‘A’ Squadron 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles conducted a parade at Buna Barracks, Albury on Sunday 1 May 1988 to mark the 103rd Anniversary of the formation of the Victorian Mounted Rifles and the 40th Anniversary of the linking of the 8th (Indi), 13th (Gippsland) and 20th (Victorian Mounted Rifles) Light Horse Regiments to form the 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles. Colonel G K Howard, Director of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps was the Reviewing Officer. The Pipes and Drums of the 5th/6th Battalion Royal Victorian Regiment provided the music for the occasion. This trophy awarded annually for best troop was presented by former Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Alan Cunningham. The 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles was raised as a regiment of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps on 1 May 1948 with Headquarters in Melbourne and squadrons in Sale, Benalla/Wangaratta and Albury. In 1955 Regimental Headquarters moved to Wangaratta and a second squadron was located at Albury. The Sale squadron transferred to 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse. In 1977 8/13 VMR Regiment was reduced to an independent squadron A Squadron 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles and in 1991 was linked with 4th/19th Prince of Wales’s Light Horse forming the VMR Squadron of that regiment.Black and white photograph of 23 soldiers of ' A ' Squadron 8/13 Victorian Mounted Rifles being the winning troop in the Cunningham Shield Competition for the best troop for 1986. Trooping of the 20th Light Horse guidon through the streets of Seymour Victoria to mark a significant occasion in the towns long connection with the Regiment. A parade involving seven Ferret Scout cars was an unusual event. This photograph was displayed in the ORs Mess at the 8th/13th VMR depot Wangaratta until closure of the depot when the photo was passed to the Regimental Collection. Donor is daughter of a member of Australian armed forces who served during WW2, and was member of garrison at Camp 13 after the war, in 1946. Donor was researching her father's service & obtained at her expense copies of these archives held by the AWM, related to daily activities in the camp during the time that her father was posted at Murchison. Records show, amongst other things, troop (garrison) movements, routine orders, outcomes of disciplinary proceedings. The 1st Kew Scouts was one of the first Scout Troops in Victoria, being formed in 1909. From 1927 they met in a magnificent Scout Hall in Disraeli Street, Kew until it was demolished in 1993. Still operating (in 2020) from their new Scout Hall on the corner of Kilby Road and Kellett Grove, Kew.The Kew Troop was the informal title given to the 1st kew Scouts. 1st Surrey Hills Boy Scout Troop was formed in 1909 by Theodore Hendy, two years after Lord Robert Baden-Powell had started the Movement. Hendy (left back) sent Baden-Powell greetings advising he was sending a photo of his troop. This could be the photograph. Taken in the grounds of his home "Kookaburra" (demolished) in Albany Crescent, Surrey Hills (later given the number 44). The Royal Hotel on the corner of Canterbury Road and Broughton Road can be seen on the right. The photograph was taken by M. Hill, uncle of Mr W. Dempsey. 'Kookaburra' was the home of Theodore Hendy's uncle Archibald Noete Hendy, an estate agent. Earlier it was known as 'Glastonbury'. In c1938 the house was demolished and the land divided into 4 lots. Archibald Hendy and his wife Bertha Bowen (nee Rohs) later resided at 'Barehin' in Pembroke Street. May have been a Festival of Nations or part of the Empire Day Celebration held each year on or about 24th May. Photograph by W.V.Hill (1854-1940) who was a leader in the 1st Surrey Hills Scout troop and who may be in this photo (compare SHP0991). William Valentine Hill, clerk, lived in (10) Pembroke Street, Surrey Hills in the early years of the 20th century. Post WW1 he moved to 27 Broughton Road, Surrey Hills and later to Spencer Street, Camberwell.William Valentine Hill was a keen photographer There are many copies of his photos in this collection, donated by his nephew, William (Bill) Dempsey.
