The Sisters travelled around the inner and outer suburbs of Melbourne administering nursing care to patients in their homes. From its earliest years when Melbourne District Nursing Society (MDNS) began to wear uniforms the chosen colour was grey, though the style changed throughout the years as fashions changed from the late 1800s through to the 1970s. The Trained nurses firstly wore long grey frocks and a white cap with a long white tail hanging from the centre back. When bicycles were introduced the headgear changed to a white pith helmet adorned with a red Maltese cross in the centre front. This was held on with a veil going over the hat and tied under the chin. Over the years there were complaints that the veils became wet in the rain and they asked for a change of uniform, but this did not happen until 1921. The nurses complained their skirts became wet when riding their bicycles in the rain and asked, when raining, to be able to wear breeches and gaiters. This was granted provided they wore aprons when attending patients. It was not long before the uniform changed to a shorter length grey frock, red cardigan, grey coat and grey brimmed hat; later changed to a peaked grey hat. In 1966 MDNS were granted Royal patronage. Now as Royal District Nursing Service, RDNS, the uniform was redesigned and colour changed in 1971. By 1972 the Sisters were wearing the new winter uniform of a blue/grey skivvie under a V neck tunic style frock made of blue/grey herringbone winter material with the RDNS insignia on the upper left, and a beret of the same material. In summer the uniform became a royal blue V neck tunic style frock, with the RDNS insignia on the upper left, worn over a short sleeve white blouse. A royal blue peaked hat with the RDNS insignia in the centre front was worn at first and then only worn on official occasions. This uniform was worn until changed to a corporate style in the mid 1980s,A Melbourne District Nursing Service (MDNS) felt grey peaked hat, which has a deep crown and a flat top. Stitching comes from four corners of the crown at an angle to a grey band, which contains several rows of stitching, and surrounds the crown.. A stiff sloping grey brim, containing several rows of stitching, joins the band surrounding the crown, the rear of the brim is turned up and the front forms a peak. A cotton red Maltese cross is sewn to the centre front of the crown and band. A white with blue 'created by Effie Joy' label is attached to the inner hat band along with 'Size 22'. The crown is 9.5 cm deep and the brim is 5 cm deepmdns, melbourne district nursing service, mdns uniforms, rdns, royal district nursing service -

The photographs were commissioned by Bendigo Mines Limited during their exploration and mining program designed to revitalize the Bendigo Goldfield. The photographs were given to the Victorian Mines Department sometime in the 1950s. The photographs were taken at a relatively low level of about 4000 feet. This gives a very detailed picture of Bendigo as it was in the 1930s. The photos cover the City Centre and are mainly of the goldfields on the south side of the city; the extent of which covers approximately the four corners of Myers Flat, Maiden Gully, Mandurang and One Tree Hill. Streets, roads and places of interest have been identified as best as possible in December 2023. Turned sections on each corner post, four on the bottom ends, only caps on the top ends. ...This object is of primary significance. The nickel plated brass bedstead was made by Carl Alfred Ziebell for his wife Dorothea. Carl Alfred Ziebell ( 23.08.1867 - 26.10. 1940) was the third generation grandson of Christian Ziebell. Dorothea remained proud of her bed throughout her long life. (14.7.1873 - 14.12.1969) The bed linen and quilts remain traditionally dressed as they were in 1850. This ornate iron bed holds strong historical and cultural significance as a rare surviving example of craftsmanship by Carl Heinrich Alfred “Carl Alfred” Ziebell (1867–1940), grandson of Christian and Sophia Ziebell, early German-Wendish settlers of Westgarthtown. A skilled wheelwright by trade, Carl Alfred possessed deep technical knowledge of metalworking, timber precision, and traditional fabrication techniques required for constructing and repairing wagon wheels. These same skills are reflected in the bed’s carefully forged ironwork and its distinctive circular decorative motifs. Carl Alfred crafted this bed for his wife, Dorothea, who, as family accounts recall, “remained proud of her bed throughout her long life.” The linens displayed on the bed are traditional cotton fabrics with intricate lace detailing, donated to the museum by Sylvia Ziebell. These textiles closely resemble the types of linens that would originally have dressed the bed, helping to evoke its historic domestic context. The bed represents both the material resourcefulness and artisanal expertise present within the second generation of the Ziebell family. Its construction demonstrates a blending of practical skill with aesthetic ambition, illustrating how tradespeople adapted their craft to create durable and decorative domestic furnishings. As Carl Alfred and Dorothea are buried in the Lutheran Cemetery adjacent to Ziebell’s Farmhouse, the bed also strengthens the site’s tangible connection to the family’s multi-generational presence in Westgarthtown. The piece is significant for its rarity, its association with an identified maker within the Ziebell lineage, and its ability to illuminate the lived experience, creativity, and craftsmanship of the early community. It was at the corner of Koroit and Kepler Streets in Warrnambool and was the most splendid edifice ever erected in Warrnambool. Initially it was a Temperance Hotel but in 1891 it gained a colonial wine licence. Thomas Randall was the lessee and proprietor of the building from 1894 to 1907 and from 1895 on it was called the Ozone Hotel. Mrs Lillias Euphemia Thom was the proprietor from 1907 to 1910. The tablet described herein has her name incised on the tablet ‘L.E.Thom’. The hotel was closed in 1915 and re-opened in 1920 with the new name of Hotel Mansions. The proprietor at that time was Howard Lawson. In 1923 Hotel Mansions gained a full hotel licence but in 1929 the building was destroyed by fire. The present day Hotel Warrnambool now occupies the site of the Hotel Mansions. This tablet is of great significance as it is an important memento of the Grand Ozone Coffee Palace/Ozone Hotel/Hotel Mansions. This building was the most elegant building ever to be erected in Warrnambool and, as such, a reminder of the type of luxury accommodation offered to visitors to Warrnambool in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This was a time when Warrnambool was promoted as a spa resort with hot and cold sea baths and bracing sea breezes. The marble tablet is an indication of the splendor of the hotel’s furnishings and accoutrements. This is a rectangular marble slab with incised gold lettering (now somewhat faded). The bottom lettering is contained in a slight groove in the marble. There are four holes at each corner and six smaller holes along the edges of the tablet for attachment by screws to a building. The slab has some staining and a little rust. ‘Ozone Hotel’ ‘L.E.Thom’ grand ozone coffee palace (warrnambool), ozone hotel (warrnambool), hotel mansions, history of warrnambool, lillias thom -
