Bacchus Marsh & District Historical Society
Plaque, Shire of Bacchus Marsh Coat of Arms
Coat of Arms used by the Shire of Bacchus Marsh in the 1980s and 1990s. A coat of arms has been in use in the Shire at least from the early 20th century. This earlier coat of arms described in 1910 featured two cows standing on two bales of lucerne hay, with lucerne fields and fruit trees and rolling hills all round a central valley with two rivers running through it. This early coat of arms was superseded by the slightly different design shown here. When this change took place is not known. When the Bacchus Marsh Shire amalgamated with other Shires to form Moorabool Shire in 1994 this design was superseded. The plaque showing the Bacchus Marsh Shire Coat of Arms is in near perfect condition and as such is an excellent example of the physical symbols used to demonstrate the presence of local government in the Bacchus Marsh region. The images on the coat of arms also depict key economic and agricultural activities in the region which provides historical information about the region in a visual and artistic way.Painted cast bronze plaque with inscription on outer white band in black capital lettering: SHIRE OF BACCHUS MARSH. Inner circle painted blue with shield and decorative branches bearing yellow leaves on either side. Shield quartered and surmounted by stylised sunrise. In four quarters, representations of significant local primary and secondary industries. SHIRE OF BACCHUS MARSH.coats of arms, shire of bacchus marsh -

Photograph, University of Ballarat Coat of Arms, 1999
The University of Ballarat was granted a Coat of Arms from the College of Arms in London. The grant has five parts: the Shield, the Crest, the Supporters, the Motto and the Badge. The origin of the University Arms is based on the history of the University and its antecedents. The earlier institutions include the School of Mines and Industries, the Ballarat Teachers' College and its successor, the State College of Victoria at Ballarat. Significance A Coat of Arms signifies the heraldic achievements of an individual or community. The University of Ballarat's Coat of Arms symbolises the golden past of the City of Ballarat and the former institutions, the School of Mines and Industries Ballarat Ltd and the Ballarat Teachers' College, which came together to form the University. At the same time, the motto 'dare to be different', presents a challenge to everyone in both the University and the region to strive for new ways of achieving.A Coat of Arms signifies the heraldic achievements of an individual or community. Plaque, A. H. Walker, COAT OF ARMS - Shire of Braybrook Victoria, Unknown date of manufacture
From around circa 1850 Braybrook was already well established and became a staging point for prospectors on their way to the diggings. Local government for this rural area to the west of Melbourne came when the BRAYBROOK ROAD DISTRICT was proclaimed on 28 May 1860. This authority was superseded on 23 January 1871 with the formation of the SHIRE OF BRAYBROOK. The Shire of Braybrook existed for about 80 years during which time it experienced significant industrial growth. The Shire of Braybrook ceased to exist in 1951 when the CITY OF SUNSHINE was formed. The Coat of Arms informs the observer that the Shire of Braybrook was initially a rural area with its images of a cow, sheep, and hay. The reference to industry however probably does not indicate adequately the large growth in industrial activity that occurred within the Shire. Circular board of Masonite painted by A. H. Walker which is a true depiction of the Coat of Arms for the Shire of Braybrook. It is mainly blue, yellow and red coloured with black writing, and has images of a cow, sheep, and hay, and also indicates a reference to industry.Shire of Braybrook Victoria / Dieu Et Mon Droit / By Industry / A. Clothing, Ecstasy, Pink Silk Beaded Dress & Coat, 1960s
The Fashion & Design collection of the Kew Historical Society includes examples of women’s, men’s, children’s and infants’ clothing from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries. Items in the collection were largely produced for, or purchased by women in Melbourne, and includes examples of outerwear, protective wear, nightwear, underwear and costume accessories. This dress is one of a number of items donated to the Fashion Collection by Dione McIntyre. It belonged to her mother Lilian Cohen. The McIntyre Collection of clothing and clothing accessories forms one of the largest single donations to our Fashion & Design collection. It includes clothing and clothing accessories worn by four women in the Cohen and McIntyre families across three generations. The items worn by Melbourne architect, and Kew resident, Dione McIntyre date from the 1960s and 1970s, and include evening wear, day wear, hats and shoes. As Dione McIntyre often accompanied her husband, fellow architect Peter McIntyre, to formal events, there are a number of pieces of evening wear among the items. The McIntyre Collection also includes items worn by women of an earlier generation: by Lilian Cohen, Dione McIntyre's mother, and by her mother-in-law, the wife of the architect Robert McIntyre. At the other end of the chronological spectrum are a number of outfits belonging to, worn and donated by Annie McIntyre. These include outfits created by notable late 20th century Australian and/or international fashion designers. The McIntyre Collection is significant historically and artistically as it includes examples of design that demonstrate changing tastes in fashion over an 80-year period. The collection is also significant in that it includes the work of a large number of Melbourne designers from the 1960s to the 1990s. Two-piece pink silk outfit comprised of a round necked, knee length dress and plain matching silk coat. The dress is scalloped at the waist and bordered with pink glass beads. Tool - Wood Moulding Plane, William Bishop, 1818
A moulding plane is a specialised plane used for making the complex shapes found in wooden mouldings that are used to decorate furniture or other wooden object. Traditionally, moulding planes were blocks of wear resistant hardwood, often beech or maple, which were worked to the shape of the intended moulding. The blade, or iron was likewise formed to the intended moulding profile and secured in the body of the plane with a wooden wedge. A traditional cabinetmakers shop might have many, perhaps hundreds, of moulding planes for the full range of work to be performed. Large crown mouldings required planes of six or more inches in width, which demanded great strength to push and often had additional peg handles on the sides, allowing the craftsman's apprentice or other worker to pull the plane ahead of the master who guided it. All we known about William Bishop is that he made planes in Grey Coat St Westminster, London, around 1818. He is listed in business directories of the time but nothing before or after this date. There are many of his decorative moulding planes of all sizes and designs for sale and given that his moulding planes are vintage his wood planes are well sought after by collectors today. A vintage tool made by a little known maker, this item was made for cabinet makers and individuals who worked in wood and needed a tool that could produce a ornamental finish to timber. These profiled planes came in various shapes and sizes to achieve the required decorative finish. This item is a significant tool from the late 18th to early 19th century that today is quite rare and sought after by collectors of vintage tools. It gives us a snapshot of how furniture and other decorative finishes were created on timber by the use of hand tools.
