This SEC cook book was produced circa 1950s when the Kiewa Hydro Electricity Scheme and its Commission was in full swing. The Commission had constructed two settlements, Mount Beauty and Bogong Village to house construction workers and their families in a "closed" community. These "closed" communities were for SEC staff and construction workers only. Entry into these villages was restricted to "SEC pass" carrying construction staff and their families. All facilities such as retail, sporting and other community services was provided by the SEC. This created an isolated community in which limited individual choice or administrative family leeway was available. It was a typical company town (live and work for the company). The Company was in the Kiewa Valley constructing power stations for the Kiewa Hydro Electricity Scheme of Victoria. In one way the individual did not need to be concerned with living costs, educational needs for children, and recreational amenities and therefore "normal" community survival /living methods did not apply. This living, although restrictive, was quite simple. When the scheme was completed, in 1961, marking the end of company town, caused some of the employees, who had enjoyed the "controlled" township environment, a fair degree of angst in having the new 'laissez-faire" controls thrust upon them. This was magnified when both Mount Beauty and Bogong Village became meshed into the Bright Shire, vis-a-vis, local government. This cook book is a prime example of " the company is looking after you" and leave the worrying to us. This environment of a "company town", which creates the atmosphere of minimal personal responsibilities, is still present in a few remote mining towns in Australia at the beginning of the 21st Century.This book is a classical example of the psychological control in which the company had its construction workers families living in. The motto of many companies who had employees in isolated regions was "keep them happy". A happy and contented worker is a more productive worker. This was a period in time (1950s to 1970s) when social psychology was gaining recognition in the Australian workforce as well as internationally. At the end of the construction of all the power stations both the Mount Beauty settlement and the Bogong Village became more integrated into the main stream of rural Australia environment. Development of tourism in the region opened up not only interaction with a greater cross section of the ever expanding type of Australian but also the overseas based non rural culture tourist or immigrant. It allowed the intermingling of ideas in a non company controlled environment. The Mount Beauty and Bogong Village has, and even up to the 3000 Millennium, the same housing construction, as was built by the SEC. There has only been a very gradual change to modern domestic architectural home styles. This SEC cookbook has a folded cover with two staples at the spine, securing eight double sided pages. The white pages contain black print and sketches(3), and one black and white photograph (of the author). The front cover is mainly orange in colour with a gradual fading into yellow(at the top). The cover is approximately 210 g/m2 in thickness and each page is approximately 90 g/m2 thick. These documents concern a legal case involving the Town Of Warrnambool, Elizabeth Granter and James Harris. The lawyer in the case was William Ardlie. The son of John and Mary Ardlie, pioneer settlers in Warrnambool, William Ardlie was a prominent lawyer in Warrnambool from the late 1860s to the early 1930s and was active in community affairs. Elizabeth Granter, involved in the financial side of the legal case, was the wife of James Granter, another prominent Warrnambool identity of the 19th century. Granter was a quarryman and a road contractor and he and other members of his family seem to have been involved in other legal battles with James Harris, an employee of the Warrnambool Tramway, also involved in the financial aspects of the legal case. These three documents are of minor interest as an example of the legal cases undertaken by the well-known Warrnambool lawyer, William Ardlie. These are three 1888/1889 documents related to the legal practice of William Ardlie. Item One is a document listing the details of a court case involving Elizabeth Granter, James Harris and the Town Council of Warrnambool and is a sheet of paper with the details of the case written on both sides of the paper in black ink. The back page has a green stamp to the value of one penny. Item Two is a letter from Charles Hider, the bookseller, in regard to an item received by H.A.C. Macdonald, the Town Clerk of the Town of Warrnambool. The handwriting is in black ink. Item Three is a letter from the Warrnambool Tramway Department to Mr Ardlie regarding the request of James Harris for a small sum of money. This letter is a sheet of paper folded in two and written in black ink on one of the four sides. Dame Nellie Melba, born Helen Porter Mitchell (1861-1931), was the first Australian to gain international fame as an opera singer and one of the best-known singers in late Victorian times. She took the name ‘Melba’ from her home town, Melbourne. She sang in Warrnambool on at least two occasions, staying at local homes, including ‘Summer Hill’, belonging to the Murray family and ‘Lyndoch’ as the guest of Florence Lake. In 1927 she sang at the Warrnambool Town Hall with three other assisting artists and this programme records that event. The Warnambool and District Historical Society has an evening bag that was given by Nellie Melba to Miss O’Donnell, a maid at ‘Lyndoch’ at that time. This programme is of considerable significance as it is a memento of the occasion in 1927 when the famous Australian opera singer sang at the Warrnambool Town Hall during her farewell tour. After being destroyed by fire in 1882 it wasn’t until 1910 that the Warrnambool Chamber of Commerce was approached by Marcus Saltau and Peter McGennan to invest in a new mill. The original directors were James Dickson, P J McGennan, Robert Swinton, M Saltau, and J W Younger. In 1955 the Warrnambool Woollen Mill formed a partnership with the Wangaratta Woollen Mills. Dunlop bought the mill in 1968. From that time until its closure in 2000 it had a number of different owners, the last being the Smith Family Industries. The Mill site holds significance for Warrnambool as the site was one of the earliest industries established in the town. The Warrnambool Woollen Mill operated for close to 100 years and in that time forged a strong link with the people of Warrnambool. This booklet of sales dockets came from the Youngers Stores in Warrnambool. John Younger came to Warrnambool from Beechworth in 1888 and established a general store in Liebig Street and quickly built up a thriving business. His store was one of the main reasons why Liebig Street became the main shopping precinct in Warrnambool by the beginning of the 20th century. John Younger was active in community affairs and was a Town Councillor from 1902 to 1918 and Mayor of the Town. He died in the 1930s and his store was continued by family members but taken over by Charles Moore in 1958. It closed in the 1980s. The maker of the docket book, Lamson Paragon Limited, was a British firm with factories and offices in Australia and it initially specialized in making sales docket books using a carbon paper process. The original founder of the firm, William Lamson of Massachusetts, U.S.A., was the first to introduce the system of paying for goods in a store using cash balls on tracks. This pad is of some interest as it shows the system of receipts issued by a Warrnambool firm in the 1950s. It is of particular interest coming from Youngers Stores, a major retailer in Warrnambool for over 90 years. This is a pad of dockets stapled together 30 pages). The pages are buff-coloured with red and black printing on every second page. Every second page has been left blank so that a second copy could be kept of every transaction using carbon paper. The pad originally had dockets for 50 transactions for Youngers Stores in Liebig Street, Warrnambool. The first three pages are badly torn. Holloway in 1851. The land was sub-divided and called "Little Eltham". Bridge Street was created as part of the sub-division. Most of the sub-division was residential lots but the creek valley was divided into lots for small farms. Council started to buy the land for the Eltham Town park in the early 1960s. The area was used as a garbage tip and filled above the flood plain of the creek. Development of the land for a park began in the early 1970s. The house on the right was owned for many years by the Hill family until Council bought it in the early 1960s. The house was built in the 1850s or 60s. The house on the left stood on what is now the southwest corner of Susan and Bridge Streets. The Braithwaite family was associated with this house. The double line of fencing in the foreground was a continuation of York Street to the creek. The Bridge Street bridge was built in 1875 and replaced in 1958. This poster was used to promote the Australian release of SOMEWHERE NEAR TAPACHULA February-April 2010. The film was shot on location in Tapachula, Mexico near the Guatemala border and tells the story of the orphanage Mision Mexico exstablished by two Australians Alan and Pamela Skuse. Surfing was introduced to the children at the orphanage in 2004 and surfing has now become an important part of the weekly program but has also played a key role in improving the lives of the children in the orphanage. SOMEWHERE NEAR TAPACHULA is a unique surfing documentary which explores the social impact of surfing on a community of children living in a Mexican orphanage run by two Australians. The design of this pair (RN 758 & 759) is based on Thonet’s No. 18 chair, which was originally produced in 1876 by Thonet, and is still one of the best-selling designs for café and restaurant owners. It is elegant, sophisticated and durable. The label notes the design as “AUS MASSIV GEBOGENEM HOLZE vorm” which translates to “solid curved sandals shape”, a good description for the back of the chair. The chairs have marks, paper labels and symbols on them that show that the maker was Harnisch & Co., Neuschler (also called Banská Bystrica) Furniture Factory in Neuschol (Beszterczebanya), Hungary, privileged makers for the Imperial and Royal Austrian-Hungarian Empire 1867 – 1918. Bentwood chairs are made by a process of wetting wood in water, bending it into curved shapes, then allowing it to