Set of photographs taken of the first women employed on SEC tramways in Geelong: as conductresses in 1942 (Also see items 1958 and 1960). They are standing in front of a Duncan & Fraser tramcar that, perversely, was modified for 'one man' operation about ten years previously. On the tram saloon window behind them, people are being encouraged to lend to the war effort through War Savings Certificates. ... . Photograph Geelong Tramway relaying tracks Melbourne Electric Supply ...Relaying tram tracks at the eastern end of Aphrasia St., Newtown, looking east. The location is immediately west of the Pleasant St. intersection, soon after Aphrasia St. was extended from Pleasant St. to Pakington St. so that the three sharp curves for trams into Retreat Road, Pleasant St. and then Aphrasia St. were reduced to one, from Pakington into Aphrasia St. May 1914. Note that sleepers are being used 8in the construction. All the original tracks were laid as a "stringer" construction, as seen in items 9271 and 9214, with tie bars and continuous concrete about 50cm wide under each rail. The southern track has subsided and the original concrete stringers dug out, with them lying beside the track. According to the local papers, wider stringers are to be used.
