World War 2 has almost enveloped the globe and the Allies are having difficulty in containing the rapid expansion of Axis forces. It has been kept by a Legatee as a souvenir and found its way into the archives.Despite the reverses of the allied forces the cartoonist has maintained a positive outlook in his sketches about the outcome of the war. Contra entries represent the deposits or withdrawals of cash from bank or vice versa. Contra indicates transactions that affect both cash and bank.A large green cloth paper wavy patterned covered Norman Bros., Leger Book with burgundy tape on the spine. The end papers are blue marbled paper and the edges of the pages are marble coloured.This blank book was used by the United Berry Growers Association of Victoria as written on the front cover in copperplate writing. Inside the book on page A are three brief entries indicating which pages to see detailed accounts. Throughout the rest of the book various expenditures are listed, for example on pp. 71 and 72 is a list of General Expenses A/c. The Leger was used as a Statement of Accounts including Printing and Stationery and for other statements too. There are also two Cash Books, one with green wavy patterned covers and one with black paper hardcovers. Both have CASH BOOK stickers on the front with the name United Berry Growers Association of Victoria on one and the other has the initials U.B.G.A written in copperplate black ink. This particular book is one of two copies acquired together as part of the Laby Collection, the other being inscribed with Betty’s name, suggesting that this volume belonged to Jean Laby. At some point the ornament has been stuck in the book on the first page.This volume is a softcover book with green coated fabric cover and black lettering. The front cover is horizontally bordered top and bottom with a double black line. Minutes of the first meeting were taken Sat March 1th 1916 and the last minutes were held in the Library Mechanics Hall on 5th Oct. 1922. The book is filled with Minutes of the monthly meetings and has three paper insertions - a Mont De Lancey Wine List with three wines and their prices per bottle. A second quite damaged paper is: Wandin ? Progress Association Inaugurated 26th Oct 1912. The meeting was held Jan 11, 1913. It lists the monthly meetings and minutes taken up to March 28 1913. The third document is a copy of 13 typed pages from the Shire of Lillydale to Mr. S. Bradley, Hon. Secretary, Silvan Hall Committee, Silvan suggesting to the Committee that the attached plan for the maintenance and betterment for the hall be forwarded to the Public Health Department for approval. It includes a list of names of Guarantors and witnesses.A large red, blue and cream wavy lined paper patterned covered Norman Bros., Minute Book with burgundy tape on the spine. It belonged to Agnes Ardlie (1915-1993) who was aged 11 when she received the album. Her sisters were Olive (1905-1912) and Dorothy (1910-1993). They were the daughters of Arthur and Ethel Ardlie of Warrnambool, the granddaughters of the prominent Warrnmbool lawyer, William Ardlie and his wife Mary and the great granddaughters of John and Mary Ardlie, early settlers in Warrnambool. The Misses Ardlie lived in their early years at Aroona in Princess Street in Warrnambool. The autograph album has handwritten contributions (verse and signatures) from family members and friends and twelve signatures of cricketers from the Australian Test series of 1928-1929. These are mostly English cricketers and include the signatures of Wally Hammond, Jack Hobbs, Harold Larwood and George Duckworth.This autograph book is of considerable interest, firstly as a memento of Agnes Ardlie, a member of a prominent family in Warrnambool in the 20th century and secondly, as an item of some significance in the cricket world with its signatures of some English cricketers on tour in Australia in 1928/29.This is an autograph album with a dark red leather cover and gold writing on the front cover. Inside the cover are pages in a green mottled pattern. The other pages are mostly white or cream with some coloured pages. Some pages have handwritten verse and signatures in black and blue ink. The group performed at various IPS events including the annual ball, Christmas parties. Both Olga and her sister Nina, taught Greek dancing to many people over the years, both Greek and non Greek. Many young Australian born people of Ithacan descent develop a greater appreciation and awareness of the Greek and Ithacan culture through learning traditional dances.A coloured photograph of a dancing group dressed in a Greek costumes. Prior to this there was a Ladies' Committee formed in 1944 which organised social events. Sia Andrews, Maria Dellas and Helen Vlass were the first women to be elected to the executive committee in 1985. In 1991, in the Society's 75th year, Sia Andrews became the first female president. Street Melbourne melbourne Ithaca House, the home of the Ithacan ...Ithaca House, the home of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society, is located at 329 - 335 Elizabeth Street. The site was purchased in the mid 1950s to build the club rooms. The money for the venture was raised by the issue of non-redeemable 10 and 50 pound debentures to members. Nicholas Sofarnos, a young Ithacan architecture graduate, designed the building. Construction was completed in 1958. Up until 2020 Yamaha were long standing ground floor tenants. Prior to the building of Ithaca House, from 1917 up until 1958, the club rooms were located on the top floor of Michael's Building on the corner of Lonsdale and Elizabeth Streets. The Ithacan Philanthropic Society has been a focal point initially for expatriate Ithacans and as the years have passed it holds many happy memories for Australian born Ithacans through the generations.A coloured photograph of a three storey grey building in a city street with two cars being driven along the road. Street Melbourne melbourne In the 1980s the Ithacan Philanthropic ...In the 1980s the Ithacan Philanthropic Society held a reunion of Greek Australian women who attended the Emily McPherson College in Melbourne between mostly between the 1930s - 1950s . The college which opened in 1927 was renowned for its training in domestic arts. Here the girls honed their cooking and needlework skills. Up until the 1950s most young Ithacan girls were not encouraged to consider a profession or to pursue further study. Following a few years of secondary schooling many attended Emily McPherson College where they pursued domestic arts courses. -

Kalypso arrived in Australia in 1936 from Ithaca and in 1937 she married Dimitrios Sofianos, also from Ithaca.The Honorary Membership is awarded to long time active members of the Ithacan Philanthropic Society in recognition of their years of service they have given to the Society and the wider community. Street Melbourne melbourne In the early days of Ithacan ...In the early days of Ithacan Philanthropic Society most of the men, many of whom were single, worked around the CBD. The would gather at the club rooms at lunch times and after work to socialise, learn news from back home and sometimes enjoy a game of cards. The 'Club' was a home away from home for these men. Decades later, in the 1990s retired members often met at the clubrooms to play a social game of cards.
