Photograph of MMTB Track cleaner - dust vacuum car No 6 at Preston Workshops. Reference page 76 of Destination City says the tram was built in 1915 by the Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust as a general works car and rail flusher and further modified by the MMTB adding the vacuum equipment to try to control dust. Became known as No. 6 in 1934. Was out of use from the early 1940s and scrapped in 1948. The postcard photograph shows PMTT No. 23 a Maximum Traction bogie, straight sill combination with drop end at the Malvern Burke Road terminus, c1916. See page 60 of Destination City 5th edition for details of the tram. Purchased by the Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust, sold to the Hawthorn Tramways Trust during 1916, in 1920 absorbed by the MMTB and classed "O". They were sold to Adelaide in 1927. There is a large "1" in the front window, indicating the route number and the destination of Burke Road. Photo shows one of the Maximum Traction Bogies trams built for the Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust by Duncan and Fraser of Adelaide in 1913. Photographed in the Malvern depot yard - shows the very sharp curves. Most likely a newspaper photograph reproduced by the donor. The trams were only numbered on their ends at this time. Has two uniformed tramway men standing by the drop centre doors. Victoria Bridge is a riveted and welded steel Warren truss bridge over the Yarra River completed in 1884 to a design by Fraser & Chase following a controversial design competition held in 1880. Funds for the bridge's construction were provided by the councils of Collingwood, Hawthorn, Kew and Richmond. The contract was awarded to Mr P. Platt. Charles Rowand was officially appointed Supervising Engineer in 1883. The winning design was based on the theoretical work of William Charles Kernot (1845-1909) who campaigned for economy in public works design and the application of scientific principles in engineering. ... The bridge was widened in 1890 by the addition of a third line of truss on new piers on the up stream side to carry horse trams. Work commenced in 1914 to convert the horse tramway to an electric tramway by the Prahran & Malvern Tramways Trust, part of the Trust's extension of its tramway into the eastern suburbs between 1913-18. In 1915 the bridge was further strengthened to accommodate the extra weight of electric trams and widened by the addition of two six feet cantilever footpaths. During this period the Prahran & Malvern Tramways Trust erected two ornamental gantries over the roadway to support overhead wires for the electric tramway. Further widening and reconditioning of the bridge took place in 1933, including the addition of four new welded trusses, two intermediate and two on the outside. The latter were supported on new cantilevered truss cross beams attached to the top of the piers. Digital image of Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust (PMTT) bogie tram No. 35 at the Burke Road terminus c1914. The tram has the destination of St Kilda Road. Three crewman are standing by the front of the tram - motorman or driver and two conductors. Two conductors were used as the seating arrangements had two full width cross bench seats as shown in the floor plan - see second image. This prevented the conductor collecting fares from all passengers unless they swung to the outside of the tram. Not known whether this was a full time arrangement or for peak periods only. Photograph - of a K class four-wheel or single truck tram on a PMTT route 14 (STRATHALBYN ST (Kew) - VICTORIA BRIDGE) tram service, at Harp Road and High St. The reference gives the tram based at Kew Depot in 1928. The tram was originally a Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust tram, though, by the time of this photograph, it has been re-lettered for the MMTB, which took over the PMTT in 1920. The photograph has been marked up for a submission possibly to either Council or the MMTB for a waiting room or shelter at this location. The wall of the Harp of Erin Hotel and a Victoria Bitter sign can be seen on the right-hand side. The original photo appears to have been torn. Black and white photograph of tramcar 76 at Batman Avenue terminus in 1925. The tram is a single-truck California combination tram, one of 20 built for the P&MTT in 1915. The photo was taken at Batman Avenue in 1925 and shows a driver or conductor adjusting the trolley pole. The photo shows the Batman Ave terminus and Flinders St station in the background. Tram 76 was built in 1915 by the Meadow Manufacturing Co in Sydney for the Prahran and Malvern Tramways Trust before transferring to the MMTB in 1920. The J-class tram was bought by the SECV in 1931 and moved to Ballarat as tram No. 19. It operated in Ballarat until it was transferred to Bendigo in 1960 as tram No. 7, operating as public transport until 1972. It is now in operating condition at the Tramway Museum Society of Victoria in Bendigo.
