Information about the dating of this photograph was provided by the 'Ask A Librarian' service of the State Library of Victoria. The Scripture Referendum was held on the same day as the Victorian Parliamentary Elections, in which J. Bowser ran against A.K. Buckley for a seat in the legislative assembly in the electoral district of Wangaratta and Rutherglen. The Scripture Referendum had three questions: "1. Are you in favour of the Education Act remaining as at present, strictly secular? 2. Are you in favour of such legislation as shall cause the scheme of Scripture lessons recommended by the Royal Commission on Religious Instruction to be taught in State schools during school hours to children whose parents desire the teaching (such lessons would be given subject to a conscience clause exempting teachers who object)? 3. Are you in favour of the prayers and hymns selected by the Royal Commission being used?" Small red cloth covered hardcover book for children with gold imprint picture of boys at school sitting at a desk in a classroom. The title and author are in red with a gold background. There are black lined patterns of fleur de lis on the front cover as well. Full page black and white illustrations are throughout as well as floral decorations at the top of each we chapter. Illuminated style lettering is used for the first word of each chapter. Gold edging to the pages and a printed coloured Presented To, page is at the front of the book. The back cover has a fleur de lis symbol in the middle. This is a fine book depicting the world of the C19th. Parwan Football Club was formed in May 1912. The specific date of this photo is not given, but it is likely that it was taken between 1912 and 1914, when the football competition was suspended. This photo is one of the oldest known photographic records of an Australian Rules football team in the Bacchus Marsh area. Australian Rules football was played in this area as early as the 1870s. An organized competition to play regular matches was formed in the early years of the twentieth century. This item has historic and social significance as an image of one of the early sporting teams of Bacchus Marsh and district. It is a typical example of team photographs of this era. It is evidence of the transition of football from a social informal setting to an organised activity and signals the growth of importance of sport, in this case Australian Rules football, as a cultural and social activity central to the Australian ethos. A sepia photograph print mounted on mounting board, showing a group of 20 men arranged in three rows. Two men, standing at either end of the group, are wearing street clothes. The remaining men are wearing a uniform of striped guernseys, white knickerbockers, knee high socks and lace up boots. Two of the men are wearing front-laced guernseys. Three are wearing striped caps, which could be part of the uniform, two a flat cap and two are wearing brimmed hats. Costa’s Wine Cafe was once one of the best known landmarks in Wodonga. It was near the corner of High Street and Lawrence, across the road from where the water tower was later built. Mr. Bernardo Costa came to Australia from Switzerland, arriving in Sydney in 1857. In 1882 he moved to Wodonga and conducted his boot sale and repair business He applied for a Wine License in December 1886. In 1908 B Costa advertised that he had rebuilt his premises, which “affords the best and most comfortable accommodation to the travelling public”. For a while it was known as Wodonga Swiss Wine Café. After Bernardo’s death in 1915 the wine cafe and accommodation at the rear was run by his three daughters, Annie, Angela and Gertrude. In 1941 the Misses Costa sold their business and freehold to Mrs. J Adams who died just six years later. It was then run by her son Pat Adams, and after his demise his wife ran the business. Frank Walsh was running it as Walsh’s Wine Café by 1951. '"ARTHUR EDMUND TRANTER" Enlisted on 20/11/1939 Regt No. V50166 in the CMF, posted to 2nd Training Bn Balcombe. Discharged from the CMF 16/12/1940 with the rank of Sergeant in 2/7 Training Battalion. Enlisted in the 2nd AIF 17/12/1940 Regt No. VX52843 in 2/29th Battalion at Darnley Camp, embarked for Singapore 13.9.1941, disembarked 5.10.1941, reported missing 16.2.1942 then classified POW. He was recovered in Sumatra after the surrender. He was hospitalised with Malnutrition then classed Debility. Disembarked Sydney 9.10.1945. Discharged from the 2nd AIF on 20/12/1945 with the rank of Lieutenant. He was awarded a Mention in Despatches and the Efficiency Medal.Soft cover book.
