keep as a personal souvenir. It presented an excellent promotional opportunity for enterprising local businessmen to promote the area to skiers and tourists near and far. Folder - Kiewa Methodist Church, 1917 to 1962
The copy of a letter written by Harry H. Simmonds of Huon notes that "the church existed in 1905. It was built by Hill and McCormack with timber donated by Mr Ned Dunstan on ground donated by Mr James Thomas probably in the late 1800s. It was possibly called a Methodist Church because the donor of the land was a Methodist. It was used by the three Protestant Groups and maintenance was paid for by an annual area collection.The house on the west side was a Presbyterian Manse for many years and the block of ground on the north side was known as the Manse paddock in which the minister grazed his cow and horse." In 1936 there was a fence between the Kiewa Methodist Church was the Presbyterian Church in Kiewa. Its Certificate of Title is Volume 5134 Folio 1026783 (Sept. 1942.) In 1952, the church was made of wood with an iron roof. In 1954. Request to Yackandandah Shire re a fence from Kiewa Consolidated School entrance to the unused hedge adjacent to the Church. In 1958 there was correspondence re 'the strip of land on each side of the Church.' Churches were an important part of life during the late 19th century and early to mid 20th century and were built in the centre of town as was this one. These papers give an understanding of the work involved in maintaining a church. The letters and 'book' give a lot of names of local families involved with the Methodist Church at Kiewa. Yellow plastic spiral folder with 18 pages enclosed in clear plastic sleeves.Papers enclosed include accounts, payments, tenders and other correspondence relating to the Methodist Church at Kiewa dating from 1932 to 1962. Of particular interest is a black cardboard cover book dated 1917 re collection of donations from listed people. Folder - Fainter Falls, 2003 - 2008
The Fainter Falls Walking Track was originally accessible via a fire fighting access trail, which was used by fire fighters putting out spot fires caused by lightening strikes. The fires in the summer of 2003 highlighted the beauty of the area and provided the residents with the opportunity to consider the redevelopment of the trail. Work to establish a 700 metre grade 2 walking trail with a 50 metre grade 3 extension trail to the Falls began in 2005. It also includes 3 observation decks, a bridge over a creek crossing, car parking and interpretive signage.A Friends of Fainter Falls committee was formed to work towards the construction of a track to Fainter Falls. The contents of this folder is evidence of how a local community achieved its goals for such a project in 2003 - 2008.Large orange lever arch folder bound with 2 rings. Folder - Retail Development of Mt Beauty
The papers have been collected in correspondence since 1947 and cover many of the retail shops in Mt Beauty. The sale of the shops by the State Electricity Commission during the 1960's when the construction of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme was completed. Owners of the Mt Beauty Supermart and Newsagency and Falls Creek Mini-Mart, Samuel Keith Pearce and Gordon Cathew Pearce's documents are included. The papers record a period when the SECV sold the retail shops in Mt Beauty after the completion of the Kiewa Hydro Electric Scheme. Note: It was recorded in the secretary's diary that concerts associated with the Collins Street Grand Music Promenade were held at the Melbourne Athenaeum Theatre all day on Sunday the 6th of November. John Hanlon Knipe is the person credited with first using the name 'Surrey Hills'. Not all of this material is of direct relevance to Surrey Hills, which in fact was but a small part of J H Knipe's business and land dealings. The aim of this report is to provide a preliminary overview of archival files held by the PRO which were research October 1997. Research was conducted into selected files in the series VPRS 1694. the files largely contain correspondence relating to the mangement of the Aboriginal reserves, the condition of the Aborigines, land use and policy development. Document types also include general inward and outward correspondence for the Board for the Protection of Aborigines (BPA) individual stations which often contain attendance lists inventory lists and contracts for the supply of goods.
