Eltham Shire Council office built 1964 on the former site of Shillinglaw Cottage. In 1971 the offices were extended with a southern wing (to the left of the building) which housed the Eltham Library and planning offices. Taken shortly after widening of Main Road between Pitt Street and Elsa Court which was undertaken between February 1968 and August 1968. Image was most probably commissioned by Eltham Shire Council and taken by Hugh Fisher, photographer who operated from premises between Arthur and Dudely streets and was often contracted by the shire for official photographic work. The image was used in the August 1971 issue of Australian Municipal Journal This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book,"Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971). This book was written by Alexander Sutherland from the discovery of Australia, through to the exploration of Victoria and the first settlers to the pioneers. It then continues on to discuss immigration, the era of gold, the development of government, agriculture, music and art, literature and the metropolis of Melbourne. There were two volumes. It was published to co-incide with the centenary of Australia's first settlement.This book is a history of Victoria and Melbourne to 1888 and is useful resource for all local and social historians of Victoria and the metropolis of Melbourne.A very large book. This is the 2nd edition. In the Gippsland Times newspaper on June 1 1936 there is a report of a meeting of the Greater Gippsland League at which the production of this book was mentioned as"a method of marking the Gippsland Centenary. TOURIST BOOK-LET. The work of -Messrs A. Gilchrist and A. B. Cooper in connection with the preparation of a tourist booklet was warmly commended and a minute of appreciation placed on record." This group seems to have been a group of Gippsland citizens interested in the progress of Gippsland and any government action in the area. This meeting was held at Maffra. This tourist guide is a contemporary record of tourism promotion in Gippsland.A thin 48 pp booklet with a grey cover. The title, "GIPPSLAND FOR TOURISTS" is inside two blue, black bordered, bands. Luncheon reception held at Austin Hospital, Heidelberg to open appeal for the Stage 2 Building Appeal. L-R: Mr. Colin J. Bock, Shire secretary/Chief Administrative Officer, Cr. J.O. White J.P., Shire President, The Hon. R.J. Hamer, E.D., M.P., Premier of Victoria, and treasurer and Minister of the Arts. The July 1973 appeal's target was $500,000, which with government subsidies aimed to pay for a nine-story building alongside stage one - a combined ten-storey teaching, research and medical centre. The new block was planned to provide the Austin Hospital with 218 additional beds, eight extra operating theartres and a comprehensive range of medical, diagnostic, therapeutic and anciliary services. It is thought the signs were used for Ballarat's Gold Centenary in 1851.Seven window signs by Keith Rash painted onto wallpaper. The signs were designed to sit in shop windows to tell the history of the shop of company. .1) In 1862 Eurgene Bourdet conducted the "Imperial Dining Rooms" here. Board 20/- Board & Lodging 25/- week .2) On 16th Feb. 1853 at the Government Land Sale, Mr C.N. Thorne purchased this area. In 1893, R. Ludbrook used this property as Auction Rooms. .3) McArtney & aldred first occupied these premises in 1856. There were coachbuilders. .4) From the Single Storeyed wooden building once her J.P. Clarke operated as a carrier until 1865. Welsh & Surplice took over as Estate Agents until 1870. .5) Dr James Stewart built this property H.G. Harrison, 1957. J.C. Proctor 1862, John Stokes 1865, were chemists here. In 1856 The Savings Bank commenced here. W.H. Pooley, actuary .6) Wm Moss, tinsmith, occupied this site in 1865. Thos. Freeman,a uctioneer in 1882. .7) Doig & Cant. Gasfitters & Plumbers came here from Main Road in 1866. After 38 years A. In 1962 the City of Moorabbin celebrated one hundred years of self local-government. The celebrations commemorated those who helped form the City of Moorabbin and to recognise their achievements. In May 1862 the Moorabbin district, which included Sandringham, Mentone and Mordialloc was made a Road Board District, on 27 January 1871 it was made a shire and then on 29 November 1934 Moorabbin was proclaimed a City. On 15 December 1994, the City of Moorabbin was abolished, and was split three ways; Bentleigh was transferred into the newly created City of Glen Eira along with the City of Caulfield; Cheltenham was transferred to the newly created City of Bayside, along with the Cities of Brighton and Sandringham; while the bulk of the city merged with the Cities of Mordialloc, Chelsea and parts of Springvale, to become the newly created City of Kingston.A souvenir of the celebration of 100 years of self government by theearly settlers from Moorabbin Roads Board 1862 until City of Moorabbin 1934-62 A tri-fold pamphlet colour print on outside and black and white inside.
