Dr Doris Paton is an accomplished academic and respected Aboriginal Elder with a passion for the advancement of First Nations People through education, and the reclamation and revival of Aboriginal languages across Australia. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Social Science) from Monash University, Gippsland campus in 1993, and went on to complete a Graduate Diploma Education (Secondary); Master of Education Studies (Aboriginal Education); Master of Education (Aboriginal Education); and a PhD Philosophy (Education). Her skill and expertise have been acknowledged through roles as Director Vice-Chairperson of the Victorian Aboriginal Languages Corporation (VACL) and as Chairperson of the Victorian Indigenous Languages Implementation Reference Group, Victorian Curriculum Assessment Authority, where she developed the framework to accredit “Indigenous Languages of Victoria: Revival and Reclamation”, a VCE accredited subject contributing toward the preservation of Indigenous languages across Australia. A Federation University Council Member since 2020, Doris is also long-serving Director of the Nindi Ngujarn Ngarigo Monero Aboriginal Corporation; and has served on boards for Parks Victoria, the Victorian Aboriginal Heritage Council, and the East Gippsland School for Aboriginal Health Professionals. Eileen Harrison was born in 1948 at the Lake Tyers Aboriginal Mission, Gippsland, Victoria. She lived here until she was 13. The family moved to Ararat. Eileen left school returned to Lake Tyers when she fled form her parents’ house in Ararat, and stayed with Uncle Charlie and Aunt Phyl. Eileen found that Lake Tyers had changed for the worse since her childhood, and she only stayed three months because she found this unsettling. It wasn’t until 1993 that Eileen reconnected with the education system. To provide support for her daughter Jacey, Eileen took Higher School Certificate subjects at the Macmillan TAFE College in Warragul. In retrospect, completing the TAFE course was a pivotal moment in Eileen’s life: the “beginning of something”. Eileen later studied fine arts at the Koorie Unit of the Central Gippsland TAFE in Morwell. She received her Diploma in Cultural Studies and Art in 2003, and was the Central Gippsland TAFE student of the year. Aunty Eileen Harrison is a true living treasure of Gippsland. A regular exhibitor at Gippsland Art Gallery, Aunty Eileen has inspired thousands of people through her moving coming-of-age novel 'Black Swan: A Koorie Woman’s Life' (co-written with Carolyn Landon in 2011). Aunty Eileen stresses the importance of listening deeply from the heart. Abstract: ‘Dingo’ is today the name given to Australia’s wolf-like native dog Canis dingo, however it was originally the Dharuk word for a ‘domesticated dog’ - the Dharuk word for a wild dog was ‘warrigul’ (Dixon, Ramson, and Thomas 1992, pp. 65, 87). In its populist usage today this distinction has fallen away and dingo now refers to both wild and domesticated native dogs. Anthropological discussions about the role and significance of dingoes and dogs in northern Australian Aboriginal society have been extensive (Meehan, Jones and Vincent 1999; Smith and Litchfield 2009). Archaeological (McCoy 1882; Barker 1979), ecological (Nowak 2006) and taxonomic debates (Corbett 1995; Coman and Jones 2007) have existed for almost two centuries about the dingo’s origins (Jardine 1839; Gill 1951; Barker 1979; Savolainen et al 2004), and an intense sociological discussion has focused on what has been termed the ‘economic-utilitarian perspective’ that attributes to dingoes a decisive usefulness in Aboriginal people’s food quest (Kolig 1978). Contributors to this lively debate have been almost exclusively northern Australia-centric in their conversations, with the notable exception of Jones (1970), which is understandable given the rich vein of accessible Aboriginal informants in this region and observational data neither of which is possible or available in much of southern Australia. In this paper the authors shall build upon the northern Australian research of Meggitt (1965), Rose (1992), Meehan, Jones and Vincent (1999), and Parker (2006) and demonstrate that there exists a concomitant range of ethno-historical and archeological sources from south-eastern Australia which adds a considerable body of knowledge to our understanding of the utilitarian and symbolic significance of dingoes for Aboriginal communities. Furthermore, the authors shall examine the impact of British colonizers upon Aboriginal peoples’ associations with dingoes in Victoria. The word dingo shall be used throughout this paper to connote dogs as well as dingoes. Unpublished typed manuscript.
