Crib Pail owned by John Tom Clifton. His mother Frances Clifton re-married after his death to Thomas Harvey and it was held by the Harvey family It was loaned by Leonard Harvey to the organisers of the Great Australasia Mining Disaster Centenary Committee 1982 but then presented by his family to the museum in his memory.It is the only known article from the New Australasian No.2 Gold Mining Disaster. It was reported that three were removed from the mine at the time of the disaster. The Bellingham Billy rusted when left in a shed. Manley's was believed to have been lostThe round crib pail is made of tin and is badly rusted. A crib pail was used by miners to carry their food down the mines. The lid is missing. This pail was taken down the mine by John Tom Clifton and he wrote a message on it before he died in the New Australasian No.2 Gold Mining Disaster 1882. From a young age he held positions within the local church, was secretary of the East Kew Congregational Church at the age of 16, as well as superintendent of the Sunday School from the age of 15. Ron was supported during his life and ministry by his wife of 63 years, Dorothy. He was ordained at Northcote Congregational Church on 21 December 1942. His ministry was exercised in Northcote/Clifton Hill (1942–45), Yarrawonga and associated district (1945–50), Ballarat Dawson Street and "Zion" Sebastopol (1950–68), and Rockdale Congregational, Sydney, later Uniting (1968–83). Due to ill health, Ron retired on the 30th of April 1983. He was President of the Australian Council of Churches from 1971 to 1973, President of the Congregational Union of NSW from 1973 to 1975. As a member of the Joint Planning Committee he was involved in the development of the Uniting Church and inaugural Chairperson. Following union, he was a member and later Chairman of the Board of Social Responsibility. He was instrumental in founding the Mayflower Village for the Aged, the Rockdale Community Aid Service, and helped form the St George Community Conference.The Rev. Ernest Francis William Swan (1887 - 1981). Born Clifton Hill 1887. Educated at Wesley College and Queen's College at the University of Melbourne, where he was awarded an M.A. and B.D. Ordained into the Methodist Church in 1916.He served at Beechworth, Woomeland and Nhill before being appointed minister of the Piedmont Community Church in California in 1926. Whilst in the U.S. he graduated Th.D. at the Berkley Pacific School of Religion. In 1937 he returned to Australia as minister to Henley Beach S.A. Congregational Church. This quilt was purchased from an op shop in Clifton Hill, Vic. by Lois Densham, a quilter and former member of the Running Stitch group who has an interest in historic Australian quilts. The quilt has been displayed in NSW, where it was part of an exhibition of Historic Australian Quilts curated by Annette Gero and held at Old Government House, Paramatta between 5 June and 22 August 2000. Initially purchased in Clifton Hill, it originally came from a source in Highton, Geelong. It is a double bed sized quilt in the classic 'crazy' style with extensive use of herringbone and feather stitching.The pieced style of the quilt, made from squares of patchwork is similar to the style of quilts made by members of the Country Women's Association (CWA). The women sometimes made a quilt as a group activity and Lois suggested that the quilt may have been made by this group.Quilt, rectangular. Made with crazy patchwork in twelve large blocks. The blocks at each corner are fairly regular, whereas the others are full of random pieces. The patches are oversewn with hand embroidered feather stitch in different colours. In the centre there is a block with a maroon cross. Many of the pieces have central 'sprigs' of green embroidery in bullion stitch.