dry so that the shape becomes permanent. This process originated by Michael Thonet, who had been given the right to bend wood into desired curves by the Austrian Courts in 1842. In 1856 he was granted a 13 year patent to manufacture chairs and table legs of bent wood treated by steam or boiling water. In 1859 his company Gebruder Thonet produced his original design. Thonet’s early designs also featured hand carved or laminated wooden seats. His Model No. 14 produced in the 1850’s, was his most popular design. After Michael’s death in 1871 the family went on designing and producing chairs. The No. 18 chair was produced in 1876, one of a group of chars with back inserts consisting of curves and loops of bentwood. These bentwood chairs are believed to be associated with the either the original Warrnambool Town Hall or the Toc H Group in Warrnambool. The Warrnambool Town Hall played a significant role in the both the local government and the social events of local and district areas. This private late-nineteenth-century four-wheeled carriage has been built to transport a family or group of passengers with a coachman in the front seat. It can be pulled by one horse, or by two horses if the T-pole is attached. The button fittings along each side of the carriage indicate that a folding roof or hood was once attached. The frame across the front of the carriagewas likely to have been a ‘dashboard’ with a leather or wood covering to prevent water, mud and other particles from splashing onto the passengers. The rear step between the two side-facing bench seats is adjustable to allow for ladies’ long skirts. These rear seats appear to be removable, in which case the carriage could be converted to a wagon to transport goods and equipment. The carriage could have been illuminated by oil or carbide lamps placed into the lamp holders on the sides. The carriage was kept under cover for many years in an open-front sandstone building that also included living quarters and an area that may have been stable. It was at ‘Murweh’ a Warrnambool property at 203 Liebig Street. The home is now Heritage and National Trust Listed and described as a ‘gentleman’s residence’. It was built by James Wotton Shevill in the 1860s. Shevill was a councillor from 1875 to 1878, serving in 1878 as Mayor of the Borough of Warrnambool. Jeremiah Wade lived at Murweh there from 1879-1880. By 1915 F.B. Whitehead and his family were living there, and by 1930 the address was used by Mr T.J. Rome and his family. Thomas James Rome was still using that address in September 1973 after his 100th birthday. It is believed that one of the property’s owners had been an Obstetrician in Warrnambool. The current owner re-told the story that children used to hide in the back section of the carriage and smoke, hidden from the sight of onlookers. He had heard the story from a previous owner.The well-appointed horse-drawn four-wheeled carriage is likely to have first belonged to a local councillor and past Mayor of the town of Warrnambool, J.W. Shervill, whose 1860s city property was the carriage location for many years. The carriage is a rare local example of a town-based lifestyle befitting a prosperous personality of the late 19th century. It adds to the story of Warrnambool's development as a town influenced by the port, wealth gained from shipping and the home place of prominent local people such as the Councillor and later Mayor. The side-facing rear seating is unusual for a passenger carriage. It has the feature of removable rear bench seats, allowing for the dual purpose of a carriage or wagon.Carriage; the Victorian-era horse-drawn four-wheeled open carriage has a coachman’s bench seat across the front and two side-facing bench seats in the rear. There are steps at the front on each side and a centre adjustable step and the back. It has a hinged shaft, two lamp holders and a separate T-pole. The bench seats have padded backrests upholstered in green leather and each has padded armrests at the ends. A rectangular metal frame, likely to have been a dashboard, is mounted across the front of the carriage. It has two inner vertical bars. The carriage's body is painted dark green with crimson highlights on some of the panelling. Decorative oval panels with hand-painted motifs are mounted along the sides. The side panels of the carriage have metal fastener buttons attached. The iron-rimmed wheels have sixteen wooden spokes and copper cuffs on the outside of the hubs, and the rear wheels are higher than the front wheels. Wooden brake blocks are mounted onto the back wheels and are active by a metal lever at the front right side of the carriage. The undercarriage is fitted with leaf springs on each side, mounted from front to back axles. A spring cart is a two-wheeled, one-horse cart, often with the driver standing up to drive it, and otherwise seated on a simple seat. Carts like this one had springs to make the ride smoother. It is a lighter version of a farm dray and is sometimes called a spring dray. Spring carts were often used on farms for carrying loads. In the towns, some businesses used a spring cart for deliveries of bread, milk and other goods. The carts would be used for travel and for families going on outings and picnics. Visitors to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village