Anne Pedretti was born at Elevated Plains, Victoria, on 15 September 1875, the daughter of Martino Pedretti and Sarah Ind. She married George Gervasoni of Yandoit Creek, and died at Dayesford on 13 August 1957. The first section of the Ballarat Post Office was built in 1864, the second (including the tower and offices in Lydiard St) in 1885. The original design had the arched windows on the ground floor (facing Sturt St) forming a colonnade, but these were soon filled in to provide more internal space. Here the Post Office is decorated for the 1956 Olympic Games, when the rowing and canoeing events were held on Lake Wendouree. Mrs Bon Strange and her husband Bert were well known Ballarat residents. The following research was undertaken for the Coat of Arms in the foyer of Ballarat Civic Hall, painted by Angus Henderson. The Ballarat arms were granted on 10 May 1956. The shield is supported by a farmer and a miner and topped by a trident (referring to Britannia and aquatic sports) with sprigs of wattle and begonias either side. The crossed oars against the Eureka flag refer to rowing events in the 1956 Olympic Games. The importance of farming and industry are shown by the sheep and cogwheel while the lyre reflects the City’s commitment to the arts and Royal South Street Society, which contributed to the design of the Civic Hall. The name Ballaarat came from two Aboriginal words: balla and arat, meaning ‘resting place’. At the time of Council amalgamations, May 1994, Ballarat became the name of the new Council. The Latin motto: Cultus: cultivation, care, worship Formar: form, shape, appearance Industria: diligence, activity, industry Zilles Printers was begun by Lewis Zilles in the early 1930s. During World War I he served with the Australian Flying Corps and was at Gallipoli. He then became a motor dealer, running his own company. In June 1924 he married Ruby Chapman. From 1935 to 1952 he served on Melbourne City Council. He was elected to the Victorian Legislative Council in 1940 as a United Australia Party member, representing Higginbotham Province; at this time his father still represented Melbourne West for the Labor Party. Disney was a supporter of Ian MacFarlane, and served in his brief ministry in October–November 1945 as Minister of Transport and Mines. He consequently lost Liberal endorsement in 1946 and was defeated. In 1948 he was elected Lord Mayor of Melbourne, serving until 1951; during this period he was closely involved with securing the 1956 Olympic Games for Melbourne. The Melbourne Olympic games were mainly conducted at the Melbourne Cricket Ground and were one of the most successful in terms of medals for Australia. Among the medal winners were Shirley Strickland, Betty Cuthbert in Athletics and Dawn Fraser and Murray rose in swimming. The games commenced in November 1956. The games were noted for the 19 Hungarian athletes who applied for asylum with their home country undergoing upheaval at the time. The Melbourne games also enjoyed the advent of television with the technology having recently been introduced to the country. This ash tray is a souvenir of the Olympic Games held in Melbourne in 1956. This was an important event in post World War Two Australia and the first time the Olympic Games had been held in the Southern Hemisphere. The Opening and Closing Ceremonies, the athletics events and some other events were held at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. These were the first televised Olympic Games. Kindly scanned from Ringwood Branch archival collectionTranscript (kindly completed by Ken Briscoe using ChatGPT) During the second World War, a group of Ringwood ladies sent tins of fat to England. When the War ended in 1946, the Mayoress, Mrs. H.E. Parker, called a meeting and a branch of the Country Women's Association was formed. The subscription was four shillings and two shillings for associate members. Meetings were held in the lower Town Hall, the President and Secretary sat on the stage, the Treasurer at a table on the floor and the hostess at the door to welcome members. Birthdays were held in the Town Hall. There was an active drama group who performed at competitions. After the Olympic Games in Melbourne in 1956, members re-enacted some of the events. A yearly ball was held for several years. Members catered for the Scout Jamboree. They looked after victims of the bush fires - the Town Hall was covered in beds. Mrs. Pratt, Senior, whose husband took up a selection in Ringwood, gave a block of land to the C.W.A., but the late Councillor Mr. Frank Corr, told his wife (a member) that the Council would not permit a hall to be built on this land so the block was sold to the Masonic Lodge for 250 pounds. Cards were enjoyed monthly in the Presbyterian Church Hall in Adelaide Street. Craft group met in the Church of England Hall in Ringwood Street.
