The RAAF retained the Ballarat airfield as its Radio School until 1961. The then-Shire of Ballarat negotiated with the Department of Interior to become the civil operator of the airfield and sought the maintenance on site of the hangars and other structures, however a majority of the P Huts were sold by the Commonwealth. (Wikipedia) Sir William Hudson was a New Zealand-born engineer who headed construction of the Snowy Mountains Scheme for hydroelectricity and irrigation in Australia from 1949 to 1967, when he reluctantly retired at 71. The Lancaster bombers shown were a part of a squadron of elite Pathfinder Force. The small Pathfinder Force went ahead of the main bomber stream to mark targets with flares and incendiary bombs. Upon mechanisation in December 1941, 20th Light Horse (Victorian Mounted Rifles) was re-titled 20th Motor Regiment (Victorian Mounted Rifles). It was equipped with Bren Gun Carriers and deployed to airfield defence in Northern Territory. In 1943, the Regiment was deployed to Merauke, Dutch New Guinea, where it conducted patrols along the coast and up rivers using barges and canoes. Returning to Australia in April 1945, the Regiment was redesignated 20th Pioneer Battalion then disbanded several months later at the end of the war. A rare portrait of Henri Heremene. A french orphan, probably stunted by malnutrition, he was unofficially adopted by the Number 4 squadron, Australian flying corps when he wandered into their Christmas dinner at an airfield near cologne, Germany in 1918. Nickname "Digger," Henri came under the care of Private Timothy Tovell. With a tailored AIF uniform made for him, he was smuggled to Australia in1919, where he was adopted by the Tovell family. He remained traumatised by the war and died in 1928 from injuries received in a motorcycle accident in Melbourne. Photo shows the body of Ballarat 37, at the Ballarat Aero club following its sale in August 1955, painted in an airfield style hazard scheme. The tram entered service with the SEC in Ballarat as No. 22 in 1945. It was renumbered 37 in Sept 1952. The tram was sold after It was involved in an accident 15/4/1954 (See Wal Jack Notes item 5548). For a photo of the tram after the accident see item 7734 and for more details item 6313.
