This site was originally that of Cobb and Co's livery stable and although the Cobb and Co office in the Shamrock Hotel closed in 1886, the livery stable continued with the proprietors, Robertson and Wagner and Co. The site was bought in August 1898 by the Fresh Food and Frozen Storage Co, proprietors of the Bendigo Butter Factory. On this site the company built an ice tory, refrigerating works and cool storage for other businesses. The Bendigo Butter Factory was begun in 1894 in Lucan Street, opposite the distillery, by Mr McIntyre of the Rochester district. This site included a butter printer and Weigher supplied by Cherry and Son of Gisborne. In September 1895 the Butter factory was floated as a public company and was registered by Mr J H Curnow. However the factory was not financially sound at this point and entered into receivership in 1896. At this time it was bought by the Fresh Food and Frozen Storage Company of Melbourne and was placed under the management of James Cumming, an experienced dairyman. The company had previously appointed him as their inspector of creameries. By 1911 he was the propietor of the Flora Hill Butter Factory. and was later killed in a car accident in May 1937. By 1919 the manager was Douglas Orson Oldfield (1868-1944) (NB at birth he was registered as Dugald and throughout his life he was also known as Dan).Colour photograph. School Correspondence to BHS re Joseph & Mary Cadogen and school at Spring Gully - information supplied to writer (Mr Willliams, Schofield NSW) 1971 re the school.. Location: First record available dates from the beginning of 1856. It is the Denominational School Board record from the Rev. J. D. Brennan of the Church of England. The record reads: School was conducted by Joseph Cadogen in the church hall which was used as a Sunday School of the wesleyan Chapel about the beginning of 1856. Records of the 1857 show that the weatherboard building - with a canvas roof and wooden floor , cost £100(pounds). Head teacher was Mr. J. Cadogen who was assisted by Elizabeth Hunt, (January-March), Jane Greenehame (april-May, and Mary Cadogen. The circle is divided into four with shaking hands in the top left, three deer in the top right, an angle and horn is the bottom left and a quiver and arrows on the right. Hand written letter titled 'The graves beside the swamp at Boort.' dated November 1962. Two of the headstones lie broken on the grass covered graves. On the granite slab at the right is the inscription 'In memoriam. George F. Campion of Exeter Devon, England, who departed this life, May 31st 1851. Aged 19 years. The 2 month old baby boy of 'John and Jane', married couple on 'Boort', died the same day and was buried beside Campion. There is nothing to mark his grave. Both were buried by the Station men. Mr J. R. Godfrey read the burial services for both. On the marble slab at the left can be deciphered the inscription sacred to the memory of George Bertram, fourth son of Henry and Mary Godfrey, Born 18th November 1858. Died 11th April 1860. On the headstone still standing can be read the inscription Sacred to the memory of Samuel C. Sutlee, who died April 1st 1871, aged 2 years 4 months. He is not dead - but sleepeth. This child was the son of a married couple 'on Boort', after the Godfrey family had left 'Boort'. Note - My nephew Russell Coutts of 'Dunbar', Boort, (formerly 'Boort' Station) is erecting a fence around the graves. His son, Peter took these photographs. I wrote the verses 'Beside the Swamp' after my first visit to them in 1957. I always take flowers and place them on the graves whenever I visit 'Dunbar' Selina M. Deravin 1962Russell Coutts and his son Peter have restored the graves beside the Lake at 'Dunbar' and erected a graveyard. This photograph was taken by Peter and the flowers placed on the graves by his mother Wilma who helps to care for them. Erected in the township of Miners Rest in 1920 in remembrance of fallen soldiers, this granite plinth cenotaph stands at the West end of an Avenue of Honour with 25 trees. The memorial is of Harcourt colonial granite, with bronze face plates, and contains the names of twenty-four soldiers of the district who sacrificed their lives at war. The monument was designed by the well-known sculptor, Mr F. W. Commons, and the work executed by returned soldiers employed at his studio on Creswick Road, Ballarat.The memorial is of historic and social significance to the people of BallaratGranite stone memorial including plaques on a bluestone base. 4 smaller granite posts and flag pole. Open Monument is a contemporary artwork acknowledging the history of Chinese people in Ballarat. The Chinese diaspora was global and many Chinese people came to Ballarat and the Victorian Goldfields. The work details some of the personal Chinese family memories of Ballarat from the goldrush forward. The 33 marble laser-etched panels include found images and texts mounted on a modernist metal architectural feature holding back a grassed hill landscape. A meeting was held on 18th August 1947 at the East Sunshine Community Hall with the aim of forming a motor cycle club. The name BRAYBROOK MOTOR CYCLE CLUB was decided upon "as it would cater for riders and non-riding members in all surrounding districts". The first President was Don Minahan with Bert Watson as Secretary. They had been members of the Auto Cycle Union whose members became dissatisfied with the prize money awarded, so the Victorian Motorcycle Association (VMCA) was formed. The President of the VMCA (Mr. A. Clarke) attended the meeting on 3rd September 1947 which was held in the Hall behind the Sunshine Theatre. This became the regular meeting place. The new Braybrook Club affiliated with the VMCA joining clubs from Altona, Coburg, Essendon, Newport and Preston. Membership mostly came from recreational motor bike riders looking for more structured competitive riding experience and enjoyment. The club conducted its events on Sunday afternoons and as sport at that time was not permitted on Sundays, they overcame that obstacle by seeking a silver coin donation (pointing out that "two bob" was expected). The events were mainly dirt scrambles over open land which today is known as "off road". The favourite sites were Sunshine's ample open spaces such as Glengala Road and McIntyre Road, as well as Arundell Road (Keilor) and Laverton. For track racing experience the club formed a very basic dirt track on the open land in Glengala Road west of the original Sunshine Golf Club, which was very popular on Sunday afternoons for both riders and spectators. In the early 1950's Motorbike and Sidecar races were also witnessed on some Sundays, on a track near the corner of McIntyre and Furlong Roads, North Sunshine. During 1950 the Braybrook members voted in favour of allowing the Sunshine Club to amalgamate with them and form the BRAYBROOK AND DISTRICT MOTORCYCLE CLUB. The merger took place at the meeting on 10th July 1950 when office bearers were elected. The club disbanded in the mid 1960's due to the massive residential development occurring in the Sunshine district, and so activities were merged with the Newport Club.