from 1986 to 1992 would enjoy watching a Clydesdale horse named Duke as he worked around the village with his driver Pat McGowan. He would be hitched to a wagon or to this lightweight spring cart or sometimes he would pull the wagon with the cart attached as a trailer. The cart was used for maintenance, carting loads of timber or stone around the site or from town to Flagstaff Hill. Sometimes Duke and the cart would take visitors for cart rides around the Village. Pat McGowan was known for his restoration of horse-drawn vehicles including this spring cart. He already had 40 years of horse handling experience when he began looking after Duke, feeding and harnessing him and driving the horse and cart around the Village. Pat’s dog ‘Yabbie’ would often join them. In August 1992 Duke had to be put down. Warrnambool Veterinary Clinic and other fund-raisers began well-supported appeals and the beloved horse was replaced by a Clydesdale also named Duke (the second), who began work in late October 1992. He, like his predecessor, had a quiet temperament and was comfortable in the traffic. The spring card is an example of vehicles used on farms, for business delivery and for domestic transport in the late-19th and early-20th century. This cart is of note for being associated with the Clydesdale horse Duke which pulled the cart around Flagstaff Hills in the 1980s and 1990s, representing transport of that period.Spring cart; two-wheeled cart with shallow box tray and plank seat bolted across the front. Wheels have metal rims and fourteen (14) wooden spokes. A plank is bolted from side to side. A decorative metal step is on the cart's left and has acorn cut-out shapes in the plate. Both wheels have a brake block that is operated by a lever on the cart's right. The cart has eight-leaf suspension from front to back. The box tray is painted blue and has decorative pale yellow detail. Each shaft pole has has a handle fitting on it. A letter written to Maurice Keppel by John William Lindt in 1903.A letter written to Maurice Keppel by John William Lindt in 1903. John William Lindt was born in Germany in 1845. At 17 he took a working passage to Australia on a Dutch sailing ship. Taking up work as an itinerant piano-tuner, he traveled amongst towns in Victoria and New South Wales before settling in Grafton in 1863 where he became assistant and apprentice to photographer Conrad Wagner. After a brief return to Germany in 1867 Lindt took over management of Wagner’s studio in 1869. He married Wagner’s daughter, Anna on 13 January 1872. Over 1873-1874, using the slow and laborious wet-plate collodion process, John Lindt produced photographs of the local indigenous people both in their environment conducting actual traditional ceremonies in the Clarence River district, and in his studio. Twelve of this series is included in his 1874 album Australian Aboriginals. John Lindt moved to Melbourne in 1876 where he worked for Batchelder & Co. before opening his own opulent studios at number 7 at the top of Collins Street opposite the Treasury, in 1877. John Lindt's business of this period was wide-ranging, and included portraits, records of Melbourne public buildings and streetscapes, the Botanical Gardens, and Port Melbourne. He was a welcome photographer of members of parliament and other Melbourne personalities, their society and cultural life including the theatre, and was known as a ‘rich man’s photographer’ for those whose families he grouped informally on the lawns in front of their mansions, with servants at the rails of the upstairs balconies. He continued with landscape, producing folios Fernshaw and Watt River Scenery, Victoria ( c.1878-82), Scenery on the Ovens and Buckland Rivers, Victoria (c.1878–82) and Lorne, Louttit Bay and Cape Otway Ranges (1883). Sales of his Black Spur scenery amounted to approximately 25,000 copies printed from the original negatives between 1882 and 1892. John Lindt, in collaboration with Nicholas John Caire, produced a tourist booklet on the area around "The Hermitage" in 1913. Maurice Keppel, from Ireland, was one of the first landholders in the newly surveyed town of Marysville in 1864. He and his wife ran the successful Keppel’s Australian Hotel. Two of their sons, John and Jerry, established a farm and opened up the surrounding high country. The nine postcards in this set were donated together and date to the early 1900s. All but one postcard in this set shows images of Warrnambool, in the Western District of Victoria; the other has a London image. The postcards were all printed in Great Britain according to that country’s postal regulations. The fronts of all cards have titles printed in red. Most of the images on the cards are attributed to photographer Joseph Jordan and belong to the Jordan Series. The back of these cards has an outline for a postage stamp, a vertical dividing line and a heading on each side of the line to separate the Correspondence from the Address. Postcards or ‘correspondence cards’ appeared in Britain in 1894. They were plain cards with a space for the message on one side and an address on the other; regulations didn’t allow anything but the address to be written on the ‘address’ side. In 1902 the British regulations then allowed a picture to be printed on the