Published: Nillumbik Now and Then /​ Marguerite Marshall 2008; photographs Alan King with Marguerite Marshall.; p143This collection of almost 130 photos about places and people within the Shire of Nillumbik, an urban and rural municipality in Melbourne's north, contributes to an understanding of the history of the Shire. Published in 2008 immediately prior to the Black Saturday bushfires of February 7, 2009, it documents sites that were impacted, and in some cases destroyed by the fires. It includes photographs taken especially for the publication, creating a unique time capsule representing the Shire in the early 21st century. Cuthbert House, erected in 1959 as a display house for the famous Ballarat begonias. It replaced the earlier Keel House. The conservatory was not open to the public, but the flowers could be viewed through the windows. It was replaced in 1995 with the current Robert Clark Conservatory. The former Lakeside Hospital can be seen in the background. Mrs Bon Strange and her husband Bert were well known Ballarat residents. Murray Comrie Collection. This is a reasonable copy of an older original. Copy probably made by Murray Comrie in the 1960s. The store close for business in 1916, and the building was demolished in 1926 after falling into disrepair. Originally built by James Ray in the early 1860s, London House was centrally located in Tarnagulla's commercial area and was a very successful enterprise for many decades. This rug was woven at the Geelong Wool Museum in an elephant print pattern developed in the 1920s. Part of a working exhibit, it was created on a Jacquard loom manufactured in Kidderminster, UK in 1910s, and assembled in Australia. From the pamphlet: This rug was designed by Brinton's Carpets, a company that produced carpets in Geelong until 2008. The design was produced exclusively for the National Wool Museum, and came from an earlier design housed in Brinton's UK Persian Rug Archive and was recoloured for the Australian market. This Rug was produced on a 1910-built Axminster Jacquard Carpet Loom, donated to the Museum by Brintons. It forms the centrepiece of the National Wool Museum, where visitors daily experience this extraordinary machine in operation. The Hardware Club was established in the 1980s in Hardware House, Hardware Lane Melbourne by Andrew Maine, Jules Taylor and Paul Jackson, who all worked together at 3RRR. Artists, fashion designers, and musicians all flocked to the Club in the 1980s. It was the place to experiment with fashion and dance to dawn at a time when may venues closed early. Hardware Houses rooms were perfectly suited for the purpose, its polished wooden floorboards ideal for a dance floor,mezzanine floor for spectators, and crucially the Club had two bars and a 24 hour licence. Initially the trio from 3RRR took over the club on Friday nights only , and then other nights followed. In 1983 graphic Designer Robert Pearce was commissioned to design this poster for The Hardware Club. Previously it was Dave Lyon’s original home and immediately to the right (carpark) was the location of his original motor garage – a tin shed with petrol bowsers out front. Copy of possible Rose Stereograph Co. postcard “View at Eltham, Vic.”, c.1924 looking southwest from Main Road near York Street to Bridge Street and the original 1875 bridge across what is now the Alistair Knox Park The land in the foreground was first bought from the Crown by J.M. Holloway in 1851. The land was sub-divided and called "Little Eltham". Bridge Street was created as part of the sub-division. Most of the sub-division was residential lots but the creek valley was divided into lots for small farms. Council started to buy the land for the Eltham Town park in the early 1960s. The area was used as a garbage tip and filled above the flood plain of the creek. Development of the land for a park began in the early 1970s. The house on the right was owned for many years by the Hill family until Council bought it in the early 1960s. The house was built in the 1850s or 60s. The house on the left stood on what is now the southwest corner of Susan and Bridge Streets. The Braithwaite family was associated with this house. The double line of fencing in the foreground was a continuation of York Street to the creek. The Bridge Street bridge was built in 1875 and replaced in 1958. The house on the right at the corner of Susan and Bridge streets was owned for many years by the Hill family until Council bought it in the early 1960s. The house was built in the 1850s or 60s. From Victorian Heritage: The single storey mansion house with enclosed glass verandah, Burswood was built in 1853 on a site overlooking the Portland Bay for English born pioneer colonist Edward Henty. John Barrow of Adelaide was the architect for this exceptional Australian regency style residence which he designed as a central block of fine axed basalt ashlar and slate roof (now replaced) with flanking brick wings forming an enclosed rear courtyard. Burswood is the most important early mansion house in western Victoria, being an exceptional Australian regency design by distinguished colonial architect James Barrow. Edward Henty, a member of one of Australia's most remarkable colonial families and the founder of Portland, established the first permanent settlement in Victoria on 19th November 1834, and Burswood is testimony to his success as an early colonist. Henty lived in his mansion for 17 years in a semi-regal state. Burswood has been little altered since completion in 1853. A glasshouse conservatory to the side of the present enclosed verandah was demolished prior to 1895 and the slate roof replaced with iron. Johnstone, O’Shannessy & Co was a leading photographic studio located in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It was active from 1865 to 1905. Administration of the Kiewa Scheme was moved from Tawonga to Mount Beauty in 1946. The first house in Mount Beauty, in Hollonds Street, was occupied by the co-op store manager from November 1946. The new Mess Hall at Mt Beauty was opened with much ceremony in early November 1946. The houses up to Nelse street were erected from 1946 onward and then the township was extended beyond Nelse Street in 1950.
