Prior to the election of female Councillors and Mayors in the 1960’s, the Lady Mayoress role was one of the few ways women could be active in civic life. Mayoresses made important contributions to their local communities through their charity work and as ambassadors for their region on a state and at times, national level. Mayoresses were also required to undertake Mayoral duties on occasions when their husband was unavailable. Mayoress Batchelder was born Elizabeth Helen Wilkinson and is recognised for her work among the poor of the district. Early photograph of the Ballarat Post Office taken from the intersection of Sturt and Lydiard Streets. A gas lamp stands in the middle of the intersection. People standing and talking on the roads. The Post Office was built in two sections. Section one built in 1864. Section two and the tower were built in 1885. It was built in the Victorian Italianate design. Arched headed windows on the ground floor originally formed a colonnade. These were filled in to provide more internal space. The tower was a feature - the top having a cast iron balustraded widow's walk.Ballarat Post Office - view north along Lydiard Street from its intersection with Sturt Street. Image taken in 1897. To mark the diamond jubilee of Queen Victoria reigning as the monarchy for 60 years. She died four years later in 1901. These medals were mass produces by Stokes & Sons of Melbourne, many of the local government bodies had them made.Marking the 60 years that Queen Victoria was on the throne. A round medal with a young and older faced Queen Victoria on one side. And on the other side is the Shire of Ballarat 's "Coat of Arm". Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was later appointed Musical Director of the London County Council, where he organized many amazing concerts in parks, in and around the London district. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and conducted at the Guildhall of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. The Frank Wright Medal at the Royal South Street competition is awarded to an individual recognized as making an outstanding contribution to brass music in Australia.Sepia photograph of a man dressed in a suit, leaning back against a large canon on wheels.