front and the address on the back, so messages had to be written on the picture side. Soon, the regulations changed and the back was divided for a message and the address. Tower Hill and Lake, Warrnambool – Tower Hill Wildlife Reserve is in the crater of a dormant volcano. In 1892 the area was declared a National Park, the first in Victoria, preserving native animals and Indigenous plants. The rich volcanic soil in the area attracted early settlers including the families of Henry Giles, born at Tower Hill in 1858 and his wife Mary Jane (born Freckleton) born nearby at Cooramook in 1860. Henry and Mary worked in the local area where they also raised their six children. For a time, Henry was employed as a labourer on the Warrnambool Breakwater. Joseph Jordan - Joseph Jordan was born in 1841 in Leicester England. When he was 16 he joined the 7th Queen's Own Hussars and was sent to India at the outbreak of the mutiny. He took part in the relief of Lucknow and remained in India for eleven years. It was during this time that he became interested in photography. He was posted to New Zealand and later came to Victoria, becoming a sergeant major of the Mounted Rifles. In the mid-1880s he came to the Western district where he was responsible for establishing units of the Mounted Rifles in various country towns such as Dunkeld, Mortlake, Panmure, Bushfield, Koroit etc. He resigned from the army in 1889 and set up a professional photography studio in Liebig Street, Warrnambool. He became very well known in the Western District for family photographs, official photographs of local councillors and groups as well as views of local scenery. In 1891 he photographed the wrecked barque ‘Fiji’ at ‘Wrecks Beach’ near Princetown. His business was taken over by his son Arthur around 1917. Joseph was a keen rifle shot and in 1924 he donated the "Jordan Shield" as a prize to the Victorian Rifle Association. He was made a "Life Honorary Member" of the Warrnambool Returned Soldiers League and in 1933 he was recognised as being the oldest living soldier in Victoria. Joseph died in 1935 aged 95.The postcard of Tower Hill and Lake is connected to the location near Warrnambool where many of our early settlers lived and worked. One of these settlers was the Giles family, whose son Henry was born at Tower Hill. His family has donated many Victorian-era items which are now on display at Flagstaff Hill. Tower Hill National Park is the first place in Victoria to be named a National Park. As in the times when coastal trading ships brought passengers and cargo to the Port of Warrnambool, it continues to be a popular place to visit. Joseph Jordan is a significant figure in Warrnambool history as he helped to establish early units of the Mounted Rifles (G Company) in local towns during the late 1880's and later, photographed local scenes, groups and citizens of early Warrnambool.Postcard, one of nine, landscape orientation, coloured print within a rectangle and an impressed line around the image on the front. The picture shows several islands close together with hills around them and bushland in the foreground. There are dead trees amongst the vegetation and a sandy shore at the foot of some of the hills. The lower left corner shows what appears to be two white rails, possibly a lookout fence. There is no correspondence written on the card. It is also interesting that an notice was printed in the Geelong Advertiser in 1922 stating that Edith Susan Fox of Box Hill had an interest in land in Gheringhap. Gheringhap is a town on the Midland Highway, Victoria, 15 km northwest of Geelong, and 6.7 km southeast of Bannockburn. This is one of two journals of ladies fashion, fancy work and stories that reflect the interests of women the late 1800s. They are a useful source of historical information and include advertising and thought provoking articles .Young Ladies Journal 1884 - 1885; a collection of journals in a burgundy leather-bound spine and hardcovers with a black, blue, burgundy and cram pattern. The Journal contains illustrations and articles of a wide variety including fashion, fancy work and family reading. Inscriptions are on the spine and the front and back end pages. Inserted between pages is a loose Christmas Magazine from The Sun, dated 24th Dec 1954. Erin's Isle was a paddle steamer built in 1912 by Messrs. A. & J. Inglis Pointhouse, Glasgow, for the Belfast and County Down Railway Company. It provided a regular service between Belfast Lough and Bangor, County Down in the summer season. In November 1915 it was requisitioned by the Admiralty, initially for transport purposes, and later as an auxiliary mine sweeper. Surviving World War One, this vessel as lost on 7 February 1919 after hitting a stray mine at the entrance of the Thames Estuary and immediately sank. There were 23 lives lost, and 28 survivors. Bangor is a city in Gwynedd Unitary Authority, north west Wales, and one of the smallest cities in Britain. This postcard was sent home to Australia by a six bob a day tourist, and member of the Australian AIF on active service. The village of Westoutre (now Westouter) remained in Allied hands from the early months of the First World War to the Armistice, but in the summer of 1918, after the Battles of the Lys, it was within 2.4 Kms of the front line.
